SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego politicians are rallying for businesses affected by the county's move to the purple most restrictive tier.Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey said the purple tier is taking a toll, hurting businesses that can't withstand another months-long closure. He said it could make or break them and their employees, "many of their employees have been let go now their second or third time as of yesterday and it's really heartbreaking to hear their stories."Bailey said he voiced his concerns on Instagram after learning Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten filed an adjudication request that stated, "San Diego's increased cases are not due to the sectors impacted by moving into a more restrictive tier." The most recent information from the county shows work is the location with the highest transmission rate at 30%. Businesses like restaurants and gyms that are affected by the purple tier restrictions make up about 20% of exposures altogether."So if these businesses are not actually contributing to the spread of COVID based on information from the County Health Officer then why would we be shutting them down in the first place?" Bailey said.Coronavirus cases are higher than they've ever been, at 64,768 as of Sunday.“This is a stark reminder that COVID is real, is spreading and must be taken seriously. At this point, we are pleading with the public to take action to slow the spread: wear a mask, physically distance, and limit contact with those outside of your household,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, Co-Chair, County of San Diego COVID-19 Subcommittee. The purple tier closures went into effect Saturday. Over the last week, Saturday and Sunday saw the highest jumps in new cases we've seen."I think the desire of the entire region of course is to slow the spread," Bailey said, but he hopes to do that with a new system."We call upon the state of California to implement a better more nuanced policy that has protocols in place that allow businesses who are not contributing to the spread to remain open and place greater emphasis on the areas where we know gatherings are taking place that are contributing to the spread and subsequent hospitalizations."Bailey will be at a march and rally spearheaded by Supervisor Jim Desmond Monday afternoon voicing these concerns. They will march from Time Out Sports Tavern at 2:30 pm to the County Administration Building and hold a rally there. 2430

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students are furious about a new dress code rule for girls at one of San Diego’s most prestigious private high schools. Cathedral Catholic High School in Carmel Valley announced Friday girls would no longer be allowed to wear skirts. That led to a backlash among students, who signed a petition to reverse the change. “I think that the ban is very sexist,” said student Lana Owad. In a letter sent to parents and students, CCHS said the dress code exists to foster a faith-based environment where students are focused on learning and not outward appearances. CCHS has issued thousands of hours of detention related to the lengths of girls’ skirts. The school dress code posted online indicates girls were allowed to wear skirts or skorts that were not excessively tight or form fitting and were no shorter than 3 inches from the top of the kneecap while standing upright.“We’ve had them tailored in the past because of the restriction on it. We spent money on buying different skirts because they ban other styles for us to wear,” said student Riley Staal. Mimi Cleary said the change was prompted by adults, not students. “No one wants the skirts going, like, literally, no one wants the skirts gone. I think only the principal and teachers want the skirts gone,” said Cleary. Under the new dress code, girls can wear pants, Bermuda shorts, or capri pants. The school said girls aren't the only ones having dress code problems: the administration will also be holding boys more accountable about their facial hair next year. Students plan to rally against the skirt ban Tuesday. 1606

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Steve Askin tells the story of a tenant who rented from him for a decade. He charged rent below market - but still made out well."Over those ten years they paid me a quarter million dollars. They paid my mortgage, and then some," Askin said.Askin said he realizes he's way better off today because of his tenants. That's one reason he joined a group called The Property Owners for Fair and Affordable Housing. On Thursday, he and 15 other member landlords announced support of a bill that protects financially struggling tenants from eviction during the Coronavirus era."We as landlords aren't happy if someone can't pay the rent, but we have many more resources than our tenants," said Askin.Assembly Bill 1463, carried by Democrat David Chiu, would ban evictions of tenants who cannot pay rent through April 1, unless the Coronavirus state of emergency ends earlier. Tenants would then have a year to pay back the missed rent. Only then could a landlord take a tenant to court - and eviction would not be one of their legal remedies."It's trying to mandate something that we're already doing," said Kendra Bork, who heads the San Diego Rental Housing Association, which opposes the bill.Bork, CFO of Cambridge Management Group, said 90 percent of her tenants are paying rent on time - and the others are doing payment plans."We're trying to keep people in their apartments. We don't want a bunch of vacancies," Bork said. She said a better option would be rental assistance - which can also help keep the economy going. Bork also raised concerns about mortgage forbearance being deducted from a landlord's owed rent should it go to court.A spokeswoman for Assemblyman Chiu says the bill is being amended to make sure that won't happen. 1761
