SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sign advertising a block party at the home of a registered sex offender is causing concern in Rancho Bernardo.“We would like to invite you and your kids to a neighborhood get together” read the sign, which was posted outside a home on Bernardo Oaks Drive in the Seven Oaks retirement neighborhood this week.“I always keep an eye on that house because I know there’s a registered sex offender that lives there,” said Susan Sutherland.Sutherland told 10News she looked up her community on the Megan’s Law website four years ago and found a listing for a neighbor who had had been convicted of lewd acts on a child under 14, according to Sutherland“I come from a background of abuse. I can’t live with myself if I allow a child to get hurt. I can’t live with that,” Sutherland said. The sign was posted by the contractor who recently renovated the home, which is owned by the man's mother. 10News reached out to Elor Energy, which said it had no prior knowledge of the man's past. The company canceled the event and removed the sign. 1073

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Accusations of altering documents to receive federal money. That’s the claim in court records against Argosy University, which operates The Art Institute of California in San Diego. Court documents accuse the university of charges including changing submissions to the Department of Education to get student financial funds. Argosy University operates more than a dozen locations across the country, including the Art Institute of California in Mission Valley. The Department of Education sent millions of dollars to Argosy. RELATED: Students concerned for future of Art Institute of California - San DiegoWhat it didn’t know and what’s alleged in court documents is the university was using the money that was supposed to go to students to pay for things like operating expenses. The filing was made on behalf of a court-appointed receiver, the independent outside party to handle the university’s finances. 10News reported earlier that the Education Department stopped all financial aid to Argosy. In July of 2018, the Art Institute in Mission Valley stopped enrolling new students. Current students say they’re frustrated and nervous. 10News reached out to Argosy’s parent company for a response but hasn’t heard back. 1250

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Encinitas student beat out thousands of kids across the country to be named a co-champion in a national history trivia contest. He also uses history to teach kids about COVID-19.Quade Kelley, 11, produces different videos imagining what it would be like for historical figures, like Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin, in today’s world. In his videos, the student is telling others “about COVID and what we could do to have the cases go down."In one of his videos, he received the surprise of a lifetime when he found out he was a finalist in the Inaugural “Who Was?” History Bee. Kelley beat out 25,000 kids across the U.S.The student has read nearly 190 books about public and historical figures, over 250 biographies, and spent more than 300 hours studying.“Because of COVID, they canceled New York. It's sort of disappointing, but at least I had an amazing opportunity to be a co-champion," Kelley said. The winners of the contest split ,000. Kelley donated his portion to a local charity.Despite not being able to compete in the history bee Kelly was able to meet the other finalist via Zoom and his favorite author Jeff Kinney.Kelly says he has a passion for history.“It’s important to learn history because if we don’t learn about it, it will happen again, possibly,” says Kelley. “We can learn from the good things that will happen again.” 1381

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Americans are spending more and more time commuting for every day while others aren’t commuting at all, according to a new report. The report, released Thursday by Apartment List, claims that the number of “super commuters,” people who travel more than 90 minutes to work each way, has increased by more than 31 percent since 2005. In the same time frame, the number of Americans working from home has increased by 76 percent, according to the report. RELATED: San Diegans lost dozens of hours in 2018 due to traffic congestionIn San Diego, nearly 26,000 people are considered super commuters, totaling 2.1 percent of the population. Another California city, Stockton, pulled ahead of all other metros in the U.S. with more than 11 percent of its population considered super commuters. Apartment List says the cheaper cost of living when compared to the San Francisco Bay Area is a contributing factor. While the share of super commuters in San Diego may be modest, some people have decided not to commute at all. RELATED: Circulate San Diego details how South Bay can end traffic deathsMore than 6 percent of San Diego residents, or a little more than 78,000 people, work from home, the report claims. Apartment List says creative and technical jobs lead the working from home charge. The list includes arts, design, entertainment, sports and media. Despite long commutes, there may be some good news. The report claims that those who work from home may enjoy higher earnings because they typically live in high-wage metros.
