A species of turtle that was believed to have been extinct 20 years ago is making a comeback.The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) said in a press release this month that the Burmese roofed turtles now appear to be in little danger of biological extinction.Conservationists with WCS and Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) rediscovered the creatures, which have natural smirks on their faces, in the wild in the early 2000s.Now, conservationists monitor sandbanks in Myanmar that female turtles use as nesting sites. Eggs are collected, incubated under natural conditions and then the offspring are “head-started” for eventual repatriation into the Chindwin River, WCS says.Conservationists say the captive population of these turtles is approaching 100,000.WCS says complementary conservation efforts are focused on the remaining wild population, which consists of five to six adult females and perhaps as few as two males.Steven G. Platt with WCS told The New York Times that if conservationists didn’t intervene, the turtle species would be gone for good.But while the species is headed in a good direction, Platt cautioned that unsustainable fishing practices remain a problem for the turtles’ recovery in nature. 1222

A teenage worker at a Chili's restaurant in Baton Rouge says she was attacked by a large group of women while trying to enforce COVID-19 restaurant guidelines.According to WAFB, 17-year-old Kelsy Wallace was working her hostess position at the Chili's on Constitution Avenue when she was attacked by a group of 11 or more women on Sunday, August 9.The women had apparently become irate after requesting to be sat together. Wallace said that restaurant policy only allows for groups of up to six to sit together.Wallace tells WAFB that she got the manager to deal with the women when an exchange of words between Wallace and the women led to an altercation.One woman, according to Wallace, took a wet floor sign and struck her near her eye.Officers were called to the scene but the women had left by the time they arrived.Wallace was taken to the hospital to get stitches for her eye. During the altercation, some of her hair was pulled out and nails broke. A proposed state fund would pay rent for people on the brink of eviction to help them avoid homelessness.The 0 million fund is a key part of Gov. Gavin Newsom's budget proposal to address the state's homeless crisis. The fund, called the California Access to Housing and Services fund, could also be used to support the creation of more housing units and help stabilize board and care housing facilities. Newsom is proposing a .4 billion plan as part of his annual budget. Of that, 5 million would go to investments in Medi-Cal. The proposal also calls for the state using its own excess land for the site of new shelters. That includes open space near freeways, decommissioned hospitals and fairgrounds. The Del Mar Fairgrounds board has held preliminary discussions adding housing on the property. In San Diego County, excess property locations are also in downtown, El Cajon and Oceanside. An additional location deemed excess has instead been assigned to serve as a shelter for migrants seeking asylum. Jewish Family Service will operate the facility, and has requested the location not be disclosed due to security reasons. The current migrant shelter at the old family courthouse downtown at 6th and Cedar will close Dec. 31 for redevelopment. 1266

Their screentime together lifts the film to its greatest heights, conjuring a simmering dynamic that infuses excitement into the moribund story.The historical fiction drama, set in the 1840s, imagines the personal life of pioneering British paleontologist Mary Anning (Winslet), who was marginalized by the scientific community boy's club. Reduced to peddling fossils to wealthy tourists in order to support her ailing mother (Gemma Jones), Mary develops an exterior as hard and impenetrable as the bones and rocks she unearths.Mary grudgingly agrees to make some extra money by caring for Charlotte (Ronan), the ailing wife dumped off on her by one of her clients. At first, Mary sees Charlotte as a privileged nuisance who can't connect to her life of science and struggle, but they find common interests and angsts, causing the ice between them to slowly crack. They steal moments of intimacy amid their struggle-filled life, finding joy and passion neither imagined was waiting for them. Left unspoken -- but weighing heavily all along -- is the realization that the social values and customs of the time all but doom their prospects.Director Francis Lee ("God's Own Country") shows an eye for sweeping visuals and an ear for intimate moments. He's not as adept at infusing his story with much urgency, though. Many scenes unfold as lingering tone poems meant to set the scene and color the characters. The drawback is that the movie moves so slowly that it's easy to lose interest and drift away."Ammonite" is often as dull and opaque as its title, but worth watching for the two lead performances, as well as its intricately spun tale of a complicated friendship and love.
