Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says he’s concerned about the accuracy of COVID-19 test results.In a news conference Monday, he said there have been several cases where people received positive results, even though they had never been tested in the first place.“For that to come back positive, when there was no specimen submitted, is problematic. So I’ve heard it enough to be concerned about it," said DeSantis.People have said they submitted their contact information at a COVID-19 testing site, but after seeing how long the line was, they decided not to wait an hour or more to get the test. Nevertheless, a few days later, they got an email or a phone call telling them that they tested positive.Representatives at the Centurylink Sports Complex testing site say false positives aren’t possible there, because of how they have it set up.The Florida Department of Health says, at Centurylink, you submit your contact information right before you get tested. So if somebody were to get out of line, they wouldn’t have had the chance to hand over their phone number or email.But not all testing sites are the same.We reached out to Lee Health, which operates several testing sites of its own. Those sites operate by appointment only, and they do take contact info beforehand, but Lee Health says it has not yet had any issues with mixed up results, and it takes several steps to make sure the results get to the right person.The health system says its sites verify the patient’s identity when they arrive. Then, the person who conducts the test signs and dates each specimen. FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – A school bus driver in Massachusetts says he was inspired by the students he drove to earn his college degree and pursue his dream of becoming a teacher.After high school, Clayton Ward attended college in Virginia, but the demands of school and work took their toll on him and he left after a few semesters.Eventually, he started driving a school bus for the City of Framingham and talking to the students on his route every day renewed his sense of passion for expanding and teaching young minds.So, he enrolled at MassBay Community College in 2019 with the goal of earning his degree, transferring to a four-year institution, and someday teaching high school history.MassBay says Ward worked full-time driving the bus, while also attending classes full-time at the community college. He excelled and earned a spot on the dean’s list every semester. He also did all of this during the COVID-19 pandemic.“It wasn’t always easy," said Ward. "I would drive my route in the morning and afternoon, take a class in between shifts, and take night classes and classes online to complete my degree requirements. I would think of those students and all the years I wanted to make this happen, and it helped me focus my energy.”In just one year, Ward completed his associate in arts degree in liberal arts and he plans to transfer to Framingham State University in the fall to pursue his bachelor’s degree in history, with a minor in secondary education.“I really enjoy working with kids, especially the high school students, and during the bus routes, we would chat about their classes,” said Ward. “As a history buff, I would share lessons that I learned in school and we talked a lot about academics. After several of these discussions, some of the students would tell me they wanted me to be their teacher. I think they only said that because I was a different person than their regular teachers, educating them in a different way to pique their interest. But, however small that mention was from those kids… it stuck with me and gave me the motivation to complete a goal I had started years ago.” 2119

  

For months now, public health experts and educators have been lamenting the long-term impacts of remote learning.In May, researchers estimated that by the beginning of this academic year, the average student would lose a third of their reading progress and half of their math progress from the previous year.“That was kind of assuming kind of a worst-case scenario,” said Beth Tarasawa, executive vice president of Research at NWEA, a nonprofit standardized testing company that released its findings from this fall’s assessment.“Kids remarkably have weathered pretty well in reading and those patterns both in the cross-sectional as well as the longitudinal studies really kind of highlight some good news,” said Tarasawa.But their analysis of data from nearly 4.4 million U.S. students in grades 3-8 found average scores for math were lower – between 5 and 10 percentile points– for students this year as compared to same-grade students last year.The findings represent some of the first empirical measures of how the pandemic has affected student performance.“We're moving slower, which means that we're covering less material over a certain period of time,” said fifth grade teacher Cara Koen.Koen, who has been teaching reading and math for more than two decades, says remote learning has forced her to slow her pace, especially with math.“There may be difficulties with Wi-Fi and different things from day to day” said Koen. “You have to slow down in order to reach all learners.”Kimberly Berens is a child development expert, educator and the author of "Blind Spots: Why Students Fail and The Science That Can Save Them."“Spending more time on repeated reinforced practice of skills to mastery so that when kids have gaps in instruction that are inevitably going to happen from school closures, kids getting sick or pandemics then kids will be more resilient,” said Berens.Still, NWEA’s data set is incomplete. One in four students who they tested in 2019 were missing from this year’s assessment.“They were much more likely to be African-American or LatinX or Hispanic,” said Tarasawa. "They were more likely to be from high poverty schools and they were more likely to be lower achieving in the first place.”That means that while the new data suggests some promising outcomes, we still don’t know just how severely the pandemic is impacting minority and socio-economically disadvantaged students. 2413
