Republicans are reportedly seeking to extend increased unemployment benefits in the next round of COVID-19 stimulus, but at a much lower rate, according to The New York Times and The Washington Post.Both The Times and The Post report that Republican lawmakers are prepared to introduce a stimulus package that would continue increased unemployment insurance, but would reduce weekly aid from 0 a week to 0 a week.The 0 federal payments, put in place by the .2 trillion CARES Act that was passed in March, expired over the weekend.According to both The Times and The Post, the Republican plan would offer the 0 insurance for two months, during which time states would need to develop their own plans that would pay unemployed workers 70% of what they were making prior to the pandemic.Many Republicans argue that the 0 a week payments created an incentive for those unemployed to not work, arguing that many were receiving more in unemployment insurance than they would if working.Democrats favor extending the 0 payments through the end of the year with the HEROES Act — a stimulus package that passed through the House in May. Puppies being rescued in Seattle quickly became rescuers for panicking airline passengers. The dogs were on the way to Detroit when an airline employee stole a plane at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, resulting in the delay of several outbound flights. A Michigan volunteer was stuck at the airport with the nine puppies, which brought peace to a chaotic situation.“We knew something was happening at the airport, we didn’t really know,” said Steve Heim, a Detroit Metro Airport employee. Heim volunteers with an animal rescue and was in Seattle Friday to bring nine Spanish greyhound puppies to metro Detroit. He was taking a red-eye and quickly realized something was wrong at the airport. An airline employee had stolen a plane on what officials say was a suicide mission. “I said ‘uh-oh this is not good,’” Heim said. He knew his flight and many other flights would be delayed due to the incident. But he was traveling alone, caring for nine puppies at the airport, waiting for the next flight which was more than six hours later. “People were yelling and screaming at all the customer service agents," Heim said. "People were crying. RANCHO SANTA FE (CNS) - Authorities Friday were searching for a driver who fled after crashing a Ferrari into a power pole in Rancho Santa Fe, knocking out electricity to 84 customers in the area.The crash, involving a 2012 Ferrari, was reported shortly before 10:20 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Avenida de Acacias and La Granada, California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said.The crash caused the 40-foot power pole to fall to the ground, leaving 84 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in the area in the dark, SDG&E spokesman Wes Jones said.As of 8:30 this morning, electricity had been restored to all but three customers, who were expected to be back on line by noon, Jones said.The northbound and southbound lanes of Avenida De Acacias were expected to be closed from La Granada to Via De La Cumbre until around 3 p.m. while crews worked to replace the power pole. 903
