SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After five days of crews battling flames, the USS Bonhomme Richard ship fire is extinguished. The day after the flames subsided, Navy Admiral Mike Gilday came to San Diego to see the damage for himself and meet the sailors and crews who had battled the fire.“The main takeaway for me this morning was really the people, and we outta be proud of them, and the parents of these sailors outta be proud of them,” said Gilday.Related: Navy officials say all known fires aboard USS Bonhomme Richard are outHe said he met with about 150 people Friday morning to hear their stories of what it was like to fight the fire from the inside. Crews battled temperatures that hit 1000 degrees, even getting as hot as 1200 degrees at one point. He spoke specifically about meeting one petty officer who told him her training on how to fight a fire from the beginning is what prepared her for the battle this past week.“That training set the foundation for the way she operated and behaved and acted over the past several days. She was very proud of what she did and the teamwork that was involved,” he said.He added that two of the factors that made it difficult to put out the fire were the high winds and the explosions.“This fire probably couldn’t have been at a worse point on this ship in terms of its source that allowed it to spread up elevator shafts as an example, up exhaust stacks,” he said, adding that “there were times when he had to back those firefighters off the ship. At one point the explosion was so great that it blew the debris across the pier and onto the ship that was across the way.”The Admiral also talked about what’s next for the ship. He said the next steps are doing a safety investigation, a criminal investigation (which he added is typical), a command investigation to look at the procedures in place and what crews did right or wrong, and finally an assessment of the structural, mechanical and electrical damage, which will be done with the help of the people who built and know the ship.The Navy has not decided if the USS Bonhomme Richard will be recovered.“I am 100% confident that our defense industry can put this ship back to sea, but the question is should we make that investment in a 22-year-old ship,” said the Admiral.A spokesperson for the Navy confirmed that the flames have all been extinguished, but crews continue to watch for hot spots popping up. 2411

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook Ridgecrest Friday night, a day after a 6.4 quake rattled the same area of Southern California.Friday's tremor happened at 8:19 p.m. and was centered 11 miles outside the high desert town. It was felt throughout southern California and as far east as Las Vegas. The quake was described as a rolling motion that seemed to last at least a half-minute.No deaths are reported as a result of the violent earthquake, according to Kern County Fire Department Chief David Witt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego-area man and his grandmother filed a federal lawsuit against two San Diego County Sheriff's Deputies.The lawsuit alleges deputies responded to the wrong address and pulled a then-17-year-old out of his apartment. "I've never experienced something like that," said Cesar Jaramillo.Jaramillo says last October he was watching TV on the couch when he heard a knock at the door. He says deputies asked if someone from the residence called 911.According to his lawsuit, "Cesar informed defendants the call was not from his residence. When defendants asked Cesar if there was a young black female in the apartment, Cesar said 'No,' and informed defendants that they were at the wrong apartment building. Cesar knew who defendants were referencing and knew they lived in the other building. Cesar informed the deputies over half-a-dozen times that defendants were at the wrong building."Jaramillo tells 10News he complied with everything the deputies asked but felt like they didn't believe him."That's when I started closing the wide door, that's when he just reached in and grabbed my hand," Jaramillo said.The lawsuit claims, "Without warrant or probable cause, both defendants unreasonably lured Cesar to unlock and open the door, then entered into Plaintiff's residence and forcibly pulled Cesar by the forearms into submission, leaving instant bruises on both arms."Jaramillo's grandmother was in the back of the house at the time and said she woke up to the commotion."I saw my grandson laying on the ground, in handcuffs and I went crazy, and I said, what is happening," said Teodora Villalobos.According to the lawsuit, "Due to unreasonable seizure and force used on her grandson Cesar, as well as defendants' indifferent attitude, Teodora began having heart complications on scene."Jaramillo's lawsuit alleges negligence, battery, and unreasonable search and seizure, among other things.10News reached out to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department for comment, but a spokesperson they can't comment on pending litigation. 2066

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego woman bought a puppy for her kids. Four hours later, it was dead. Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to local veterinarians who say that a new state law is, in part, to blame. “It was beautiful. It was sweet,” says Enjoli Spaulding of her former Golden Retriever puppy. The San Diego mother of three had been looking for a family Golden Retriever for some time. She checked with formal breeders but the prices were high. “Those dogs are about ,500, minimum,” she tells us. Then she found an adorable Golden Retriever puppy for 0 on a buy-sell website called Recycler.Spaulding, along with her mother, Kathy Pardini, met the seller in a parking lot.“[The puppy] seemed like it had been very loved,” says Pardini. Spaulding adds, “She gave me a vaccination record. She also gave me a bill from the vet when the dog had a physical exam.” The deal appeared to be legitimate, so Spaulding handed over the cash, and they went to surprise her son at school. “He said, ‘Mom, you got me a dog! My very own dog!’ He was just over the moon,” she tells us.The family took the puppy home and played with it in the backyard. “My daughter got her tea set ready,” says Spaulding. Then the playtime took a terrifying turn. Parvovirus suddenly wreaked havoc on the puppy’s bowels and it was bleeding. The puppy was rushed to the hospital, where he was put down. The family was devastated. “The vet told me the dog had been sick for a long time. This was not a new situation,” she tells 10News.“It was surreal,” adds Pardini.Spaulding says the seller would not return her calls. She also discovered that the puppy’s paperwork from the seller was apparently forged. “It was a completely fake document,” she says. She has since filed a police report.Dr. Scott DiLorenzo is a veterinarian and owner of Escondido's Animal Urgent Care. “We have seen an uptick in these cases,” he tells 10News. He says a new California law is part of the problem. It bans pet stores from selling dogs, cats and rabbits, unless they come from shelters or rescues. The law was intended to stop harmful breeding operations like puppy mills. Yet now, consumers aren't always sure where to turn to for specific breeds that they want. “There's just limited sources for people to go out and get the breeds that they want so they're turning to unvetted websites,” adds Dr. DiLorenzo.The American Kennel Club writes, in part, to 10News, "The uptick in this trend corresponds precisely with the implementation of California's new ban on the sale of purpose bred pets at regulated pet shops…”San Diegan Lisa Hexom says she got scammed with a sick dog, too. “I don't want to lose him,” she cries from the veterinary hospital.
