SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Connecting children, teens, and families to the power of reading has been the mission of San Diego nonprofit Words Alive for more than two decades.During this pandemic, they haven’t skipped a beat.“The San Diego community is so deeply invested in the importance of literacy and just how critical literacy and education are for the success of our students,” said Rachael Orose, Executive Director for Words Alive.Teaching kids reading and writing skills at a young age is key to that success. Orose said through Words Alive, teachers and volunteers are making sure all students have the opportunity and tools to learn through several different programs, including Read Aloud, Teen Services & Family Literacy.“All of the data tells us if we can make you a reader, your family will be a reader. The students who we serve are often in low-income neighborhoods; they’re wrestling with homelessness, hunger, poverty, violence,” she said.This year alone, Words Alive has received thousand of book donations through community partnerships, most recently on Wednesday.“We picked up just over 1,700 books thanks to a partnership with the San Diego Council on Literacy and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Those books are zero to 18, they’re headed to the Monarch School in the coming weeks,” she said.“With Words Alive, the books actually belong to the students, they’re able to write in them, they’re able to annotate them” said Jeffra Becknell, who teaches high school history at Monarch School, which serves students K-12 impacted by homelessness. “Having a physical book in their hand is such a wonderful feeling.”Becknell has been participating with Words Alive’s Adolescent Book Group program for ten years. “The Adolescent Book Group has been an amazing experience for my students and me; the volunteers come into the classroom, we read a book together, and then we have a book club discussion about it,” she said.During this pandemic, discussions have moved online, but the mission has remained the same.“We had our Adolescent Book Group online; we had it as a Zoom call. Clearly, it’s really different, but it was the same conversation,” said Becknell.Perhaps most importantly, Orose said Words Alive makes representation a priority.“The content reflects their lived experience, the characters look like the students we serve, the authors have similar experiences,” she said.Words Alive currently has more than 1,000 volunteers but is always looking for more. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Data obtained by ABC 10News showed there were more than 150 complaints made to 211 involving a Pacific Beach gym’s violations of public health orders.The data regarding The Gym was compiled starting April 8; overall, there were more than 9,300 complaints from that time period involving violations of public health orders throughout San Diego County.Troy Kahle said he and his husband have been members of The Gym, located on 2949 Garnet Ave., for more than 20 years. Kahle is also a COVID-19 survivor, and he said he’s not sure how he contracted the virus.Kahle has not been to The Gym since he went to the hospital. His husband last went on July 3, and decided it was not safe.RELATED: County confirms coronavirus outbreak at Pacific Beach gym"There are no safety barriers, there are no hand sanitizers, no one is wearing a mask, and no one is socially distancing," Kahle said, passing along what his husband told him from his July 3 gym visit.On July 15, public health orders forced several businesses to close indoor operations, including gyms. But Kahle said they noticed The Gym kept their doors open.Kahle and his husband notified 211 about The Gym's indoor activities on more than one occasion. He said their goal was to prevent the spread of the virus."I can't believe they stayed open as long as they have," Kahle said.During Wednesday's news conference, San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten confirmed there was an outbreak associated with The Gym.The county had ordered it to close last week; The Gym closed on Monday."Last week, when we were working with them to close, we didn't know there was an outbreak there," Wooten said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Coronavirus hospitalizations in San Diego continue to climb, prompting at least one medical system to begin plans to accommodate a surge in patients.As of Thursday, Scripps Health reported that it had 126 COVID-19 patients, up one patient from Wednesday. It also reported two coronavirus-related deaths in 24 hours. Scripps Health is moving forward with its virus patient surge plan by hiring more staff and converting more beds.“We've been staffing up dramatically and our engineers have been preparing for surge which we anticipate [requiring] given the direction hospitalizations are going in San Diego,” says Scripps Health CEO Chris Van Gorder.He says the majority of patients are still in the South Bay hospitals. Their teams have been transferring patients from Scripps Chula Vista and Scripps Mercy to the northern hospitals to avoid reaching capacity in the ICUs.“Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla is 95% occupied in the Intensive Care Unit and Mercy San Diego is 91% [occupied],” he adds.The number of positive tests in the northern hospitals is also rising, he says. “About three days ago, we had six patients within a 24-hour period of time [that had] to be admitted at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas and so their census has doubled over the last week,” he added.San Diego County reported on Wednesday that over a several-week span, hospitalizations were down but had increased in the past two weeks with the most recent daily count being 38 new admissions on Tuesday.The County’s statistics show that we are still far off from reaching bed-capacity.The federal field hospital set up at Palomar Hospital in Escondido continues to sit empty. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border officials seized nearly two tons of drugs valued at millions of dollars at San Diego and Imperial Valley ports of entry last weekend.Between June 14 and June 16, Customs and Border Protection says more than 2,638 pounds of marijuana, 1093 pounds of methamphetamine, and five pounds of heroin were seized after being discovered inside doors, flooring, and other areas of vehicles and a tractor-trailer.In one instance, agents at the Calexico Port of Entry stopped a 34-year-old driver on Friday and referred the driver to a secondary inspection. There, canine agents made a positive detection and the port's imaging system discovered anomalies inside the vehicles flooring.Agents uncovered 40 packages of methamphetamine hidden in the vehicle.The same day, a tractor-trailer was stopped at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, arriving from Mexico with a shipment listed as "watermelons and cactus." An officer referred the driver to a secondary inspection, where a canine officer alerted agents to a positive detection in pallets of watermelons.Agents found 311 packages of marijuana, worth an estimated ,557,000, intermixed with the fruit.During another incident on June 16, agents at the San Ysidro Port of Entry stopped a 35-year-old man where a secondary inspection revealed 86 packages of methamphetamine, with a street value of 3,700.All drivers were turned over to Homeland Security agents for processing and all vehicles and narcotics were seized by CBP. 1494
