Those enhancements to the fan experience are exactly why Mary Haskett and her business partner created Blink Identity. "We developed a sensor that can identify people using biometric face matching at full walking speed at any light, even in total darkness," Haskett explains. Blink Identity was demonstrated at the KNOW Conference in Las Vegas, where dozens of startups specializing in identity technology featured new products. Here’s how it works: First, users register their information, like name and email address, on Blink Identity’s website. Next, users take and upload a selfie of themselves. The photo is then put into Blink’s database. The next time that user goes to an event, the facial recognition technology scans the user’s face and gives the green light to go in. If the scanner does not recognize the person, a red light appears and an alert sounds, letting security know that person isn’t authorized to enter. The technology will cut down on ticket scams and scalpers. Scalpers won't be able to buy tickets in bulk and jack up the prices, because there's no face registered to the ticket. This technology will also spot fake tickets, too. Blink is still testing the technology, but they are working with Live Nation to try to bring this technology mainstream. "The whole concept is to get rid of the piece of paper to get rid of the barcode and let your face be your ticket," Haskett says. Blink Identity hopes one day customers will be able to link their credit card and driver’s license to their account, so they can go wallet-free. 1724

It’s been nearly four decades since a Northern Ireland-based start-up car company put a futuristic take on the sports car. With its low profile, sleek, stainless steel body and unmistakable gull-wing doors, DeLorean’s DMC-12 remains one of the most recognizable cars on the planet. “You're going down the road and people are just hanging out their windows taking pictures and videotaping,” explains DMC-12 owner Robert Keslar.Keslar bought his second DeLorean with severe engine damage eight years ago.“There was some fiberglass damage from the fire that occurred,” he said. “So, I did all that myself and then I brought it up here to the shop and they finished it up for me and got it back on the road.”Only one model, in one color, was ever released before the company shutdown production in 1982. Its founder John DeLorean was in legal hot water and the original company was left insolvent.“It was a perfect storm,” said current DeLorean Motor Company Vice President James Espey. “A bad economy, high interest rates and a bad exchange rate on the pound to the dollar.”With just over 9,000 produced, an estimated 6500 remain on the road today.But it was 1985’s "Back to the Future" that electrified audiences, cementing the DeLorean’s place in American pop culture.In the film, an incredulous Marty McFly played by Michael J. Fox asks the question: “You built a time machine out of a DeLorean?”Doc Brown played by Christopher Lloyd responds with this: “The way I look at it, if you’re going to build a time machine you ought to do it with some style.”It’s that style and original design that’s been frozen in time. And the re-imagined DeLorean Motor Company remains on its quest to bring the iconic luxury car into the future. “We still have people who don't know that the company is still in existence,” says Espey. DMC is now headquartered just outside of Houston in Humble, Texas. They specialize in the service and restoration of DeLorean cars. They even hope to one day produce new ones.“When the Delorean factory closed in late ‘82, all the remaining parts got shipped here to the United States,” according to Espey.Their warehouse, now a time-capsule, is lined with original parts manufactured nearly 40 years ago. “About three and a half million altogether,” says Espey. “Nuts Bolts Washers glass interior trim switches stainless steel panels pretty much everything to make a car.”That’s enough parts, potentially to build another 500 cars. But DMC says new production is on hold for now. They are waiting for final federal regulations for a law passed in 2015 that would allow them to produce a low volume of vintage cars that would be exempt from today’s emission standards. “In a perfect world that would lead to an all new DeLorean at some point in the future," says Espey.Fortunately, enthusiasts like Keslar don’t have to wait for the future. “The doors the finish the stainless steel there's just nothing else like it,” says Keslar with a smile. “It’s an absolute blast.”A blast from the past. 3024

  

Julian Rai spends a lot of time in his car.“Currently, I’m a Lyft driver and I deliver for Grubhub, Postmates, and Doordash and Instacart,” Rai said.With the increasing demand for people to deliver your packages, good, and other items, it’s an industry constantly available with job opportunities, especially with the rise of delivery apps.“I can control my own time,” Rai said. “I can choose not to work if I don’t want to work that day.”“It’s becoming more and more lucrative,” HG Parsa, an economics professor at the University of Denver, said. “In the morning they do Uber. In the afternoon they go to groceries. In the evening they pick up children from school and hospital, then they go home.” He said the flexibility in this type of work can be attractive. But a job like this has its risks.“They do have contact with a lot of people,” Christina Huber, an economist at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, said. “They are really vulnerable. With the rise of coronavirus, it’ll be interesting to see how those industries evolve.”The growing number of COVID-19 cases has woken up the delivery industry to the potential threat.Postmates recently announced a “no contact” option, allowing app users to choose to have their food dropped off somewhere instead of meeting face to face. Rai said this is already happening.“Literally I’ve gotten one. I took a screenshot of this, that said ‘I have the flu, leave it outside the door’,” Rai said.“I think there’s a lot of fear about how the COVID-19 virus is gonna impact a lot of different industries,” Tsinni Russel, an owner and operator at Confluence Courier Collective, a local bike messenger company, said. “There's been a lot of talk about if it’s gonna increase delivery or decrease delivery kind of based on if people want to go out more.”He said one of the cons of working in the industry is the lack of benefits.“We also have independent contractors working for us, which is kind of the same as Postmates and Grubhub and all those other industries, and that’s just because due to the nature of the business. It’s very expensive to have employees,” Russell said.“You don’t have benefits, you don’t have healthcare, you don’t have paid time off, you don’t get sick leave,” Huber explained.Delivery workers are also exposed to the elements more frequently.“When it’s snowing outside or raining outside and people don’t want to leave their house, that’s probably when we get the busiest and make the most of our money,” Russell said.“Bad weather usually means good business for us,” Rai added.As the industry continues to grow, Huber said she sees the increasing demand from the consumer side for fast, convenient delivery.“I think we kind of reached this tipping point,” she said. “It was the smartphone's availability for the consumer and the ability for the producers to develop these apps that are so convenient for people, combined with these other large companies that got us used to the free shipping and home delivery.”Workers hope the industry -- and general understanding from customers -- will grow with it.“It’s important to remember that the people who are delivering your food,” Russell explained. “They’re just regular working class people who are just trying to make a living, so just treating everybody with respect is an important thing to do.” 3336

From malware, internet scams and phishing, it’s easy for anyone to get taken advantage of online. However, Vidoni says he’s not worried about privacy online.According to the Journal of Public Health, between 2 to 3 million seniors get scammed each year. A few years ago, that was Vidoni. Hackers took over his home screen and locked him out of his computer."They got into my computer, and in order to get it back, I had to pay them money,” Vidoni recalls. “And it was no small amount. It added up to about 0." His family still teases him for falling for the scam. But after taking classes and practicing keeping his identity private online, Vidoni learned the lesson the hard way.“Now, anytime someone is asking me for something that I'm not asking for, I just erase it," he says. 1322
