SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Back in 1960, a young Amos Johnson Jr. was studying theology in Berkeley, Calif.It was the first time he was old enough to vote. Although he could cast a ballot without issue here in California, African Americans in southern states faced plenty of challenges."There were so many Jim Crow laws to keep blacks from voting in the south, all the civil rights in the south were really diminished," said Johnson.He describes the years leading up to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which bans racial discrimination in voting, as a time filled with protest and frustration around the country."It was a chaotic time, it was a time of great distress," he said.For the longtime San Diego pastor, the right to vote isn't something he's ever taken for granted. He says since being able to cast a ballot for himself, he's voted in every single election he could."I think that's where the power is. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border Patrol agents say they found human remains in the Tijuana River Valley early Saturday.The agents discovered the human remains near the Tijuana River just before 8:20 a.m. on Dairy Mart Road and Clear Water Way, according to City News Service and Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison.The investigation was turned over to the San Diego Police Department's homicide detectives. 10News has reached out to San Diego Police, but have yet to hear back.No further information was immediately available.City News Service contributed to this report. 572

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction has started on Mission Valley's first public elementary school.The new preschool through 5th-grade campus at the corner of Via Alta and Civita Boulevard will serve residents living in the Civita residential development. Families living in the Mission Valley and Fashion Valley neighborhoods will also make use of the new school.The campus will feature classrooms with roll-up doors that open to the outside for 1st- through 5th-grade students; dedicated play areas for preschool, kindergarten, and 1st- through 5th-grade students; "makerspaces" for students; and an indoor-outdoor multipurpose facility.San Deigo Unified School District provided a virtual walkthrough of the campus here."With more significant growth planned in the area, we must prepare for the influx of new families and students," said Dr. John Lee Evans, Board of Education President.
