SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Portions of San Diego County are gearing up for more dry, windy weather as a red flag warning and potential power outages loom.According to the National Weather Service, the warning goes into effect from 4 a.m. Monday through 10 p.m. Tuesday for the mountains and valleys.The agency says east winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour are expected, with gusts up to 50 miles per hour and isolated gusts up to 60 miles per hour.RELATED: Check your local forecastHumidity will also be low, with values around 10%, the agency said Sunday.“Any fires that develop will spread rapidly. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person is dead after his SUV careened off Interstate 5 near Pacific Beach Tuessday.A driver was traveling on northbound I-5 near Garnet Ave. just before 2 p.m. when a witness tells 10News the white Toyota RAV 4's passenger-side wheels became caught on the freeway guardrail. As the vehicle continued it fell off I-5, traveled down an embankment, and landed on its top on Garnet Ave. below the freeway. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More local employees are losing their employer health insurance benefits during the COVID-19 crisis.10News was contacted about employees at the San Marcos Veterinary Clinic who were apparently working just as many hours but their medical benefits have been dropped.10News spoke to the owner of the clinic on Thursday who said she was forced to make the tough and emotional call to drop her 13 employees' health benefits, including her own, in order to keep them on the payroll and keep the clinic’s lights on during the pandemic. She said the decision was made out of desperation. Not greed.On Thursday, 10News interviewed Anthony Wright with Health Access California, a consumer advocacy group. “A stay in the hospital for say seven or ten days on a ventilator, which is the treatment for having a severe case of this virus, could be in the tens of thousands of dollars if you're not covered” he told 10News.So, what if you lose your coverage during the pandemic? Wright told 10News that Californians can try COBRA, which temporarily extends your same employer-based health plan, but there’s a downside. “That's a very expensive option for most people,” he added.Wright said a better option could be Covered California, the state's health insurance marketplace that allows individuals to buy coverage at federally subsidized rates.Covered California’s open enrollment period has been extended through June, amid concerns over the virus. “How much Covered California costs is very much dependent on your current income. It's a percentage of your income on a sliding scale,” he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Peeps are traditionally a sign of Spring: brightly colored marshmallow candy that’s front and center on store shelves.Long after Easter, Peeps, made by the Just Born company, appear to stay fresh as ever, seemingly indestructible in their pastel packages.In 2002, 10News put the durability of the everlasting marshmallows to the test. Reporter Herb Cawthorne, photographer Richard Klein and producer Revelle Anderson put Peeps on camera.The inspiration was simple, according to Klein. “We were sitting around talking about the purpose behind the Peep,” Klein said.That led to an elaborate shoot at San Diego locations. The candy was shot, run over, thrown off a five-story tower, and stomped with a crane."During the entire shoot I chewed on a Peep. It never got smaller. I wondered how we ate them as kids,” Cawthorne told 10News in 2018.The 2002 video shows only children eating the Peeps.Adults may want to take notice. Peeps are gluten-free and fat-free.Since their inception Peeps have crossed over into other holidays as well, now available in a variety of shapes for Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, and the summer season.Peeps were first created in 1953 by laboriously hand-squeezing marshmallow through pastry tubes, according to Just Born.
