SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for additional victims after arresting a man they say tried to drag a 17-year-old girl to his car in North Park in late May. According to police, the attempted kidnapping happened around 7:15 a.m. on the corner of 30th Street and El Cajon Boulevard May 31. Police say Thomas Luis Salas, 38, approached the 17-year-old at a bus stop before making casual conversation. He then extended his hand for a handshake and, when the juvenile shook his hand, police say Salas tried to grab her arm and pull her toward his light blue 2011 Ford Escape. The 17-year-old fought back and was able to get away. Investigators were able to track down and identify Salas as the suspect in the case. He was arrested on attempted kidnapping charges. His bail is set at 0,000. Police are asking additional victims to come forward. Salas is a Hispanic man five feet, nine inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. He was unshaven with a goatee. Police say Salas’ eyes have a “sleepy” appearance. He also has a large tattoo on his right arm of a cartoon face inside a “sunburst” or “Flame” design. According to police, Salas may have approached other juvenile women with his phone out attempting to engage in conversation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents rallied at Poway Unified District Headquarters during their monthly board meeting, asking them to pause on proposed plans to bring a Costco to land zoned to build a school.The vacant lot is at the corner of Camino Del Sur and Carmel Valley Road and was labeled a surplus by the Poway Unified School District.That means they don't need it and believe they have enough schools in the area.Parent Gianni Nguyen said that's not true, "in our particular area the schools are impacted, so no."Nguyen said she doesn't mind the idea of creating mixed use retail, restaurants and a Costco, but she was angered by the process the board went through to get the deal."I felt like we were just robbed... We just want to be part of that process, bring us to the table, give us a voice, let us share with you what our opinions are," she said.The board voted unanimously at their September meeting to pursue a long term lease with Costco, that spans decades. At the time doctors gave him a two percent chance of survival.Stacy's brave comrades helped pull him from the rubble and to safety. One of them, Staff Sergeant Justin Peck, was honored by President Trump during his State of the Union address.Stacy is paralyzed from the neck down and blind in his left eye. He suffered extensive damage to his lungs, vocal chords trachea. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- On Tuesday, county leaders, along with first responders and behavioral health experts, launched a new program named after a CAL Fire captain who died by suicide in 2017.The Fire Captain Ryan J. Mitchell First Responders Behavioral Health Support Program provides a confidential 24-7 helpline for any local first responder. The helpline is staffed by former and current first responders. The program also connects first responders to local behavioral health resources and substance abuse services.CAL Fire Captain Ryan Mitchell died by suicide on November 7, 2017, at the Interstate 8 Pine Valley bridge.“He loved the acts of fighting fires,” said his widow Denelle Mitchell, in an interview with ABC 10News in October 2019.She also spoke about the difficult days. “What comes with that is a lot of hard work, a lot of hours away from your home and your family and your friends,” she said.Ryan’s father, William Mitchell, became a fire chaplain after his son’s death. While he’s heartbroken his son is no longer with them, he is proud of the legacy he is leaving behind.“Heartbreak and pride are strange bedfellows,” William Mitchell said. “It's hard to process that sometimes. We were always and will continue to be very proud of our son.”Supervisor Nathan Fletcher introduced the policy to create and fund the program in September 2019. The Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance said 82 firefighters, 24 EMS personnel, and one dispatcher have died by suicide so far this year.
