A rural Oklahoma school system closed for two days earlier this week after a group of adults made threatening Facebook comments about a 12-year-old transgender girl, Achille Public Schools Superintendent Rick Beene said. The incident began after the student used the middle school girl's bathroom this year at Achille school system in southern Oklahoma, Beene said. In previous years at the district elementary school, she had used the staff bathroom. Two district parents complained about her use of the girl's bathroom in a private Facebook group called "Achille ISD Parents Group," which is not officially affiliated with the school, according to Beene. The threats escalated in severity and number when someone made the Facebook group public, Beene said, and some of the Facebook threats have been traced to other parts of Oklahoma and Texas.According to CNN affiliate KXII, Facebook commenters called the seventh grader, "it" and "thing." One Facebook poster suggested it was open hunting season for transgender people, and others advocated for the 12-year-old to be stabbed or beaten up."That's scary," Brandy Rose, the girl's mother, told KXII. "These are adults making threats to a child. I don't understand it."The Facebook page appears to have since been deleted. Still, Rose said the comments had scared her daughter."She's just an awesome kid. To see any kind of fear in her like that, because other people, especially adults, I can't explain how bad that hurts me," she said. 1498

A Phoenix father is accused of using frozen hot dogs to reduce swelling to the legs and backside of his 2-year-old son after he'd abused him.Phoenix police report that on Tuesday they arrested 23-year-old Joshua Junior Rodriguez for child abuse that he allegedly inflicted upon his 2-year-old son on Oct. 11.Police say that after an argument, the boy's mother was packing a bag to leave when she heard "whipping sounds" coming from the garage. When she looked in, she reportedly saw Rodriguez striking their son on the bottom with a strap from a duffel bag.She grabbed the boy away from him and went into the house. However, Rodriguez pushed her away and grabbed the boy again, taking him to the bedroom, removing his diaper and continuing to strike him on the butt.Police say Rodriguez then threw him on the bed and spanked him 23 times, before taking him into the showers where he struck him again when the boy tried to get out. After seeing the injuries he inflicted, Rodriguez allegedly placed a package of frozen hot dogs on his butt to reduce the swelling. He reportedly told the child’s mother, "You're going to get me for child abuse, huh?" He would not allow her to leave home until she agreed not to call the police.During his emotional initial Court appearance, Rodriguez claimed, "these are all false allegations."Police say the boy suffered "extensive bruising" and scratches. 1410

A scary moment happened for parents and young kids when a fight broke out at the Lied Memorial Boys and Girls Club near Lindell Road and Edna Avenue in Las Vegas. It's not clear yet how it all started but from the video, it appears that a number of adults were involved. But what concerns parents most is there were a lot of young children, even babies in the audience when the fight started. What seemed like a heated argument turns into a fistfight within seconds. People were throwing wild punches, shoving and tackling each other as others tried to break the fight.Scripps station KTNV in Las Vegas spoke with a parent who was at the Lied Memorial Boys and Girls Club. Concerned with his kid's safety, he did not want to be identified."It was scary you know just to know that all those kids around, and how fast the situation escalated... just one second everybody was having fun and the next second it was chaos," the parent said. "It was a 'think fast' moment because the kids were close. More than anything it was just getting the kids out of the way and then figuring out what was going on."KTNV reached out to Boys and Girls Club and the National Youth Sports League which oversees the game. The League responded saying it is still "gathering facts" saying, "If found that any of the individuals were involved in our league they will be immediately removed and we will press charges. This is in no way the kind of behavior that should ever happen at a child's game."Parents also told KTNV they're disappointed. They said as adults, people should be able to control our anger. 1610

A new poll found many parents have no plans to get their children the flu shot this year.According to a new report published by C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, 34 percent of U.S. parents say their children are unlikely getting the vaccine this flu season.Dr. Judith Shlay with Denver Public Health says it can be extremely dangerous to opt out of getting the shot. "They can be hospitalized and die from it as we saw last year, and we assume this year will be just as bad as last year," Dr. Shlay says.Of the 1,977 parents polled, the report found 48 percent of the participants said they usually follow the recommendations of their child’s healthcare provider when making decisions about the flu shot. But 21 percent say they don’t remember if their doctor recommended the vaccine. Many adults The NOW spoke with say they don’t remember flu shots being recommended by doctors when they were younger. Dr. Shlay says before the year 2000, they weren't."Before that time period, we were only asking high-risk adults, elderly and at-risk children to get vaccinated," Dr. Shlay explains.Parents says they have their own reasons as to why they don't get their kids flu shots. Some of those reasons include potential side effects, the belief the shot doesn’t work and that their child is healthy and doesn’t need to be vaccinated."You might still get the flu, but by taking the vaccine, you will reduce the disease burden from taking it. It will be a milder infection," Dr. Shlay says.Doctors also recommend not waiting to get the shot.  "Flu activity is high December and January, so the best time to get it is now," Dr. Shlay says. 1648
