Tyler Stallings was 4 years old when he first learned that some veterans are homeless.Veterans are part of the Maryland boy's extended family and he always thought of them as heroes. Homeless veterans didn't make sense to him.He wanted to do something to help them right away, so he asked his mom if he could build houses for them. At such a young age, he wasn't in the best position to start building houses. He still wanted to help, so Tyler started doing something a little more realistic. He began making what he calls "hero bags.""Doing something special for veterans began after I started asking my mom why some veterans are homeless," Tyler said on his 671

US authorities are no longer holding migrants under a border bridge here. But advocates say some children and families who US Customs and Border Protection detained for days in the fenced-in space were shaken once they were released from custody.Bruises were visible on toddlers and older children who had to lay on rocks and concrete, said Taylor Levy, legal coordinator at Annunciation House. The El Paso-based shelter is a frequent stopping point for migrants who've been released from government custody. Migrants who'd been held under the bridge told staff there they'd been held from three to five days and "treated worse than dogs," Levy said.Photos and videos from the scene appeared to show migrant families sitting and at times sleeping on the gravel, with only thin space blankets between them and the ground."It was horrible there, because we slept under the bridge on top of the gravel," said Bartolo Tadeo Gómez, 25, who spent four nights under the bridge with his 7-year-old son. "There was a lot of dust."They struggled to stay warm without blankets, he said. And the whole time, Tadeo said, he worried about his son, who seemed sick and wasn't eating."I was afraid he would die," Tadeo told CNN.Last week, US authorities said a rapid influx of migrants crossing the border forced them to use the space under the Paso del Norte border bridge as an emergency measure in the face of a humanitarian crisis. They described a tent set up under the bridge as a "transitional shelter" for migrants who had yet to be processed.CBP officials say caring for those in custody with dignity and respect is a paramount concern.Advocates accuse CBP officials of worsening the humanitarian crisis at the border, rather than helping it.Over the weekend, the 1767

Warmer weather means tick season across the U.S., and a number of tick-borne disease cases has increased over the past few years.“Lyme disease is gonna be the most common disease we see,” said Nicole Chinnici, laboratory director of the Dr. Jane Huffman Wildlife Genetics Institute. Chinnici is part of the Pennsylvania Tick Research Lab.“Tick season generally starts in the spring. It’s as we're coming out of winter and getting into the warmer months,” explained Dr. Mark Montano, the medical director of CareNow Urgent Cares in Colorado. The CDC said disease cases from mosquito, tick, and flea bites more than tripled from 2004 to 2016 in the U.S.. They predict the number of infections in any given season is complicated, but to put it in perspective, the number of tick-borne disease cases increased from 48,610 reported cases in 2016 to 59,349 reported cases in 2017. “There’s a lot of factors in it,” Chinnici said. She said reasons could include how mild the winter was, how long the warmer months are, and even animal hunting and population control. Another factor is how much time people spend outside.“People are free right now. They're working from home, so they are spending more time outdoors, so that's putting them at a greater risk just because of everything else going on with COVID-19,” Chinnici said. The tick research lab is one of only a few in the U.S. “We receive ticks from people, physicians, and then we test them in the lab using molecular techniques, and then we report the results back to the customer within 72 hours,” she explained. All you have to do is send it in. For Pennsylvania residents, it’s free. For cases in other parts of the U.S., there is a fee that comes with the lab test.“We’re providing the individual that was exposed to the tick bite with early detection of whether or not they've been exposed to a tick-borne disease,” Chinnici said.A quick look at their 1918
