San Diego (KGTV)- CSU San Marcos is hoping to help low-income students enrolled in the chemistry and biochemistry department. The department received a nearly million grant. A new program is expected to lead to a higher graduation rate.“Students from our department, they get placed in graduate programs across the nation,” says Professor Robert Iafe. “A large percentage actually joins the workforce.”Iafe says it’s their goal to continue students down this path.The National Science Foundation awarded the department nearly million for scholarships for low-income students.“Training somebody from the community to go out into the community only makes it stronger.”Incoming freshmen will participate in the department’s new program, referred to as the Targeted Learning Community.“We’re going to have a community made up of about 30 students that start freshman year in the same classes and progress all throughout as a cohort, through their entire career as a student,” says Iafe.The money will help the students pay for tuition, books, and more.“They often have to find full-time jobs to support themselves,” says Iafe. “They often have to do other things to be equal to, and on top of, the other students that don’t have this financial burden.”The Targeted Learning Community is only for the fall’s incoming freshman, but the staff is hopeful it will become permanent. The department tried the program back in 2013, and students had a much higher percentage of graduating in four years.The Chemistry and Bio-Chemistry Department will be hosting live Zoom sessions for parents and high school seniors interested in the scholarship and Target Learning Community. SAN FRANCISCO — Verizon is joining an escalating movement to siphon advertising away from Facebook in an effort to pressure the company into doing more to prevent racist and violent information from being shared on its social networking service.The decision announced Thursday by one of the world's biggest telecommunications companies is part of a boycott organized by civil rights and other advocacy groups under the rallying cry of "#StopHateforProfit."The NAACP and the ADL are among the organizations behind the movement.The protest was spurred by last month's killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.Facebook says it is in talks with the boycott organizers in an effort to become a "force for good."Verizon is by far the largest company to join the movement. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A mountain biker wants to warn people about visiting the Tecolote Canyon Nature Trail. He tells 10News he had a disturbing encounter there with a man carrying a knife. Mike Hayes was feet from a trail entrance in Tecolote Canyon off Mt Acadia Boulevard when he was approached by a strange man on Sunday. Hayes says he was walking his bike near the man - a transient in his 20s, dressed in camouflage - when the man suddenly came forward and asked if Hayes was stalking him.  When Hayes said no, the man got agitated and had a look with "Charles Manson eyes." "Next thing you know, he has a knife in his hand and an angry look," said Hayes. "And he says 'If you follow me, I'm going to cut you.'"Hayes says he backed away slowly, got on his bike and rode off, while the man walked his bike away.     875

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The man accused of raping and torturing a woman in his home in Rancho Penasquitos faced a judge today. 32-year-old Uber driver, Seyed Hassan Kaboli pleaded not guilty to 12 counts of sexual crimes. Kaboli peaked through his holding cell, as the judge announced his fate. San Diego Police said Kaboli bound, raped, and tortured a woman, multiple times at his home in Rancho Penasquitos on May 19th and 20th. Sky10 footage showed the victim being consoled by the police on Monday, and she said she ran naked to escape 24 hours of brutal misery. The next day, Kaboli was arrested just north of National City. 10News obtained a copy of the criminal complaint, explaining Kaboli’s 12 felony charges. They include:(5) Forcible oral copulation (2) Rape(1) Rape by a foreign object(1) Torture(1) Assault with great bodily injury(1) Sexual battery(1) False imprisonmentThe complaint also suggests that there may be another person involved in the crimes. Under count three, it reads Kaboli “inflicted aggravated mayhem and torture on the victim and another person.”Under count eleven, it reads “said person was unlawfully restrained by said defendant and an accomplice.”In the courtroom, neither the defense nor the district attorney would comment on a possible third party.Still, the judge issued a protective order for the victim— a woman, whose relationship was not disclosed. But Kaboli’s defense attorney said she was not his Uber customer. “There is no prior relationship,” Kaboli’s attorney, Ryan Tegnelia said. “He is not denying that they came into contact with each other on the date of the incident. But before that, they did not have any relationship.”Tegnelia said Kaboli’s family describes him as an introverted man who keeps to himself. They said they are shocked at his arrest. “This obviously came completely out of left field for them, caught everybody by surprise,” Tegnelia said. The judge set Kaboli’s bail amount at 0,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV, CNS) - San Diego police were searching today for men believed to have stolen cell phones and a set of keys from three San Diego State students near campus, a university official said.The robbery happened Friday shortly before 12:30 a.m. in the 5600 block of Mary Lane Drive and Dorothy Drive.Police reported three phones and a set of keys were taken from three SDSU students. One of the students was taken to a hospital for further medical treatment.
