SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border officials say the man shot and killed on Friday night by a Border Patrol agent behind the Las Americas Premium Outlets mall was trying to enter the U.S. illegally.A statement from Aaron Heitke, Chief Patrol Agent for the U.S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sector reads:“On Friday, October 23, 2020, at approximately 5:45 p.m., a United States Border Patrol agent responded to apprehend a man illegally entering the United States immediately west of the port of entry in San Ysidro, California. During the arrest, an altercation ensued and the agent discharged his firearm, wounding the man, who was later identified as an adult Mexican national. Nearby agents and law enforcement personnel responded immediately and initiated lifesaving efforts until emergency medical services arrived. At approximately 6:25 p.m. the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is currently being led by the San Diego Police Department. Customs and Border Protection will continue to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The specifics of this incident have also been shared with FBI, DHS OIG and CBP Office of Professional Responsibility. Additional updates will be provided by the San Diego Police Department, inquiries should be directed to them.”SDPD added Saturday that the 30-year-old man was shot once in the torso by the agent after he fought the agent, who sustained minor injuries.Social justice leaders with the American Friends Service Committee and Alliance San Diego have sent a letter to SDPD calling in part for an independent investigation to be handled only by police, not border officials or unions. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Assemblymember Todd Gloria, D-San Diego, praised state lawmakers for sending a bill to the governor that would restrict gun shows at Del Mar Fairgrounds.Assembly Bill 893 would ban the sale of guns or ammunition anywhere on the Del Mar Fairgrounds property beginning in 2021, according to Gloria's office. The bill passed the California Senate 27-11 Tuesday.Anyone who violates the bill could face a misdemeanor charge, according to the bill.Gloria is a co-author of the legislation alongside Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner-Horvath, D-Encinitas, and Assemblywomen Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego.“This is a victory for gun sense and making our communities safer in San Diego,” said Gloria.“This bill is about offering more than thoughts and prayers. It’s about policy and action and listening to the communities around the Fairgrounds who no longer want these events taking place. In California, we value people over guns and this bill makes that clear."Gov. Gavin Newsom has until Oct. 13 to sign or veto the legislation.Gun shows at the fairgrounds has been hotly debated over the last year. In September 2018, the 22nd DAA's Board of Directors voted to temporarily suspend gun shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds until the state developed new safety policies around them. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border water officials said Tuesday nearly 14.5 million gallons of sewage flowed into the U.S. from Tijuana after a body became trapped in a sewage system.The International Boundary Water Commission (USIBWC) said transboundary flows between about 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, and 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, brought 14,497,873 gallons of treated and untreated wastewater from Tijuana into the Tijuana River Valley.Mexico's International Boundary Water Commission (CILA) informed their U.S. counterparts Sunday that a cleanup crew at a pump station discovered a body trapped inside one of the sewage intake screens, causing a backup and sewage to overflow.RELATED: San Diego leaders present plan to solve Mexican sewage problem"Police got involved and cordoned off the area preventing any activity in the crime area while the investigation continued. A body was trapped inside the intake screens. This caused trash to build up and plug the structure and overflow into the U.S.," the USIBWC's Dawi Dakhil said in an email.It wasn't immediately clear how the person became trapped in the system.The scene was cleared Monday and Mexico water officials rebuilt a temporary berm, or raised bank, to stop the overflow.The CILA pump station was operational as sewage flowed across the border, according to USIBWC.Last month, San Diego officials introduced a 4-million plan to the White House to address the flow of sewage from Mexico into the U.S. The centerpiece was a treatment facility that could process 163 million gallons of runoff per day, with the aim of reducing border sewage flow days from 138 to 12.Officials were reportedly looking into various sources to fund the project, which would likely require help from Congressional leaders.Days after the plan was presented, a broken water line in Tijuana sent a mix of potable water and untreated sewage across the border into the U.S. 1913
