In 2015, Matthew Muncy, a father of four girls, was looking for work.“You go into the store and the kids, they’re wanting things, and you can’t give it to them,” he said. "Even so much as a candy bar could mean the difference between feeding them dinner or not."But the right job can be hard to find in Jackson County, Kentucky. I love it here,” said Keith Gabbard, CEO of Peoples Rural Telephone Cooperative.In this a population of fewer than 1,000 people, community means everything. It’s why Gabbard worked to bring hope to his neighbors, like Muncy.Gabbard brought fiber optic internet to the small city.“When you say fiber, people say, ‘cereal? What are you talking about?’” Gabbard recalled of what people thought when the idea first hit the area.Fiber optic internet is some of the fastest internet you can find.“Fine glass the size of a human hair that you send a light through,” he explained.In 2014, Gabbard's rural part of the Bluegrass State went from barely having any internet connection to now having some of the fastest internet in the country.“Think of the speed of light and how fast that is, that’s how I like to compare it,” Gabbard said. “Our Internet here is as good as New York City.”More than half of Americans say internet access has been essential during the novel coronavirus pandemic. However, according to 2016 figures, 39 percent of rural Americans lack access to broadband internet.The cost of bringing broadband to the Jackson County area wasn’t cheap. Gabbard says grants and loans covered most of the broadband network’s -million cost.But one of the biggest payoffs of the light-speed connection is opportunity.“We’re talking about people who have been working at a gas station before on minimum wage that are doing tech support for Apple from their home,” Gabbard said.Gabbard says the network has helped bring hundreds of jobs to the area.Muncy now works doing customer support for a major tech company.“If it wasn’t for the internet, I couldn’t do my job period,” he said.For him, the connection is to more than just the internet; it’s to a new life. 2320

(KGTV) - An altercation over a mask turned ugly at an Imperial Beach taco shop on Thursday night.Just before 10 p.m. at Don Pancho's Taco Shop, surveillance video shows a customer at the walk-up order window. He's using his shirt and sleeve to cover his face."Our cashier says he has to wear a proper face mask. The customer gets upset. The cashier offers a face mask that we have on hand for those who don't have masks. He thinks about it and gets upset," said manager Myra Espinoza.In the video, the man waves his hand, apparently waving off the mask offer, before he begins walking away. Moments later, there is a loud sound."He heard something hit the window, and the window falling and shattering down," said Espinoza.The video revealed the cause: the man took his skateboard and thrust into one of the restaurant's windows."It hurts. That's like my house. It's so disrespectful. I wouldn't go to his house and break his window," said Espinoza.Espinoza says it's not the first time someone has gotten upset over the mask policy."We have sliding windows. One gentleman grabbed the sliding windows so hard, it bounced back," said Espinoza.Still, those types of incidents are rare. Thursday's vandalism is the first time things have turned destructive."It's uncalled for and unnecessary. HUDSON, Florida — People living in a Florida nudist community say they're tired of not getting their mail from the postal service. The nudists at the Eden RV Resort in Hudson say one carrier refuses to deliver mail inside of their community because it makes her uncomfortable. Residents are outraged and are concerned they're missing important pieces of mail."There's a postal creed and it doesn't say anything about them not coming to nudist resorts. I pay for a service, I expect that service," resident Leonard Rusin said. They say this has been going on for months and have even reached out to the carrier's supervisor. The post office says that carrier is doing nothing wrong and is entitled to her right not to deliver mail if she's uncomfortable. 796
