CINCINNATI – Through dogged reporting that exposes important truths and holds the powerful accountable, winners of the Scripps Howard Awards demonstrate how journalism can change the world.Today, the Scripps Howard Foundation announced the winners of its 65th Annual Awards in 15 categories. The Foundation will present more than 0,000 in prize money to the winning organizations and journalists at a live show in Cincinnati on Thursday, April 19, in partnership with The E.W. Scripps Company, the Foundation’s corporate parent. The event will be streamed live on Facebook and YouTube.“The power of journalism is evident in the impact that these winning entries have had on their communities and society as a whole,” said Liz Carter, president and CEO of the Scripps Howard Foundation. “We are honored to present these awards to the winners, and salute the work of all organizations who participated in the competition.”The 2017 Scripps Howard Award Winners:Breaking News: San Francisco Chronicle for “Wine Country Fires” – Coverage of the worst wildfire disaster in state history in October 2017.Judges’ comments: “The newsroom delivered rapid enterprise on questions surrounding the lack of advance warning provided to the public and more. The Chronicle’s effort is a textbook example of how to provide critical information on a fast-moving story.”Finalists: Houston Chronicle – “Hurricane Harvey: Houston’s Reckoning”; The Press Democrat – “Northern California Wildfires”Broadcast, Local Coverage – Jack R. Howard Award: Brendan Keefe of WXIA 11Alive Atlanta for “The Drug Whisperer” – An investigation into the ordeal of innocent people wrongly arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana.Judges’ comments: “This kind of one-man-band reporting is often a budget-cutting technique, but Keefe shows us multimedia journalists can produce the highest quality investigative reporting. … It is also obvious that his brand of reporting is not quick-turn, short-form stunt reporting but a serious examination of an important issue that could impact anyone behind the wheel.”Finalists: WCPO – “Policing Their Own”; WFAA – “Criminal Caretakers”Broadcast, National, International Coverage – Jack R. Howard Award: Debora Patta, Sarah Carter and Meshack Dube of CBS News for “Ambush in Niger” – Coverage of the deaths of four U.S. soldiers in the west African country.Judges’ comments: “CBS deserves praise, encouragement and thanks for meeting the jaw-dropping logistical and safety challenges that come with reporting from an active war zone. This was one of several examples the judges saw of CBS’ outstanding conflict zone coverage. CBS also breaks with the tradition of male war coverage journalists with the outstanding work in this winning entry by Debora Patta.”Finalists: CNN – “Passports in the Shadows”; “Frontline PBS” – “Last Days of Solitary”Business/Financial Reporting – William Brewster Styles Award: Brian Grow, John Shiffman and the Reuters team for “The Body Trade” – An investigation into commerce of human remains.Judges’ comments: “The reporters exposed a system of selling human body parts for medical research that will surprise readers and, in some cases, horrify them. People who donate their bodies for the benefit of others, a final act of generosity, deserve better than the treatment the reporters exposed.”Finalists: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel – “Mexico Blackouts”; The Post and Courier – “Stickin’ With the Pig: A Tale of Loyalty and Loss”Community Journalism – in partnership with Google News Lab: Bristol Herald Courier for “Addicted at Birth” – An extensive look at how the opioid crisis has impacted babies.Judges’ comments: “The newspaper, with a circulation of 16,500, investigated the problem from all angles, outlined solutions and educated the community. The impact is wide-ranging for taxpayers, hospitals, families and schools. The Bristol Herald Courier not only reported what’s happening but foreshadowed what the community could face in the future.”Finalists: Capital News Service – “Home Sick”; The Frontier – “Shadow Land: How Rape Stays Hidden in Oklahoma”Environmental Reporting – Edward J. Meeman Award: Kale Williams of The Oregonian/OregonLive for “The Loneliest Polar Bear” – A view of the real life of Nora the polar bear, an internet sensation.  4324

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Brody Allen, the 2-year-old from Ohio who got an early Christmas this year because doctors said he wouldn't live until December, has died.Brody's father, Todd Allen, posted the news on Facebook Friday."This morning at 6 a.m. Brody passed quietly, and peacefully in the arms of his mother Shilo," he wrote. "He did not suffer. He was surrounded by his family and I have no doubt many angels. While our sadness is immeasurable and we will miss his smiling beautiful soul, we are also comforted in knowing that today our son has touched the face of God."Hundreds of people lined the streets of Colerain Township last month to put on a Christmas parade for Brody after doctors said he wouldn't live long enough to celebrate on the holiday.Neighbors decorated their homes, Brody rode a float in the parade and he got to celebrate at a party with Santa Claus and fireworks."He was so happy, Brody’s sister, McKenzie Allen, said that day. "It was amazing. Not just for him, but for everybody."Word of the early Christmas celebration for Brody spread far once it hit social media. Todd Allen previously said the family was receiving Christmas cards from all over the world."The letters are a blessing to us all. It's become a significant part of our day. And we couldn't enjoy it more," he said. After the big parade and party, the family privately celebrated Christmas Eve and Christmas.Colerain Township officials established a location for well-wishers to leave memorials at Drew Campbell Memorial Park, next to the administrative building at 4200 Springdale Road. All items left there will be given to the Allen family, police said."It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Brody Allen," police said in a news release. "Brody captured our attention and love over the past few months as he and his family bravely battled the disease that has ultimately taken his life."Services for Brody are being finalized and will occur at the end of next week, according to police. They said that donations can be made to the official Brody Allen Gofundme?page in lieu of flowers or gifts. 2124

CLEVLAND, Ohio — The FBI is investigating civil rights issues inside the Cuyahoga County jail according to a damning report detailing serious problems inside the jail. The details of the incident involving the use of force as a punishment, as well as the FBI's involvement were blacked-out in a version of the report released by Cuyahoga County on Wednesday. However, a complete version obtained by WEWS television station investigators confirm "this particular UOF incident was turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Cleveland...for further investigation."According to the report, prepared by the US Marshals at the request of county leaders, the Facility Review Team confirmed use of force is used as punishment inside the jail. The report also noted more than 100 interviews with inmates and detainees "reveal strong and consistent allegation of brutality, UOF punishment, and cruel treatment at the hands of the Security Response Team (SRT), whom the detainee/inmates refer to as "The Men in Black" based on their black para-military uniforms."Inspectors also noted that body cam video revealed "aggressive conduct and behavior as well as abusive, explicit language used by SRT members direct at detainees/inmates."US Marshal Pete Elliott confirmed that both the FBI and Cuyahoga County's Inspector General are conducting investigations into civil rights issues inside the jail.Since late June, at least six inmates have died at the jail. Inspectors noted the jail failed to conduct reviews of the deaths and cited "insufficient and unclear answers" regarding the deaths. The report also found there have been 55 suicide attempts at the jail in the last 12 months.Cuyahoga County leaders have pledged improvements at the facility and say some changes have already been put in place. 1818

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- A family wants the FBI to get involved after their son was stabbed to death in Mexico, according to KABC.Their son was in Mexico celebrating a friend’s birthday when he was killed, and now his family believes the Mexican government is trying to cover up the murder. Counterfeit items are being sold by third-party vendors on the top ecommerce sites, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office. The GAO released a study Tuesday showing that even top online merchants such as Amazon and Walmart are subject to having counterfeit items posted on their sites. In some cases, the counterfeits can be harmful, the GAO reported.  The GAO purchased 47 items — a mixture of shoes, travel mugs, cosmetics and phone chargers. The items were bought from third-party sellers on Walmart, eBay, Amazon, Sears Marketplace and Newegg. Of the 47 items, 20 were counterfeit, including all 13 of the Urban Decay cosmetics purchased. "From travel mugs to cosmetics, counterfeit goods harm the U.S. economy and can pose a threat to consumers," the GAO reported.  829
