SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Starting this fall, the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine is offering the first-ever certificate program specializing in medical marijuana.The three-semester class promises to teach health care professionals the basics of medical cannabis, so they can begin to use it in their practice."We thought it was important for health care professionals to have objective information about medical marijuana," says school President Jack Miller.Miller says part of the program's purpose is to help dispel some of the myths surrounding medical marijuana."There's a lot of misinformation," Miller says. "If CBD worked for everything that people said it worked for, we wouldn't need another medicine. It seems like the claims are that it will help everything. But really a lot more research needs to be done."Across town, that research is happening. UC San Diego's Center for Medical Cannabis Research has been studying the benefits of the drug since 2000."It's clear from our research and other people's work that there are some medicinal properties to compounds within marijuana," says CMCR Director Dr. Igor Grant.But, Grant cautions that it still may be too soon to have a degree program focused on medical marijuana."There are some things we know, but a lot of things we don't," he says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Scripps Health revealed Tuesday plans for major new construction projects and buildings at its hospitals in San Diego County.The master plan includes flexible design spaces for evolving technology in patient rooms, operating rooms, laboratories and diagnostic centers, Scripps officials said.More care will be delivered on an outpatient basis at clinics and other facilities so Scripps can use acute care hospitals to care for the most seriously ill patients, said the company."This is our vision to build the health care system of the future - starting today," said Scripps president and CEO Chris van Gorder. "Our focus is on delivering the right care in the right setting that reflects the changing health care needs of the communities we serve across the San Diego region."The projects will be financed by operating revenues, borrowing and philanthropy, Scripps said.Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla:Construction includes a new seven-story, 401,000 square-foot hospital tower. It will feature a woman's health center, nursery, and neonatal ICU. The building should be finished in 2024.Scripps Mercy Chula Vista, Scripps Green Hospitals:The facilities will undergo seismic retrofitting. The work will start in 2022 in Chula Vista and 2027 at Scripps Green.Scripps Mercy San Diego:The campus will be the largest project for the health care system. The existing acute care building will be replaced with a new 710,000 square-foot 15-story tower. Most of the rooms will be private. The central energy plant will also be upgraded. Construction will start in 2022 and end in 2027.Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas:Plans include a new 185,000 square-foot three-story acute care building, a new medical office building, seismic retrofitting and energy plant upgrades. The work will be finished in 2024.Other projects:Construction includes two new Scripps MD Anderson outpatient cancer centers at Scripps Mercy San Diego and Scripps Radiation Therapy Center in La Jolla. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's love for giant pandas has been a 30-year commitment.Since 1987, when the zoo hosted two pandas (Basi and Yuan Yuan) for 200 days, San Diego has been enthralled with the giant black-and-white bears.What would eventually follow would be a 12-year partnership with China's Wolong Panda Preserve to support research and conservation of the animal — and a local appetite as big as a panda's to see the animal up close.RELATED: San Diego Zoo to send pandas Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu to ChinaThe zoo's first two pandas, Bai Yun and Shi Shi, arrived in 1996. She would be given to Wolong Giant Panda Conservation Center in China, per the conservation agreement, in February 2004. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University canceled spring break 2021 on Tuesday night, citing concerns of rising COVID-19 cases. Instead of the traditional nine day break, students will get four "rest and recovery days" scattered throughout the semester. The days will create multiple long weekends for students and faculty. The decision was made during a University Senate meeting. The vote was 44 to 28. The school senate is made up of faculty, staff and student representatives. Within hours of the decision, an online petition gained thousands of signatures from students asking for the school to bring back spring break. In a lengthy email sent to the entire campus, school officials explained the decision was made in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19,citing health and safety as the schools top priority. Officials say the rest and recovery days are for no instruction, assignments, deadlines or exams.
