LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - An explosive fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at a home in Lemon Grove, Heartland Fire officials said.The flames erupted at 1783 Dupont Drive just before 4 p.m. and were accompanied by explosions, according to firefighters. When crews arrived at the scene, the home was 50 percent engulfed in flames.The Sheriff's Department told 10News neighboring homes were evacuated due to the safety risk.Crews at the scene resuscitated a cat in the front yard, 10News reporter Matt Boone said. It ran away after crews helped it.No one was injured.There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire. 628

(KGTV) - A man went on a towering mission up a pole, a day after vandals left their mark at an American Legion post in La Mesa, including the burning of a flag.Just before 8 p.m. Saturday, a burning American flag was recorded being hoisted up a pole at American Legion Post 282. Before the night would end, vandals would also tag walls and shatter windows there. But it was the image of the burning flag that sent Cory into action after he saw the video Sunday morning."Really got me sad and upset at the same time," said Cory.A short time later, Cory was spotted on a flag pole outside the American Legion post, after a drive from his home in Lakeside. The CrossFit enthusiast making that 60-foot climb, quickly."My wife said, 'It was the look in my eye. Something I had to do,'" said Cory.After shooting to the top, Cory would thread a new rope he brought along, before going back down and hanging the new flag, an extra one he had been storing in his home. Cory isn't in the military but has family and friends who have served."Everyone has a right to protest, but I think it went too far when they disrespected the flag," said Cory.A short time later, Post Commander Jack Porath heard about Cory's lofty feat."I could not have been more proud of someone doing that," said Porath.For Porath, his emotional compass did a complete 180. After a night of heartbreak caused by the vandalism, he discovered some newfound optimism. In the middle of our interview with Cory, Porath phoned in. They spoke for the first time."What you did was wonderful and courageous. My hat is off to you," said Porath."Just me doing my part. We appreciate what you and other veterans have done. Simpson at The Cosmopolitan Wednesday. Simpson was thrown out of the hotel-casino after accusations of being drunk. According to two witnesses, Simpson wasn't seen drinking and was not being unruly."He was very nice, very cordial," said Michelle Messer.Simpson's lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne, told KTNV that the story about Simpson being drunk at The Cosmopolitan is completely untrue.LaVergne says that Simpson is a social drinker, meaning he usually orders one drink and sips on it while socializing, and that he was at the Cosmopolitan to eat chicken wings.LaVergne also told KTNV that the hotel-casino had apparently decided before Simpson's visit to trespass him from the property. LaVergne says that after Simpson was notified, he left the hotel-casino quietly.In addition, Simpson is challenging anyone with proof that he was drunk and belligerent to come forward. LEMON GROVE, Calif (KGTV) -- A bicyclist was struck and killed by a car in Lemon Grove Thursday evening.According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened around 7:50 p.m. near Massachusetts Avenue and Westview Place, just south of State Route 94.Deputies say when they arrived at the scene and found a male bicyclist with visible injuries to his legs.Paramedics rushed the bicyclist to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim's name and age were not immediately available.The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash.Anyone with any information regarding the crash is asked to call the San Diego County Sheriff's Department at 619-337-2000. 772
