(KGTV) - Scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography say atmospheric rivers will be the main source of California's rainfall over the next 80 years.The study, released Tuesday morning, says that could lead to more flooding, more drought and longer wildfire seasons."This region is becoming more sub-tropical and the dry season is expanding," says Alexander Gershunov, a research meteorologist at Scripps. "That is the case with all of the Mediterranean climate regions around the world."Right now, the study says California gets 40-50% of its annual rainfall from atmospheric rivers. Those are long, drawn out rain events that last for days. (CNS) - Four teenagers who allegedly assaulted a cab driver outside a La Mesa restaurant early Wednesday and stole his taxi while threatening him with a gun were arrested a short time later after abandoning the vehicle in a remote industrial area about six miles away, police reported.The group of youths called for a cab shortly before 1 a.m. at Denny's in the 6900 block of Alvarado Road in La Mesa, just east of San Diego State University, according to police.After boarding the Blue Star Cab vehicle, the quartet began quarreling over the fare, Lt. Greg Runge said. Two of them then punched the driver, prompting him to jump out of the taxi, the lieutenant said.At that point, one of the teens got behind the wheel of the cab, pointed a handgun at the victim and drove off, Runge said.Using signals from a GPS-tracking device in the stolen cab, police tracked the vehicle down it in the 10700 block of US Elevator Road in Spring Valley about 20 minutes later. The taxi was unoccupied, but a gun had been left behind inside, the lieutenant said.Officers searched the area with help from a sheriff's helicopter, soon capturing the suspects within a block of the abandoned taxi. The victim and a witness positively identified the group as the alleged perpetrators in a curbside lineup.Arrested were Jaden Razell Jones of Spring Valley and Kaitlyn Arianna Gendleman of El Cajon, both 19; 18-year-old Jacob Ronald Jensen of El Cajon; and a 17-year-old boy. LAKELAND, Fla. — A Polk County judge denied bond Saturday to a Lakeland, Florida city commissioner facing a second-degree murder charge for the deadly shooting of a suspected shoplifter.Commissioner Michael Dunn will remain held without bond at the Polk County Jail, the judge ruled.Dunn was indicted by a grand jury Friday.The commissioner is accused of fatally shooting 50-year-old Christobal Lopez at Dunn's business, Vets Army & Navy Surplus store in Lakeland, Florida, October 3. LINCOLN PARK (KGTV) - For the first time, a member of the drill team at Lincoln High School recalls the moments she was called the N-word at Friday night's football game in San Clemente. Lillian Mixon is a sophomore at Lincoln High School and she tells 10News, "A group of us were walking to the bathroom during halftime and a little boy asked me if I do flag or twirl, and I told him no, I dance, I do drill, and he responded with the N-word." Mixon says it happened again on her way back from the restroom, "I was confused and I was like did she say the N-word to me because this is a grown woman." Immediately, Mixon says, she told two security guards at the game about what happened, "I told the security guard that they were saying racial things to us and the guy looked at me and didn’t respond he just looked and turned away." Meanwhile, Orange County Sheriffs Department released a statement on social media that reads in part, "At the game an individual told deputies that the San Clemente Middle School students were on the visitor side being rowdy and obnoxious and deputies removed them from the area." They went on to say there was no mention of inappropriate language or hate speech. After the game, following normal protocal, Lincoln High athletes and coaches were escorted back to their buses. Mixon says when she got back to the bus she felt awful, "I felt awful after the game and I had to keep it together. After the game I told myself things like this happen but they never happen to me." Only those in the class had access to it and could edit it anonymously.The night before the exam, students like Raymond Arevalo were shocked to see the n-word in it 85 times."I got on the study guide and saw the instance of the n-word, and then I noticed another instance," said Arevalo. "I was really shocked and kind of mad because this wasn't the first time this has happened before in other classes I've been."Arevalo says he has experienced a negative culture in the computer science program at the school. He says far too often minorities and women are targeted in the male-dominated field.He shared images of the defaced midterm online, hoping to raise awareness of the problems he believes exist."People continue to do these things knowing that they won't get in trouble, and it's like a small joke to them, if the person were to get in trouble that would be nice," said Arevalo.The story was first reported in The Triton, an independent, student-run news source.
