SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Crime Stoppers released photos of a suspect and offered a reward Thursday for tips about an assault in the Midway area. A man parked his vehicle along the side of the Arby’s at 3777 Midway Drive April 6 about 7 p.m., inadvertently cutting off another driver. The man went inside the restaurant and got into an argument with the driver. During the fight, the driver punched the victim in the head eight times, police said. The victim fell to the ground and the driver stomped on his head with his feet, according to investigators. The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for an orbital fracture. The suspect drove away from the area, police said. He is described as white, about 30 years old, with a muscular build. The sides and back of his head are shaved, according to officers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans spend years saving up enough cash for a down payment on a home, but now the FBI says fraudsters are getting much better at stealing it.Hackers are getting into the emails of private real estate agents and escrow companies - duping would-be buyers into wiring their down payment cash to false accounts. They're also getting tipped off by celebratory Facebook photos about accepted offers, using clues like listing agent signs to get in touch with the buyers and pretend to be escrow companies - asking for payment. In all, the FBI says Americans lost nearly billion in real estate wire fraud in fiscal 2017, up 50 fold from fiscal 2016. San Diego special agent Chris Christopherson says the FBI can reverse wire transfers if contacted quickly after they happen. He said internationally they have a day or two, and domestic about a week. He said San Diegans can protect themselves by verifying payment information they get by email either in person or by phone with a trusted source. "Make sure you're not using a phone number you got from the email, be skeptical, verify it separately," he said. The FBI said another way to help protect yourself is to never to reply to emails that ask for financial information. Instead, forward them to the recipient you know, typing in their address. San Diego realtor Gary Kent was selling a duplex last year when hackers got the buyer to wire a ,000 down payment to a fraudulent account. They mimicked an email pretending to be from the escrow company."The buyer went down to the bank, said 'I need to wire the money,' and they said, this wasn't the same account number you did before," Kent said. Kent noted that the bank was able to reverse the transfer. 1804

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rainy days like these are not ideal for downtown bartenders like Brittany Devine. She works at the Knotty Barrel on Market Street, relying on tips to help make the rent. “It’s a lot slower than in the summer, when we have baseball games and conventions,” said Devine. She pays 0 to split an apartment in North Park. “I feel like I’m saving all of my money for the first and then all of my money gets swiped for rent." Devine among thousands of San Diegans competing for the region’s low supply of homes. The average rent in the county is now about ,900 a month, according to Marketpointe Realty Advisors. One of the big challenges is that people keep moving to San Diego for jobs, but there aren’t enough homes being built to accommodate them. The state reports that employers have added 26,000 payroll positions in the last year, but developers have only pulled permits for about 11,500 new housing units. “You can’t have population growth and one half of the units that are needed to house these people,” said Borre Winckel, who heads the San Diego County Building Industry Association. The BIA’s new report says San Diego County homes are nearly 60 percent more expensive than the national average. “Developers and builders can’t respond to the demand because the cost to construct the new units exceeds the pocketbook of the folks who need these houses the most,” Winckel said, adding labor costs and regulations are the two biggest challenges.Meanwhile, new laws continue to be developed - one, taking effect Jan. 1, streamlines more affordable developments near transit centers.
