BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) has sent four working teams Monday to help flood control in provinces and regions pounded by heavy rains that triggered floods and mud slides.The flood control authority held a meeting Monday night with the Ministry of Water Resources agreeing to dispatch one more working team to central Hunan Province to help consolidate river banks along the upper reaches of the Xiangjiang River and ensure the safety of reservoirs.Three other teams were separately sent Monday afternoon to Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the eastern province of Fujian.From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, torrential rains pelted Guangxi, provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan and Jiangxi. Some regions even saw rainstorms, according to the SFDH.At least 24 people are missing after flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains engulfed two vehicles in Fujian Province Monday, according to a local official.The authority asked the Guangxi team to help with floods control and mud slides prevention work there. It ordered the team sent to Fujian to help with rescue work.The team for Xinjiang will help investigate the collapse of a reservoir dam in Xinjiang on Monday morning after heavy rains on the previous night.The local government had evacuated more than 200 families living downstream the reservoir. No casualties are reported so far.

ZHAOYUAN, Shandong, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Fourteen miners were confirmed dead, 23 others still trapped underground while 292 were lift to the ground safely following a fire that engulfed a gold mine in east China's Shandong Province Friday, local authorities said early Saturday morning.A total of 329 miners were working underground when the fire broke out at about 5 p.m. at the Luoshan Gold Mine run by Lingnan Mining Co. Ltd. in Zhaoyuan city, a spokesman with the rescue headquarters told Xinhua.Three hundred and six were lifted to the ground as of 5 a.m., but 14 of them were found dead, he said.Twenty-three people were still trapped underground, with 21 miners' locations identified, he added.Dozens of injured miners had been sent to two local hospitals, he said.An initial investigation showed that the fire was likely caused by an underground cable. Police were further investigating the incident.The mine owner had been taken into police custody, he said.Over 100 rescuers are working at the scene. Provincial Party chief Jiang Yikang and governor Jiang Daming have rushed to the scene to oversee the rescue work.

URUMQI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 380 Chinese nationals had returned home aboard Chinese chartered flights as of Tuesday night from southern Kyrgyzstan where ethnic clashes have left some 170 people dead.The Chinese government has sent four chartered planes to bring home nationals including business people and students in Kyrgyzstan. Three chartered planes dispatched on Monday and Tuesday have returned and the fourth one left at 9:37 p.m. Tuesday an airport in Urumqi, capital of northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, for Osh of Kyrgyzstan to fly home more Chinese nationals.More than 600 Chinese nationals living around Osh have been sent to the city's airport with help from the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese embassy in Kyrgyzstan. XI'AN, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged local authorities to keep flood casualties and losses to minimum and to launch reconstruction work in a timely and orderly way.Hui was speaking during an inspection of flood-affected areas in Weinan and Shangluo cities in north China's Shaanxi Province from Aug. 2 to 3.He visited affected residents, as well as soldiers who were fighting the floods, saying the flood work had entered a crucial stage.Since mid July, many areas in Shaanxi Province have seen continuous rain, leading to frequent natural disasters, such as floods, mountain torrents and mud-rock flows.Continuous rainstorms caused mud-rock flows in Zhulinguan Village of Danfeng County, Shangluo city, on July 23 and 24. Hui visited the village and urged officials to address food, drinking water, clothing and housing issues.He also called for the repair of roads and resumption of water and electricity supplies as soon as possible.Homes, schools and hospitals should be reconstruction priorities, he said.Meteorologists forecast higher than average rainfall this month along the province's Hanjiang and Weihe rivers. SHANGHAI, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) - Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), China's largest commercial port and one of the country's major gateways for foreign trade, reported a 52 percent increase in profits during the first half of the year.Net profits for SIPG were 2.6 billion yuan (385 million U.S. dollars) from January to June, up 52.4 percent year on year, the company said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Saturday.Further, earnings per share rose 52 percent from a year earlier to 0.12 yuan, according to the statement.The company attributed the growth mainly to China's robust trade performance in the first half of the year.During the first half of 2010, China's exports rose 35.2 percent to 705.09 billion U.S. dollars while imports increased 52.7 percent to 649.79 billion U.S. dollars, according to the General Administration of Customs.SIPG shares on the Shanghai bourse closed down 0.48 percent to 4.17 yuan on Friday.
