SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The attorney for Rebecca Zahau’s family spoke Friday about the San Diego County Sheriff Department’s new review of her death at the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado.Earlier in the day, Sheriff Bill Gore announced that investigators found no evidence that she “died at the hands of another”. The department will not reopen the case.Zahau’s body was found hanging a the Spreckels Mansion in Coronado in 2011. Her wrists and feet were bound. For years, there has been speculation about the nature of her death, which was originally determined to be a suicide.Zahau family attorney Keith Greer suggested Friday afternoon that the Sheriff’s investigators are corrupt. “It’s not a logical decision. There’s something here that’s motivating these folks to do the wrong thing,” he told 10News. “I don’t know how they look at themselves in the mirror,” he added. Greer said that a rational person would not look at the evidence and believe that Zahau’s death was a suicide. Her nude, bound body was found hanging from the balcony of the Spreckels mansion.The death was officially declared a suicide but Zahau's family disagreed. They filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, the brother of Zahau's boyfriend.Shacknai’s lawyers argue there is no physical, eyewitness, or scientific evidence linking him to Zahau’s death.Zahau's mother, Pari Zahau, took the witness stand Thursday morning and gave an emotional testimony as she was asked questions about her daughter.She remembered her as a sweet, loving and religious woman. The jury has three days off and will hear testimony again Monday.The family’s attorney Keith Greer handed Pari Zahau a piece of evidence and asked her to describe what it was.It was an envelope full of cash from Rebecca Zahau addressed to Pari Zahau and her late husband.Pari Zahau explained to the jury her daughter would support her financially by sending cash every month. That envelope was never sent, although one of the final times Pari Zahau talked to her daughter, she was told it would be on the way soon.Pari Zahau had to take a break from testifying when lawyer Keith Greer asked, “Did you ever think Rebecca would kill herself?”She gave a tearful response saying, “No. No, never. Never. My daughter? No. She is very sweet girl and she is very strong. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of killing his parents and sister in a Logan Heights house fire pleaded not guilty in court Tuesday. Wilber Romero, 26, is facing charges that include first-degree murder and arson in the October 13 blaze. The fire started around 4:30 a.m. on the 3100 block of Clay Street. 44-year-old Jose Romero died at the scene while his wife and daughter, Nicolasa Maya-Romero, 46, and Iris Romero, 21, died at the hospital in the days following the blaze.The family’s 23-year-old daughter remains hospitalized. A 16-year-old son, who was injured when he escaped out a window, was released following treatment. Wilber is being held on million bail and faces life in prison if convicted. Court documents show the fire wasn’t the first time he allegedly targeted his family. Wilber reportedly attacked his father with a brick and rocks and damaged his car in September of 2018.The incident prompted a police standoff that ended when police shot bean bags at Wilber and released a police dog, documents show.The documents go on to state Wilber was in a car accident when he was 6-years-old and that he has suffered from a learning disability since the crash.According to the documents, Wilber also struggled with drug addiction. 1461

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The mayor of Temecula has announced his resignation after facing raging criticism over an email stating he didn't “believe there’s ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer." James "Stew" Stewart's comments went viral June 2 and drew a firestorm of calls for his resignation and threats of protests. Stewart made the racist remark in a reply to a constituent "concerned about our police officers and their sensitivity training.""As you know the City of Temecula does not have its own Police Department," Stewart said in his email. "We contract with Riverside County Sheriff's Department.""And I don't believe there's ever been a good person of color killed by a police officer," said Stewart.Stewart posted a copy of the email on his own Facebook page explaining that he is dyslexic and uses voice text, and that he published the note without proofreading what was recorded."I may not be the best writer and I sometimes misspeak, but I am not racist. I deeply regret this mistake and I own it, entirely. I am truly sorry," Stewart said in his resignation letter posted on Facebook late Thursday night.Stewart's comments brought tension to the small tourist destination city during a time in which the nation is seeing daily demonstrations and protests against police killings and racism. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Cabrillo National Monument will extend its opening hours until sunset on Fridays through Sundays in August.The national monument is currently in a phased re-opening. All outdoor areas, trails, and restrooms are open, but indoor areas like exhibits and the lighthouse are closed due to coronavirus restrictions.Normal operating hours for the area are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the tidepools closing at 4:30 p.m. The extended hours will give visitors a chance to take in views of the Pacific Ocean and San Diego during sunset. The monument's tidepool area will also be open until 30 minutes before sunset.Visitors can also get Junior Ranger books and badges, maps, and visitor information at an outdoor station near the visitor center.Officials encourage guests to continue wearing face coverings and physical distance from anyone no apart of their household while visiting.Annual park passes can still be purchased online here.
