SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As we continue to work through the pandemic, a couple of Carmel Valley kids are working to spread “some good news” for San Diegans. Brothers Zach and Asher Swazey are putting together their own newscasts. Its called “SGN San Diego.” The newscast is filled with good news.“You want to have something that will affect people in a positive way,” says 13-year-old Zach. The brothers are now working on episode two. They say it was a lot of work putting everything together.“It took us 2-3 weeks,” says ten-year-old Asher. “We went through multiple stages of editing. It took a little of time to make the script and film.”The boys say they were inspired to start SGN San Diego after watching actor and filmmaker John Krasinski on Youtube. The boys say their video is getting more views, but their headline is to make people feel good.“When you’re making a YouTube channel, it’s not about how many likes you get or how many subscribers, it’s how it affects people.”The brothers say their parents are also a big help. If you have any ideas for the boys to put in the newscast, you can send suggestions to somegoodnewssd@gmail.com. 1147

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Council leaders Wednesday approved a plan for an emergency moratorium on evictions during the coronavirus pandemic. The emergency law halts evictions within the City of San Diego until May 31, 2020, but tenants must show a substantial decrease in income or medical expenses caused by COVID-19 in order to qualify.RELATED: White House, Congress agree on trillion virus rescue billIf a tenant is not able to demonstrate they've been financially hit by COVID-19 within a specified time frame, a landlord can pursue an eviction. Any tenants who decide to move out during the emergency ordinance are also responsible for paying all rent due.“San Diegans shouldn’t have to worry about losing their home or storefront during this public health emergency, and now relief is here,” Mayor Kevin Faulconer said. “The temporary eviction moratorium is accompanied by millions of dollars to help small businesses stay afloat and keep San Diegans employed."RELATED: 5,700 San Diegans laid off... that we know aboutThe order will not stop a landlord from recovering rent at a future time or erase a tenant's requirement to pay rent.San Diego's emergency ordinance also assigns city staff to work with banks and lenders to stop mortgage payments or foreclosures for people or landlords who have suffered loss of wages or income due to the coronavirus crisis.RELATED: San Diego Superior Court dismisses all juror service through MayCouncil leaders also approved Mayor Faulconer's plan for a Small Business Relief Fund, which already grown to about million since it was introduced last week. The fund will help small businesses keep operating, retain employees, and address financial issues due to COVID-19, ranging from ,000 to ,000 in help. Eligible businesses must:Employ less than 100 Full-Time Equivalent employeesHave a City of San Diego Business Tax CertificateProvide documentation that shows the business has been operational for at least 6 monthsProvide proof of economic hardship due to COVID-19Not have engaged in any illegal activity per local, state or federal regulations“I want to thank my Council colleagues and the Mayor for standing with me and making sure no one loses their home in the middle of a public health emergency and growing economic crisis,” Council President Georgette Gómez said. “Most of our small businesses have been forced to close, and countless San Diegans are losing work and income as we try to slow the spread of the virus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As businesses continue to reopen, it's becoming the newest requirement for entry: your signature.Step into any of three Gila Rut salons in the county, and you'll see COVID-19 safety is being taken seriously. Clients' temperatures are taken. Their hands are sanitized. Their personal effects are placed in a bag. In another bag is everything needed for their appointment, from combs to scissors."So they can feel comfortable that when they sit down, everything has been sanitized for them," said Gila Rut President Keri Davis-Duffy.Inside the salon: masks, social distancing, and capes disposed of after each appointment. The owners are intent on protecting clients, staff and also, the business. A day head of an appointment, clients are emailed a waiver."They have to sign a waiver releasing Gila Rut of any liability should anybody contract COVID-19," said David-Duffy.Davis-Duffy is hardly alone. At the Point Loma Sports Club, set to open Friday, a liability waiver is also required before you can enter. Across the county and country, at salons, gyms, offices and even the New York Stock Exchange, waivers are quietly becoming the new normal. It's unclear how much they're really needed. Attorneys tell us it would be hard to prove a business caused an illness. and the waivers don't protect a business against 'gross neglience.'"If someone signs a waiver, that means they agree not to hold someone else responsible for any damages. What we're seeing here are businesses trying to avoid liability when a patron is exposed to covid-19 at their place of business. Waivers are not, however, ironclad. For a business to be protected, the business must show that such a waiver was signed and that it covers the potential claim. Even if a business shows that, a waiver is invalid if the business was grossly negligent or reckless. Also, a person could challenge a waiver by claiming it was signed under duress or that it was unconscionable," said attorney Evan Walker. For Davis-Duffy, the waiver is simply another precaution."We're in a vulnerable business ... We just want to make sure we're protecting are business and create some sense of sustainability," said David-Duffy.Davis-Duffy says all but a handful of clients have agreed to sign the waiver. 2279

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Campaign ads against San Diego District Attorney Summer Stephan over a backlog of rape kits to be tested were recently pulled from television.More than a hundred people stood on the steps of San Diego's Hall of Justice, showing support for Stephan, as she blasted her opponent's television campaign ads. The ads were paid for by the Justice and Public Safety PAC, funded by billionaire financier George Soros."We need your help to get the word out, San Diego is not for sale!" Stephan said, flanked by several crime victims who shared their personal stories.RELATED: Billionaire backs candidate for San Diego District AttorneyThe ad in question is about rape kits not being tested. Stephan announced in April that her office is spending million for an out-of-state laboratory to test 1,000 rape kits to end a backlog.Stephan's opponent, Genevieve Jones-Wright, stands by the ads, saying she hopes they'll be updated with larger numbers."My reaction ... hopefully, they make it more accurate; not hundreds of backlogged rape kits," Jones-Wright said. "There are thousands still sitting on our shelves, collecting dust as a result of her failed leadership."It's not clear why the ads were pulled. 1249
