Homeowners in City Heights say the neighborhood isn't keeping up with the cost of living. While home prices are on the rise, development plans have come to a halt. Paul Smith is trying to transform City Heights. "They're still equating it to a high crime area or a place not worth investing in," said Smith. Like everywhere else in San Diego, the cost of living there is going up. "People are taking advantage of a housing shortage right now," said Smith. "So they can demand top dollar for their house. Because someone's willing to pay for it."He's been remodeling his home for the past 18 months. Many of his neighbors are doing the same. "We're seeing numbers in the 0's range now, 0, and I'd say probably five years ago you could buy a house for under 0,000."But, he says businesses in the area aren't adapting to the change. "It's constantly having to go over to North Park to look for services or South Park, outside the community."While some shops are moving in, he says it's simply not enough. "New businesses are seeming to move in, but there isn't a massive influx of investments like you're seeing in North Park and other areas," said Smith. "So we're seeing a lot of vacancies here."Those businesses would help build an even stronger community. "I don't always want to have to leave my neighborhood and to another area just to go get groceries, or go to a restaurant to eat," said Smith. For him, it can't come soon enough. "Change kind of is coming, but more needs to happen."The city did work on a redevelopment project in City Heights several years ago. There are currently no plans for future projects in the area on the city's website.  1735

Greenland's massive ice sheets contain enough water to raise global sea levels by 23 feet, and a new study shows that they are melting at a rate "unprecedented" over centuries -- and likely thousands of years. The study, published Thursday in the scientific journal Nature, found that Greenland's ice loss accelerated rapidly in the past two decades after remaining relatively stable since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-1800s.Today, Greenland's ice sheets are melting at a rate 50% higher than pre-industrial levels and 33% above 20th-century levels, the scientists found.Greenland's melting glaciers may someday flood your city"What we were able to show is that the melting that Greenland is experiencing today is really unprecedented and off the charts in the longer-term context," said Sarah Das, an associate scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and a co-author of the study. To determine just how fast Greenland's ice is retreating compared with the past, scientists used a drill the size of a traffic light pole to take ice core samples. The samples were taken from sites more than 6,000 feet above sea level, giving the researchers a window into melting on the ice sheet over the past several centuries. In the wake of October's dire report from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warning that civilization has just more than a decade to stave off climate catastrophe, Thursday's report spells more bad news for the planet, especially the millions of people living near the world's oceans.Melting from Greenland's ice sheet is the largest single driver of global sea level rise, which scientists predict could swamp coastal cities and settlements in the coming decades.Eight of the 10 largest cities in the world are near coasts, and 40% to 50% of the global population lives in coastal areas vulnerable to rising seas. The study also found that Greenland's ice loss is driven primarily by warmer summer air and that even small rises in temperature can trigger exponential increases in the ice's melt rate."As the atmosphere continues to warm, melting will outpace that warming and continue to accelerate," said Luke Trusel, an assistant professor at Rowan University and study co-author.According to Trusel, the current thought in the scientific community is that there is a temperature threshold that could trigger a point of no return for the eventual melting of Greenland and Antarctica's ice sheets. And though we don't know exactly what that temperature tipping point is, "what's clear is that the more we warm, the more ice melts.""Once the ice sheets reach these tipping points, it's thought that they'll go into a state of irreversible retreat, so they'll be responding to what we do now for centuries and milliennia into the future," Trusel said. What it's like at the ground zero of climate changeDas stressed that although climate science often focuses on the future impacts of warming, the findings show that the climate is already undergoing hugely significant changes."Climate change -- whether it's in Greenland or in your backyard -- is already here and already happening and already impacting people. It's not something that's coming in the future, and this study really drives home that point," she said.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. Having a full kitchen of healthy foods is becoming a luxury. Food pantries across the country are still seeing a dramatic increase in need.“I hope that we eventually get this thing under control, so we can wean everyone off the need for food pantries and shelters like ours, because this is not sustainable,” said Kim Guadagno, CEO of Fulfill, a New Jersey food bank.Guadagno says her organization has seen an increase in demand of almost 2.5 million meals compared to this time last year.Feeding America says at the peak in April, there was a 70% increase in demand, and it’s sustained around 60% higher. Many food banks say they're seeing many families for the first time.“You can always tell someone who has never been to a food pantry before. They come literally right up to this building in tears, because they’ve never had to ask for help before and it’s crushing to all of us,” said Guadagno.Feeding America expects that increased need will continue during the holidays, which is an important time for food banks.“We see increased awareness around hunger and food insecurity around the holidays. It’s a great time for food banks to fundraise. A lot of that fundraising helps sustain them throughout the year,” said Zuani Villarreal, Director of Communications at Feeding America.Food banks are having to purchase more product because of supply chain disruptions. They say right now, cash donations are critical for that and to purchase new supplies like PPE. 1471

From Parkland to Pittsburgh, we all realize that these days a mass shooting can happen anywhere, at any time.If a shooter walked into your workplace, whether an office building, a school or a movie theater, would you know how to survive? They're words too many people have heard: "We have an active shooter. Stand by for further information."Jim Hardman is a Desert Storm US Army veteran and a former police officer who teaches survival classes. In an active shooting, he says everyone should know three keywords: run, hide, fight.First: Run.Hardman says wherever you are, always know where the exit is."I walk into a store or a new business," he said, "and ask myself where can I get out?"Hear gunshots? Hardman says run if you can, without running into gunfire."If I decide to run, I move with a purpose," he said. "I'm not just running through the center or a room to try to get away."Second: Hide.Hardman says to look for a spot that might stop bullets."I position myself to where I've got that filing cabinet, that copier, something that's heavy."Hardman says never try to reason with someone already shooting. Statistics show you cannot stop him at that point."Once that active killing starts, that rationalization is out the door."Obviously, your best bet is to escape. But if you can't get out, Hardman says the next thing to do is to start barricading the room you're in, putting heavy everything at the door to keep the shooter out."I might just grab an entire desk assembly, slide it over in front of the door, " he said. 1553
