NEPHI, Utah – We all know teachers have incredibly tough jobs where they are asked to wear many hats. This year, amid the COVID pandemic, it will be a school year unlike any other.Schools in metropolitan areas are often the focus of media coverage, but teachers in rural parts of our country are facing the same problems.In the Juab School District in Nephi, Utah, the teachers are heading back to school. Classrooms are getting those finishing touches. Cleaning stations sit ready and desks are waiting to be filled.“It’s going to look a lot different than we’ve experienced in the past,” said Natalie Darrington, a math teacher in the Juab School District.Darrington is used to working with numbers. Smaller class sizes, plus fewer teachers, equals all sorts of fun interactions.“I know all the kids and I love seeing them in the grocery store” Darrington said. “I can’t go to the grocery store in my pajamas.”This year, the equation is not the same. Add in COVID-19, a pretty mean multiplier.“I don’t know how many students are going to show up,” Darrington said. “I don’t know how many students are going to elect to go online on any given day.”Like many districts across the country, students can choose how they learn this year.“The biggest struggle we face right now with COVID is getting support for the technology we need to be using,” said Juab School District Superintendent Kodey Huges.Even in a district with less than 3,000 students, Hughes said the hurdles are high.“The teachers can only do the great job they can do if they have the resources and the support to get out of the way so they can do it,” Hughes said.Enter small town ingenuity and hard work.This year, veteran teachers, like Mrs. Darrington, are becoming coaches to newer hires.“A lot of teachers leave the profession of teaching not because of money, but because we have to wear a lot of hats,” Darrington said.The hope is that together they can make it through this science experiment of a school year.“We’re just rolling with the punches here,” Darrington said with a laugh.The halls of Juab Junior High School will be a place where positive thinking is just as important as critical thinking.“My mantra this year is attitude,” Hughes said with a smile.As it is with any lifelong educator, there is always a lesson to be learned.“I know it’s stressful and overwhelming, but I feel like if we waste this opportunity to learn and to grow then it’s been all for not,” Darrington said. 2472

NEW YORK CITY — In what New York City's mayor is calling a "Christmas miracle," an NYPD officer is conscious and communicating after he was shot in the back in Brooklyn while responding to a 911 call for a domestic dispute, police said.The incident occurred in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn on Thursday night.Police said the alleged shooter has been arrested and the gun was recovered. A bulletproof vest protected the 27-year-old officer, who was rushed to a local hospital after being shot near Prospect Place and Ralph Avenue. It went into the vest, but didn't penetrate the officer's skin, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said.The shooter allegedly threatened his girlfriend, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said.The girlfriend's mother repeatedly called 911, begging for police to come, Shea said. She said the boyfriend had threatened to shoot the home up. As officers on the scene interviewed the daughter, her boyfriend arrived.He shot an officer and then ran, Shea said. Other officers pursued and arrested him a few blocks away. Body camera video shows officers repeatedly tell the shooter to drop his gun. He put it down on the sidewalk and was taken into custody."Because the NYPD was there, that woman is alive right now," de Blasio said. "Because our officer put himself in harm's way, an innocent woman is alive."The officer’s precise condition wasn’t immediately clear, but police officials said the officer was awake and responsive and has since been released from the hospital.De Blasio and Shea spoke to the officer's parents."They felt that this was a Christmas miracle that their son was alive and well," de Blasio said.The NYPD asked people to avoid the area. NEW YORK (AP) — The nation’s largest movie theater chain, will reopen in the U.S. on Aug. 20 with retro ticket prices of 15 cents per movie. AMC Entertainment said Thursday that it expects to open the doors to more than 100 cinemas — or about a sixth of its nationwide locations — on Aug. 20 with throwback pricing for a day. AMC theaters have reopened in numerous international countries but have remained shuttered in the U.S. since March. The chain touted the reopening as “Movies in 2020 at 1920 Prices.” Regal Cinemas, the second largest chain, is to reopen some U.S. locations on Aug. 21. 602

Newly released police body cam shows Waffle House shooting suspect Travis Reinking in East Tennessee two months before the Antioch attack.It's video from a motel in Alcoa, where Reinking was staying in February while working on a construction project. Full Coverage: Antioch Waffle House ShootingOne clip showed one of his several run-ins with the law. One of those run-ins happened just two months ago.Reinking told the officer someone kept knocking on his window and yelling. However, it was a woman who called police on him for allegedly threatening her in a violent manner. "They'll be talking loud at night, knock on the windows and walk off, and I don't know who it is,” Reinking said in the clip. Samantha Veals said she was trying to put her kids to sleep when she heard Reinking yelling.She told him to be quiet, at which point he allegedly charged inside her motel room, balled up his fist and laughed at her when she screamed.  Reinking admitted to police that he yelled at Veals but denied charging at her. He checked out of the motel that night and Veals opted to not press charges. Reinking?was arrested Monday and charged with four counts of criminal homicide, four counts of attempted murder and one count of unlawful gun possession in the commission of a violent felony.  The Waffle House reopened Wednesday and for the next month, is donating 100 percent of its proceeds to the victims of the attack.  More:  1514
