LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Dr. Greg Skomal and Meteorologist Joe Merchant are working together as they test a new theory on how sea breeze may correlate with set off a predatory chain reaction.So far their research has taken them to the Bahamas and Cape Cod, both locations on the East Coast, given several recent attacks. Skomal says, "It could be weather conditions it could be water temperature so were testing all these various factors to see if there's any patterns including Joe's ideas that drive the behavior of these sharks." Merchant believes a weather condition called a sea breeze may set off a predatory chain reaction. He says it brings nutrient rich deep water closer to the surface, attracting tiny marine life, which attracts larger fish and in turn attract the oceans largest predators, sharks. Fisheries Research Biologist Heidi Dewar tells 10News, "On the East Coast you have the warm Gulf Stream that moves broad on a continental shelf and our coast we have a cold current coming from the north and a very narrow continental shelf." For this reason, we may not be able to use the same theory for our coast."It's not clear that would translate to the West Coast; we have a very different ecosystem over here," Dewar tells 10News. Dewar says pinpointing sharks' locations and predicting where they will be next is going to require much more data and research. (KGTV) - Three weeks after violence ripped through La Mesa, small businesses continue supporting one another, working toward recovery."It broke our heart when a lot of the glass was busted," Mike Miller said. He recently moved to La Mesa with his wife, Neng, charmed by the small town feel.The looting and destruction the night of May 30th after a rally against injustice sent a shockwave through the community.Leslie Thomas said she watched the horror from her balcony, just a couple blocks away. "We could see the flames and everything coming up, and we didn't sleep much that night but the next morning we got up and we said, 'you know what? We live here, what can we do to fix everything?'"That mantra reflected by hundreds who showed up that Sunday morning to help.As Leslie walked with her husband down the street they noticed "the liquor store on the corner down there, we walked by and we were like, 'Your windows aren't blown out!' and he was like, 'Everyone who knows me, who knows that I'm part of this neighborhood came out and protected my windows and I told them to go home and they wouldn't.' But he was out there giving water to everybody [Sunday] and he didn't question why he was doing it. People were giving out free coffee."A showing of sheer humanity.La Mesa neighbors aren't surprised to hear that generosity is still being extended weeks later.La Mesa Glass replaced the windows at Play It Again Sports June 11th and Bohemian House Saturday for free.The owners of Bohemian House said they were incredibly grateful for their gift, helping them get back to business.10News reached out to La Mesa Glass to ask how many businesses they have supported during this time and have not heard back yet.Neighbors said even the artwork painted over plywood boards standing guard in front of many La Mesa businesses were uplifting. Words and images of hope reminded them how strong and close their community is."I don't think this is going to change us in any way, I actually think it's going to make us a stronger neighborhood," Thomas said, defining La Mesa Strong.Some of the boards have come down but there are still more than a dozen businesses with plywood protecting their broken windows. 2229

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFTS) - An 85-year-old man was bitten by an alligator at a Florida retirement community, the Florida Wildlife Commission said.The incident happened at the Cypress Lakes Retirement Community in Lakeland Monday afternoon.The man was reportedly bitten on the foot and taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center. The extent of his injuries are unknown.Sheriff’s deputies called a wildlife trapper, who removed the gator. Experts estimated its size at 9’9”.Jane Rickel, who lives nearby, said trappers found the man’s white sneaker in the gator’s mouth.“His wife heard him screaming supposedly. And I guess his neighbor came to his rescue. There isn’t a pond in here that doesn’t have alligators,” Rickel said.The retirement community posted on its Facebook page about the incident and reminded residents about safety around alligators. 855

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (KTNV) - A security guard opened fire at a Ross Dress for Less in Las Vegas Saturday, sending customers into hiding for their safety, witnesses said.The shooting happened Saturday around 4 p.m. at the store in the Blue Diamond Crossing strip mall on Blue Diamond Rd.Dramatic video shows Ross customers, including a child, ducking under clothes racks as shots rang out.Watch the video:Witnesses said police arrived and exchanged shots with the gunman, who was hit by police gunfire. He was taken to a hospital for surgery. No one else was hurt.Shoppers at nearby Kohl's and Target stores were evacuated or sheltered in place during the exchange.The security guard was reportedly arguing with the store manager before the shooting. When police arrived, he also fired at them. It is not known at this time why the argument started.No personal information has been released about the security guard.
