ENCINITAS, Calif. -- No dancing allowed. Sounds a little like the movie, “Footloose” right? Well, it’s real — and it’s the law in the city of Encinitas, California.“We got in trouble for people dancing here,” said Brie Cardosa, owner of Mr. Peabody’s Bar and Grill. The restaurant was fined ,000 for allowing their patrons to dance while listening to live music.Cardonas' restaurant has been providing food and live music for more than a decade. She said they have never had any run-ins with the law until they recent fine from the Alcohol Beverage Control.“We didn’t realize we were doing anything wrong,” Cardosa said.The fine stemmed from a city law that makes it illegal to dance in Encinitas during evening hours.Encinitas Councilman Tony Kranz believes his predecessors created the law in 1986 to prevent several dance clubs from being built in the city, or to dissuade people from behaving lewdly at alcohol-serving establishments.“I think it’s just the result of cities trying to limit their liability," he said. "And make it an enjoyable experience for everybody that comes out."The crackdown took place after the city received an overwhelming number of complaints from a number of area bars. Many Peabody’s fans have taken a stand by signing an online petition to let them keep dancing.You can find the petition here. Cardosa said dancing to music is a natural reaction, and found it hard to force her patrons to remain still. “We just don’t want to get in trouble if we’re dancing, or if someone starts moving around,” Cardosa said. “We don’t want to tell them that they can’t dance. It’s such a difficult type thing to explain to someone.”Kranz agrees. “I’ve been there before. and I’ve seen some dancing. I might have even swayed to the music a couple of times there,” he said. “The (Alcohol Beverage Control) interprets their rules that if you sway to the music, you could be in violation of the rules. That is not what city council is interested in having happen.”Encinitas City staff have started work on a revision to the current, and outdated law. In the meantime, Cardosa is hoping the petition persuades the council to let them stay as is. Her other options are to turn in a “deemed approved ordinance” application to temporarily be approved or to submit the “entertainment establishment permit,” also known as the “cabaret permit.” This would allow Mr. Peabody’s to have “dancers“ inside their venue.But that doesn't really align either. “We don’t want to be a dance club. We don’t want to be a dance venue,” Cardosa said. “I hope to have the support of the city behind us, and just you know, move on.”Cardosa said she will continue to host live music at the restaurant several nights a week, without dancing. She is working with city staff to find the best way to legally run her business while making her patrons happy. 2912

ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV) — Law enforcement agencies all around San Diego are working to find out if there are any more overdoses tied to mysterious blue pills that killed four people in East County this week. The pills are advertised as having a "painkiller high."An Encinitas mother, Lisa Nava was watching 10News this morning when she found out about the mysterious blue pills. She recognized them as the same pills her son took before he died three months ago.The memories of her son make her laugh. But the way he died brings Nava to tears. "Your biggest job in your life is to protect your child. I couldn't protect mine," Nava cried.Last year, her son Alex Morgan Nava had a skateboarding accident. He broke his knee, then his ankle. Doctors prescribed him oxycodone for this pain. Little did he know that would lead to an opioid addiction that would eventually kill him. On April 5, 2019, her Alex died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 24 years old. The last three months have been hell for the Nava family. But Friday morning, she saw a particular report on 10News. It was 10News anchor Virginia Cha saying, "Deputies connected some blue pills to the deaths of four people and just 24 hours."She immediately recognized the "blue pills." They were the same pills she confiscated from her son earlier this year. "I had to flush them down the toilet, and that was in January. They were those M-30's. The blue pills," Nava vividly remembered. Since then, the Nava family worked together to help Alex. They took him to the emergency room on multiple occasions. They sent him to a 30-day rehab facility. But Alex was too hooked. "He just made a wrong turn and couldn't turn around. He ran out of time," Nava said. His cause of death was 'Acute polydrug intoxication: Combined effects of acetaminophen and fentanyl-- The tiniest dose of one of the deadliest drugs."We thought he would be one of the lucky ones. But we didn't know that we were dealing with fentanyl," Nava cried.According to the Health and Human Services, around 130 people in America die of opioid overdoses every day. Alex is now one of them. But Nava says your loved one does not have to be if you are vigilant."You never know the last time you were going to see your child," Nava said. "Even the best most advantage children fall victim to these addictions. Check in on them. It's not anything to be casual about. This is an emergency."10News asked all the neighboring law enforcement agencies to see if they found any cases of Blue pill overdoses or deaths. Most of them said they are looking into it. (KGTV) — A police pursuit that started in the South Bay ended in North County Tuesday, with the occupants in a standoff with police.The chase began just after 1 p.m. in National City in the 2300 block of E. 8th St. with a report of a suicidal woman in a vehicle, according to National City Police. Officers arrived to find the car leaving the area with a passenger in the back seat of a Nissan sedan.Officers tried to pull the female driver over, but she refused to stop. She continued onto northbound Interstate 805 and then northbound I-15 in the carpool lanes, police said.Sky10 was live over the standoff this afternoon:CHP officers deployed a spike strip in Rancho Bernardo, which the driver hit while traveling about 70 miles per hour. After losing one tire, she slowed to about 10 mph and continued into Escondido, eventually stopping in a parking lot in the 700 block of E. Valley Parkway.Officers surrounded her vehicle but she refused communicate with police. Officers at the scene said she was seen taking pills in the vehicle and stabbing herself.The passenger exited the car shortly after 2 p.m. Soon after, the driver exited carrying a dog. The driver then handed the dog over to police and was taken into custody, ending the 10-minute standoff.She was transported to a nearby hospital. Police have not said what charges, if any, she faces.
