SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new streaming documentary follows young San Diegans on a life-changing trip to the Philippines."Filgrimage" focuses on eight Filipino-Americans during a 2019 summer trip to the Philippines with The Filipino School."If we don't have programs like this, then we as Filipino-Americans are only going to know what we have time to know, or what we're exposed to," says Tony Olaes, the founder of The Filipino School and organizer of the trip.He says a similar trip to the Philippines 14 years ago inspired him to learn more about his culture. That's what he hopes this trip does for the people who take it."I went from not wanting to be Filipino to 'Mr. Filipino,'" he says. "It's because I understood something amazingly beautiful about who I was. So that's how this all started."Olaes took 23 people on the trip in 2019. A documentary crew followed them as they visited several parts of the archipelago."This is something that you can't really get unless you actually experience it for yourself," says Jocelynne Monteheromoso, one of the teens profiled in the documentary. "The fact that we were going through it and it was recorded on camera is just something so beautiful that I feel that our generation especially needs to know about.""I hope this encourages anyone who is embarrassed of their culture, or straight away or doesn't even know about their culture, to try and put some work to figure out more about it," says Ryah Hernandez, who says she discovered a beauty in the region that she didn't know about from family trips as a child.San Diego has the second-largest Filipino population of any county in the US. Olaes says he hopes this documentary will give people who don't have the time or means to take a trip like this a glimpse into their ancestral homeland. He calls it a typical American story."The minute we start to reach into an inquire into where we all came from and the beauty of where we came from, it's that beauty that we get to bring to the United States," says Olaes. As part of the trip, the teens also helped build homes for low-income people in the Philippines. The documentary is 14 parts and lasts around two hours. It can be streamed for free at TheFilipinoSchool.com. 2227

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Carlos woman says a buzzing sound caught her off guard at home. When she looked around, she spotted a drone hovering near her bedroom window, peering in.  Yvette Skalka was hanging her laundry in the backyard on September 6 when she heard the noise. She says she looked up and a small, white drone. “It hovered for a good 3 to 5 minutes.  It gave me an uneasy feeling. It didn’t feel right,” said Skalka. The drone flew up to the top of a palm on the property for a few minutes, before flying back down.“It was near three dogs and driving them crazy, like it was tormenting them,” said Skalka.Eventually, the drone flew off.  Skalka filed a police report and posted details on the Nextdoor app.  Another neighbor responded that she believed the same drone has recently hovered near her ground-floor bedroom, watching her college-age daughter.  That family also filed a police report. 956

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A mom shopping with her one-year-son leapt into action when she found a car burglar inside her SUV in University City.On Wednesday morning at the Vons on Governor Drive, Gloria spent about 15 minutes shopping inside. Her son was sitting in the cart. As soon as she pushed the loaded cart out of the store, her eyes zeroed in on her SUV, parked close to the store."I was kind of in disbelief. Someone was in the car and the passenger door was wide open," said Gloria.Gloria saw a man rummaging through her center console and started screaming. She pushed every button on her key fob."The panic alarm actually went off. Scared the living daylights out of him, and he took off running," said Gloria. Moments after, she found her phone in her purse and starting recording. Surveillance video shows her take off in his direction. Holding tightly to her son, she continued to scream. Still pushing the cart, she followed him. "Definitely adrenaline and pure anger," said Gloria.Gloria has been a victim of three car burglaries in the past five years."I'm going to get you this time. You're not going to do this to anybody else," Gloria kept thinking. Less than a minute later, she followed him across the parking lot to a U-Haul truck before he drove off. She got a photo of him and the license plate. Possibly realizing Gloria got video, the guy ditched the truck, which was recovered hours later. She says police told her it was loaded with stuff: some of her belongings and other items, likely stolen. Police say the license plate led them to a local address, but the man wasn't there. Gloria says a few miscellaneous items were returned to her. A child's wallet remains missing.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call San Diego Police at 619-531-2000. 1790

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man from El Salvador has been granted asylum in the United States after having been sent back to Mexico to await his trial.According to his attorney, Narciso Cruz, the man is only the second person to receive asylum who had been sent back to Mexico due to the Trump administration’s Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP.)“This individual is a bit of a rarity,” said Cruz, referring to his client’s success in court. But his story is not a rarity.Marcos fled violence in El Salvador and did no want to use his full name for this story, still fearing the gang he fled in El Salvador.“They’re a terrorist group,” said Marcos. He became targeted earlier this year after he tried to help his cousin who was being recruited by the gang. After he interfered, he started receiving death threats.“They will kill you and your entire family,” he said.He traveled to the United States, crossing the border on June 25 somewhere near Tecate. He said he wandered in the desert for five days before he was eventually picked up by Border Patrol agents and taken to a holding facility. Within a day he said he was sent back across the border to Mexico where he would wait for his case to be heard. The Trump Administration implemented the MPP in January. Despite some pushback from the courts, the policy, also called “remain in Mexico,” was allowed to go forward. As of September 1, the U.S government has sent 42,000 asylum seekers to Mexico, according to the Department of Homeland Security. As for Marcos, his case is not officially done yet. The government reserved its right to appeal the court’s decision. They have until October 25 to file an appeal. 1659

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A letter from Rep. Duncan Hunter’s attorney to the United States Deputy Attorney General discussed possible evidence of extramarital infidelity and excessive drinking. On August 6, Hunter attorney Gregory A. Vega wrote to Rod Rosenstein at the Department of Justice requesting the postponement of this week's campaign fund misuse indictment, and addressed “an overly aggressive prosecution intent on criminalizing content that is civil in nature”.“While there may be evidence of infidelity, irresponsibility, or alcohol dependence, once properly understood, the underlying facts do not equate to criminal activity; these allegations are, however, intended to embarrass and humiliate the Congressman shortly before a crucial election, and also to alienate him from his wife, the only other person under investigation and his intended co-defendant,” wrote Vega.Prosecutors allege the Hunters used more than 0,000 in campaign funds to support a lavish lifestyle and reported the purchases as campaign expenses. The affidavit detailed money spent on hotel rooms for different individuals and various social outings, including one involving 30 shots of tequila. The relationship between Hunter and each individual mentioned in the affidavit was not revealed.DUNCAN HUNTER INDICTMENT: 1316
