SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the race for a coronavirus vaccine, scientists often say we need more than one winner.That’s in part because different vaccines use different strategies to provoke the immune system, and each strategy has different strengths.Take the inactivated virus vaccine, an approach currently used in the vaccine against the poliovirus. In this approach, scientists take a live virus, kill it with chemicals or heat, and then introduce that viral corpse into a person.There are three groups in the final phase of human trials using inactivated coronavirus, primarily in China, according to a tracker from the Milken Institute.“The immune system can tell the difference between something that's a real threat and something that's not a threat, and so if you get injected with a dead virus your immune system has the tendency to not pay a lot of attention to that,” said Dr. Shane Crotty of the La Jolla Institute for Immunology.The downside of the inactivated virus approach is that it only elicits two out of the three of the parts of the immune system, Dr. Crotty said. It’s capable of producing antibodies and helper T-cells, but not killer T-cells.The modern take on the inactivated virus approach is called a viral vector vaccine.In this strategy, scientists combine elements of the coronavirus with a common cold virus called an adenovirus that won’t make you sick. "And we have to have difficult conversations within our community."Thomas began the organization with three other AD's from Oakland, Minneapolis, and Richmond, Virginia.They say NOMAD will guide and mentor minority coaches, athletes, and administrators who want to further their careers.Thomas says seeing the racial unrest in the wake of George Floyd's death was a turning point."I saw myself under that knee. I saw my student-athletes under that knee. I saw my nephew under that knee. So it was really a call to action," says Thomas.Thomas' school plays in the Coastal Conference. He noticed that only two of its 18 schools have black athletic directors. Thomas saw similar numbers across the state and country but couldn't find any specific data because no one had been tracking it yet on the high school level."You have to lead by example," says Thomas. "That's what we decided to do as Nomad is to get out ahead of it, and no longer wait, no longer be complicit."In its first five months, NOMAD has grown to more than 200 members. They've already held a handful of virtual webinars teaching people how to advance their careers in athletics. Thomas wants to make sure everyone has representation and opportunity."The data tells a story," says Thomas. "There's not a lot of opportunities for underrepresented people to become athletic directors, and we would like to see that change in the best way possible. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In just days, Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine will go before a key group of scientific advisers to the Food and Drug Administration, and a San Diego doctor will be part of the process to cast an important vote.Dr. Mark Sawyer, an infectious disease specialist at Rady Children’s Hospital, will serve as a voting member of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee or VRBPAC when the body meets Dec. 10 to publicly vet Pfizer’s COVID-19 candidate.Dr. Sawyer is also a professor of clinical pediatrics at UC San Diego. He has served before on this outside advisory committee to the FDA, but the stakes have never been so high.“I mean this is a tough decision,” he said in an interview Friday. “We're weighing the benefit of a vaccine against the risks. And with any new product, we don't know the risks and we have to estimate based on the data we have.”Dr. Sawyer said he received Pfizer’s full Phase 3 data Friday morning, making him one of the first Americans outside the FDA to see the full details of the company’s large-scale clinical trial. The FDA is expected to release the data to the general public by Tuesday, two days before the public meeting.Sawyer will be one of about 20 outside vaccine experts from around the country on VRBPAC. The FDA hasn’t yet released a full roster of the doctors and scientists who will take part.
