AUSTIN, Texas – Inside a restaurant called “The Pita Shack,” Ayman Attar Bashi recreates part of his culture through the food served in his restaurant. “We are lucky,” he said. He and his family are lucky because a decade ago, they fled violence in Iraq, becoming refugees and resettling in Austin, Texas. “To be a refugee is not a choice,” he said. “Not a choice.” Refugees like Ayman, though, may no longer be able to count on Texas for a fresh start. Governor Greg Abbott said the state has already done more than its fair share. In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Gov. Abbott said that since 2010, “…roughly 10% of all refugees resettled in the United States have been placed in Texas.” He added that, “in addition to accepting refugees all these years, Texas has been left by Congress to deal with disproportionate migration issues resulting from a broken federal immigration system.” “There had been 41 other governors that had had come out and said, ‘yes, our state we would love to continue to accept refugees’ and that was a mix of Democrats and Republican governors, and so Gov. Abbott was the very first who had said no,” said Russell Smith, with Refugee Services of Texas, the largest resettlement agency in a state. Last year, Texas took in 2,227 refugees – the most of any state. It was followed by Washington, with 1,930 and California with 1,802. Overall, America is admitting fewer refugees. Back in 2016, President Barack Obama set a limit of 110,000 for the 2017 fiscal year. This year, President Donald Trump is setting a limit of 18,000. Though a judge put a temporary stop to the Texas plan, the potential for refugees to be rejected looms large here. “Every action has negatively affected resettlement at the same time,” Smith said. Whether the plan eventually goes through – or gets permanently rejected by the courts – remains to be seen. Back at his restaurant, Ayman says he and his family feel safe and welcomed in Austin. “You’re an active element in this community because we’re hiring people, we are providing people with good food, spread our culture – at the end of the day, you feel like you are doing a lot of good things in this community,” he said. The Trump administration has not said yet whether it will seek to appeal the federal judge’s decision, which stopped Texas from refusing refugees. 2356

Paycheck Protection Program funds helped keep more than 5 million American small businesses alive through the first half of 2020, but one woman has a warning for anyone applying for aid.Kelleye Thomas, who runs a home daycare, had to shut down for three months due to the pandemic. Her income dropped to zero during the shutdown, but like so many small business and independent workers, she was saved by the government's Paycheck Protection Program."I applied for that through the Small Business Administration, and I was granted a forgivable loan for ,500," she said. That lifeline turned into a financial nightmare because of where she deposited the funds. Before she could even begin using the money, she said, Fifth Third Bank locked her account pending a fraud investigation."The check was deposited, and a few days later I noticed there was a freeze on my account," she said.Panicked, she called the bank."They let me know I needed a business account to receive the funds from this loan," Thomas said.Risk of using your personal accountA lot of independent workers and small business owners use just one account for everything because it is so much easier. But doing that can be very risky if you are getting any sort of federal aid.Business Insider says PPP loans must be put into a separate account to prevent:Payroll errors.Accidental misuse.Questions from your bank. That's what happened here, where the bank's investigation locked her out from all her money. As a result, she was unable to pay some of her most essential bills."I couldn't pay my mortgage or buy food or pay my credit card bills," she said.So we contacted her bank, Fifth Third Bank, where spokeswoman Laura Trujillo told us: "We take potential fraud seriously and are diligent stewards of our customers' money."Because the bank found no fraud in this case, it unlocked Thomas' accounts after our inquiry. Now, she's warning others about mixing pandemic aid with personal funds."I have always had my daycare money deposited into my personal account, and no one ever said anything about it or said I needed to open up a business account," she said.Business Insider says there is one more reason to keep PPP money separate: Eventually having the loan forgiven. Getting forgiveness can be much tougher if all your funds are commingled. So keep tight records, so you don't waste your money._________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. According to a Pew study, the number of online daters ages 55 to 64 years old has doubled from 2013 to 2015. "It's harder to meet people in your own age demographic," says matchmaker Michelle Frankel. However, Frankel says if you're looking for love, now is the time to begin your next chapter. "For those people who don't have a significant other, they start saying, ‘How can I make this different in 2019? What can I do to make changes?’ And the easiest and lowest hanging fruit is to jump online," Frankel says. The first Sunday in January has become the hottest day to hop online for dating because it’s the busiest. There are two types of online dating, according to Frankel. “The traditional and the modern,” she explains. “The modern is the apps on the phone: the Hinge, the Tinder, Bumble. The over 50 crowd, I would really steer away from that." As for traditional online dating, Frankel recommends sites like Match, eharmony and Our Time. When it comes to your dating profile, Frankel says to have three great photos of just you and eight to 10 sentences describing who you are and what you like to do. And whatever you do, she says don't say, “I can’t believe I'm doing this.” Remember, no matter how long it takes, Frankel says to trust there's someone out there for you. "It does truly work,” she says. “It really comes down to having the same values and wanting to spend your life the same way." 1431

Many parents are wondering how schools could look different if they reopen in the fall. The Pima County, Arizona, superintendent toured a charter school today. The principal of Da Vinci Tree Academy invited Dustin Williams to look at a preliminary model that follows CDC guidelines. Williams says, “I saw the partitions up and I said, Whoa. I haven't seen a model like that. This is one of the first models I've seen in class. But I have to accept we're in unprecedented times and safety has to be paramount for everybody.” <div class="Figure-credit" itemprop="author">KGUN 906
