The cost for each veteran for the three- day trip is roughly ,500 and is covered through donations to Honor Flight as well as fundraising events like the rotary club's annual Golf for Heroes tournament. The San Diego Downtown Rotary Club raised the money at the most recent tournament through a silent auction. According to the organization, the USS Midway Foundation also contributed ,000 to the donation total. The tournament has generated more than 0,000 since 2005.RELATED:Hundreds welcome veterans home from Honor Flight San DiegoStrangers fulfill San Diego veteran's wish ahead of Honor FlightBrothers Journey: San Diego Honor Flight returns homeHonor Flights usually occur twice a year, in the spring and the fall, with priority given to the country's oldest veterans and veterans with terminal medical conditions. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego County health officials this weekend reported 310 new COVID-19 cases and no additional deaths, raising the region's totals to 10,794 cases while the death toll remained at 338.The number of COVID-19 tests reported to the county Saturday was 4,413, with 7% positive new cases. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive tests is 2.8%.As of Sunday, the number of cases requiring hospitalization was 1,619 and the number admitted to an intensive care unit was 449.The largest portion of cases, 2,152, have been found in residents age 20 to 29 years old. The second largest portion of cases, 2000, is among residents 30 to 39.Personal care businesses such as skin care and waxing salons, tattoo parlors, massage therapists and nail salons were allowed by the county to reopen Friday.Community-transmitted COVID-19 outbreaks have activated one of the county's public health triggers, placing a pause on any additional openings allowed by the state."We continue to implore the public to wear facial coverings and avoid having gatherings at your home," San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said. After public health officials Thursday reported eight community- transmitted outbreaks in San Diego County in the past week, Fletcher said any further openings allowed by Gov. Gavin Newsom wouldn't be implemented until numbers go down.As part of the 13 public health triggers announced earlier this month, the county could take industry-specific actions, pause all reopening efforts or even dial back reopenings if enough of the metrics rise above a certain threshold. The threshold for community outbreaks -- defined as three or more lab-confirmed cases from different households -- was fewer than seven in a week's span. Two new community outbreaks were reported Friday, offsetting three outbreaks which "fell off" the county's one-week rolling monitoring period. The total number of outbreaks in a community setting is now at seven, which keeps the metric at a caution level.Fletcher did not report where exactly the new outbreaks occurred, and he said doing so would "undermine" cooperation the county was receiving from businesses and other locations to report COVID-19 outbreaks.Wooten, suggesting how long the COVID-19 pandemic could impact the region, said it may not be safe for people to have gatherings at their homes "until sometime next year," a far cry from the mid-March hopes of flattening the curve and ending the pandemic."With the reopenings, people think we can go back to the pre-COVID existence, and we cannot," she said. The county launched an interactive website early last week that allows residents to find COVID-19 testing locations near them. The website can be found at 211sandiego.org. 2752

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sixteen new cases of COVID-19 were reported Saturday by San Diego State University, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 1,064 since Aug. 24, the first day of instruction for the fall semester. The new totals reported by Student Health Services reflect numbers as of 6 p.m. Friday.Of the students living on campus, 380 have tested positive and students living off campus totaled 663 positive cases, health services said. A total of eight faculty or staff members have tested positive and 13 "visitors," people who have had exposure with an SDSU-affiliated individual, have tested positive. The information is based on cases reported to Student Health Services by an individual or by a public health official. As more private labs are administering tests, there is a possibility that not all cases are being reported to Student Health Services. For privacy reasons, SDSU does not report names, affiliations or health conditions of students, faculty or staff who test positive for COVID-19 unless a public health agency advises that there is a health and public safety benefit to reporting such details. The university will also not disclose the specific location of the individual who was infected for privacy reasons and also because avoiding the physical location does not inherently lower a person's risk of infection. 1353

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The National Institutes of Health awarded San Diego State University a grant of nearly million to build a center for medical research on health issues in San Diego and Imperial counties, the university announced today.SDSU received the grant from the NIH's National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, which supports schools that serve large populations of minority students. According to university officials, 31.5 percent of SDSU's first-year undergraduate students are members of at least one underrepresented minority. The .9 million grant is the second-largest the school has ever received, after a million federal grant the university received in 2014 to expand to the country of Georgia.NIH is expected to administer the grant over five years to fund construction of the HealthLINK Center, multiple research projects and annual seed funding for four researchers pursuing pilot projects."This a wonderful recognition of the faculty's excellence in health disparities research, and a significant opportunity to build on that excellence so that SDSU can remain a leader in this field for years to come," said Stephen Welter, SDSU's vice president for research.SDSU expects to work with local health care agencies and providers like the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency, Family Health Centers of San Diego and Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo Inc. through the HealthLINK Center. Two professors, Guadalupe Ayala and Kristen Wells, are currently leading the project.Construction is already underway on the HealthLINK Center, which is slated for completion by the end of 2019. 1642
