SHENYANG, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Some 253,500 residents have been safely evacuated in northeast China's Liaoning Province after torrential rains caused waters to rise to the highest level in more than a decade along a major river bordering China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), local officials said Sunday.The hundreds of thousands of residents, mostly in Dandong City, were relocated in less than 24 hours from late Saturday to Sunday, provincial flood control authorities said. Among those rescued was a 23-year-old woman who gave birth to a healthy baby just hours after she was air-lifted out of the flood zone.No new casualties were reported on Sunday. Previously, authorities said four people were killed and one remains missing following floods in Dandong, a border city facing Sin'uiju City in the DPRK.Heavy rainfalls that began Thursday have swelled the Yalu River, which marks the border of China and the DPRK. On Saturday night, the water level at one monitoring station in Dandong rose to 2.35 meters above the warning line, the highest in a decade and the second highest since records began being kept in 1934.However, water levels began to dip late Sunday as rains stopped, though provincial authorities warned that the danger has not yet passed.Workers are racing to build sand bag flood barriers along part of the river where the water has overflowed. Over two thousand soldiers and crews have been mobilized to rescue stranded residents. About 70 vehicles, 38 speed boats and six helicopters were used in the rescue operations, local officials said.BABY BORNOn Sunday, a healthy baby weighing 3.9 kilograms was born in the Women and Children's Hospital of Dandong. He asked local authorities to promptly evacuate residents, and speedily restore transport and telecommunication facilities in the area.The Vice Premier asked the local water, meteorological, and land authorities to closely monitor the situation and issue prompt forecasts and warnings on the floods and rain.Monitoring geological risks should be immediately launched in the towns, villages, and areas along roads and railway tracks, Hui said.Dangerous zones should be marked and people should be prevented from entering such risky areas.Hui said more work was needed to be done to ensure residents have food to eat and water to drink. CHENGDU, July 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 23 people have been killed and 30 are still missing as of Sunday evening after the worst rainstorm of the year lashed southwest China's Sichuan Province late Friday, the provincial civil affairs department said.More than 586,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes as torrential rains pounded 62 counties and cities in the province and triggered mountain torrents, landslides and house collapses, cutting off roads, electricity and communications in some regions.Half of the worst-hit Quxian County remains flooded, with water levels of up to 10 meters deep. The county is cut off from the outside world, with roads and railways flooded by waters, according to a spokesman with the department."We can only see the roofs of most riverside houses in Qujiang Town and Jubei Town," said Deng Yuhua, secretary of the county's Party committee.Further, rains are still pelting eastern parts of the province, which will probably aggravate the situation, said the spokesman.Flooding is forecasted to peak in Guang'an City, at the lower reaches of Qujiang River, on Monday.The provincial government has dispatched work teams and allocated emergency funds of 5 million yuan (about 730,000 U.S. dollars) to support flood relief operations.Parts of China experience heavy rains every summer, but this year's rains have been particularly devastating.Since the beginning of July, torrential rains and severe flooding has left 146 people dead and 40 missing and forced the evacuation of more than 1.3 million people as of 4 p.m. Friday in 10 provinces, mostly along the Yangtze River, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
