OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Parents in one North County school district are reacting to new numbers that show a sharp increase in the number of failing grades during virtual learning.Scotti Taylor has two children attending Mission Vista High: her son, a freshman, and her daughter, a junior. She says since the school year started in early September with virtual learning, both her children have struggled."Both of my kids normally have a 4.0 across the board. Now they're slipping down to low B's," said Taylor.Taylor says her daughter is struggling the most with virtual learning."I do think she's not as engaged. She's really struggling with focus. They don't have the same peer relationships or teacher relationships ... During class, she's mentioned many times that it's difficult to figure out what's going on. Sometimes she can't read the data on the screen," said Taylor.Taylor's children are not alone in their struggles. Vista Unified just released its six-week progress report for all of its high schools. During that time frame, it was all virtual learning. The number of F's that stand as the current class grade total more than 6,000. Last year at the same time, the number was more than 2,000, an increase of more than 200%. The number of students receiving F's in at least half of their classes increased from 3.9% in 2019 to 20.7% this year.In late October, Carlsbad Unified School District released an eight-week progress report and a similar finding, with F grades increasing by more than 300%.Taylor's kids are about to resume in-person learning Monday. If that option gets shut down again, she's worried about how her daughter's distance learning grades will affect her future."100% we are worried about how this is affecting college ... We are scared and nervous," said Taylor.Vista Unified officials released the following statement: 1863

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego Humane Society is asking for the public's help in solving an animal cruelty investigation. Around 5:30 p.m. on April 29 Humane Officers received a call about a loose goat running in and out of traffic at the busy Oceanside intersection of College Boulevard and Marvin Street.Oceanside resident Scott Palmer made the call when he noticed the goat on his commute home. “I literally told him to sit and stay, don’t know what I was thinking but I tried to distract him, and then he followed me to my car," said Palmer.Palmer described him as being as friendly as a dog.A Humane Law Officer picked up the goat and then received surveillance video of the incident. The footage shows two people abandoning the goat and driving away in a 4-door, white pickup truck.“It’s ok for you to come to us, please don’t abandon your animals when you can bring them to San Diego Humane Society and we'll take care of it for you," said Dariel Walker, with the Humane Society. She says if you cannot afford the fee, the Humane Society can still help. If you have any information on the suspects or have surveillance video call Humane Law Enforcement: 619-299-7012The suspects face misdemeanor charges. 1230

On Monday, social media website Reddit banned r/The_Donald, a subreddit devoted to discussing President Donald Trump, as a part of a purge of more than 2,000 groups on the site that were in violation of the social media site's rules, according to The New York Times and The Verge. The move marks a stark change in Reddit policy. Previously, Reddit has allowed groups and individuals more leeway when censoring content on the site.Launched in 2015 along with Trump's presidential campaign, r/The_Donald grew to nearly 800,000 members before it was removed from Reddit. While the group did not have any affiliation with Trump or the Trump campaign, the then-Republican nominee participated in an "Ask Me Anything" discussion in the group during the 2016 presidential campaign. The group has become known for a breeding ground for conspiracy theories. According to reports, the group helped propel the "Pizzagate" theory that led to the arrest of an armed man at a D.C.-area pizza restaurant shortly after the 2016 election. It also routinely hosted Islamophobic discussions and promoted other content many considered to be racist.According to a disclaimer, Reddit says r/The_Donald was banned violating Rules 1 (harassment, threats of violence), 2 (spamming, vote manipulation) and 8 (don't break the site or do anything that interferes with the normal use of Reddit).Reddit had previously taken steps to curtail r/The_Donald. In June 2019, the network "quarantined" the site, meaning that the subreddit would not show up in search results and could not appear on the site's front page. In addition, anyone attempting to visit the forum would be met with a warning screen. The move comes about three weeks after Reddit published a blog post outlining changes to the social network's policies. Earlier this month, several large groups on the site went dark in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and in response to Reddit's lack of policing of hateful content on its site.As part of Monday's purge, r/ChapoTrapHouse — a subreddit based on the left-wing podcast of the same name — was also banned from the site.According to The Verge, several other larged subreddits were banned on Monday.r/DarkHumorAndMemesr/ConsumeProductr/DarkJokeCentralr/GenderCriticalr/imgoingtohellforthis2r/soyboys 2297

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A police officer who arrested two 6-year-old students at a Florida elementary school last week has been fired.Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon announced Officer Dennis Turner's termination Monday afternoon. He says he reminded other officers of department policy that prohibits arrests of children under 12 without a manager's approval.State Attorney Aramis Ayala, head prosecutor of Orange and Osceola counties, said earlier Monday she was dismissing misdemeanor battery charges against both children. Officials didn't say what prompted the arrests. The girl's grandmother, Meralyn Kirkland, told WKMG News 6 in Orlando the girl wasn't sleeping well because of a medical condition and kicked a staff member Thursday at Lucious and Emma Nixon Academy. She says a school resource officer handcuffed the girl and took her to a juvenile detention center. 881
