It's a stark look inside some of the nation's public housing: Crumbling Walls, water-damaged ceilings and floors lines with mouse traps."It's just disgusting how we have to live," says Patricia Bishop, who lives at a public housing property in Washington, D.C.For 14 years, she says she has steadily seen conditions get worse." The mold, the rats, the mildew. ... It is just filthy and disgusting. We're humans but we're being treated like trash," she said.In some cases, conditions are so bad residents are being forced to leave. Mold drove out people who lived in that same property." When you don't have enough money, all you can do is move forward with band aid approaches," said Tyrone Garrett, who oversees public housing in DC.The federal government has cut funding in the past 10 years, he says, making conditions worse."I wouldn't want a family member of mine — my mother, my brother, my sister, my father or my grandmother living in conditions like this," he said. "Any more drastic cut to what we're doing and they'll be major impacts to our families — more than what we've seen here today."The White House argues a different approach is needed. The Trump administration says tax breaks will motivate private developers to help renovate these properties and invest in low-income communities."Our actions will directly improve the lives of countless low-income Americans, it's pretty much aimed at that," President Donald Trump has said. While some agree that public-private partnerships can help, the concern is it will take years to see the benefits."We can't revitalize 2600 units, even if we use private capital in any way shape or form quickly. It won't happen within a year," Garrett said.Any proposal will need the approval of Congress, and members of the President's own party have expressed concerns with parts of the plan. 1853

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — School officials at Blue Valley School District in Kansas say they are having a problem with students vaping at school. The problem is so severe that school officials are calling it an "epidemic." "Students have been caught vaping in classes, in our hallways, in our bathrooms," said David Stubblefield, Blue Valley's executive director of school administration. "Kids have come to us and said they cannot sit through an entire class without vaping." According to the school district, vaping usage has increased among students in high school year after year. The district has also seen students vaping in middle school. Every day, principals are dealing with some problem involving vaping, Stubblefield said. "A lot of times there’s not a long-lasting smell to it and the vape can dissipate very quickly. They are so easily concealable because they look like normal, everyday devices, like a USB," Stubblefield said. To combat vaping, the school district is focusing on education. Tuesday night, the district hosted an open house for parents and students to learn about potential health risks associated with vaping. The district also changed 1175

In a feat of engineering, human will and blatant disregard of speed limits, three men claim that they broke the record for the "Cannonball Run," a cross-country drive from New York to Los Angeles.Arne Toman, Douglas Tabbutt and Berkeley Chadwick say they started their drive on November 11 at 12:57 a.m. at the Red Ball Garage in Manhattan and ended at the Portofino hotel in Redondo Beach in 27 hours and 25 minutes, beating the previous record of 28 hours and 50 minutes."Holding the 'Cannonball' record is a lifelong dream of mine," Toman, one of the drivers, told CNN. "I have no intentions of trying to do it again. We had perfect weather, traffic, no construction, etc. I don't think you could recreate that or the good luck we had without having police interactions."Road & Track first reported the accomplishment in the unofficial and illicit event. The trio claims their average speed was 103 miles per hour, and the highest was 193.They drove in a "heavily prepared" Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Upgrades to the exhaust and the engine's two turbochargers produced more than 800 horsepower, a press release said.It took "every navigational aid and police counter-measure known to man" and almost 20 different scouts to avoid police interference, they said. Technology included Waze, radar detectors, a CB radio, binoculars and an airplane detection system. They had no interactions with police during the drive, Toman said.Ed Bolian, who was 1460

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana health officials confirmed Friday a case of COVID-19 in Indianapolis.Gov. Eric Holcomb has declared a public health emergency in Indiana. The patient is an adult male who recently traveled to Boston for an event, Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina Box said. The man called ahead to the health department and entered Community North Hospital through a side door with health professionals. His contact with others was minimal to none, Community Health Network Physician Dr. Ram Yeleti said. The patient is now in self-isolation and was only at the hospital from about 11:30 p.m. Thursday to 2:30 a.m. Friday.Twelve people have been tested, and another 35 are being monitored for the virus, Box said. What is coronavirus, COVID-19?According to the World Health Organization, coronaviruses are "a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).A novel coronavirus, such as COVID-19, is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.COVID-19 was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and has now been detected in 37 locations across the globe, including in the U.S., according to the CDC.The CDC reports the initial patients in China has some link to a large seafood and live animal market, indicative of animal-to-person spread. A growing number of patients, however, did not report exposure to animal markets, indicating the disease is spreading person-to-person.What are the symptoms? How does it spread?Confirmed cases of COVID-19 have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death, according to the CDC. Symptoms can include fever, cough, shortness of breath. The CDC said symptoms may appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 days after exposure. It is similar to the incubation period for MERS.Spread of the virus is thought to be mainly from person-to-person. Spread is between people who are in close contact with one another (within about six feet). Spread occurs via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The droplets can land in the mouths of noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.According to the CDC, it may be possible for a person to get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose or possibly their eyes. This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, the CDC said. The disease is most contagious when people are the sickest and showing the most symptoms. 2661
