CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A woman narrowly avoided being hit by a falling tree branch on a busy Chula Vista street Wednesday. A large branch fell from the eucalyptus tree along Telegraph Canyon Road about 3 p.m., crashing through the passenger side window of a woman’s car. Had a passenger been in the seat, the person would have been impaled, crews on the scene estimated. The woman pulled into the bike lane to assess the damage. She was able to walk independently but paramedics took her to the hospital for an assessment. No other cars were damaged, officials said. A neighbor told 10News they have seen other branches fall from the same tree. No one has been injured by the other incidents. 706

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Four people were displaced when a fire damaged their South Bay home Sunday morning, authorities said.Dispatchers were alerted at about 9:20 a.m. to a fire at a house near the intersection of Madden and Donax avenues, according to the San Diego Police Department. The area is just west of Beyer Boulevard.Firefighters found a small fire in the attic, and were able to get everyone out of the house and extinguish the flames, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department official said. The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known. The Red Cross was called to assist with finding shelter for the home's occupants, the Fire-Rescue official said. 662

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Homeowners in Eastlake are frustrated with a plan to develop a storage facility near their homes. The proposed location is in an empty space between Eastlake High School and Antigua, a gated community of townhomes. The facility would be a recreational storage facility, for boats, cars and containers. The City of Chula Vista's planning department would have to approve the proposal. Homeowners are hoping they don't. Neighbors like Carmen Bermen say the plans are going to lower their property values and attract the wrong crowd. On Saturday, they started posting warning flyers around their community to warn other neighbors. Bermen was the first homeowner to notice the plans. She says the city had sent out two notices in 2016. The last notice arrived on Thanksgiving week. 10News obtained a copy of that notice letting homeowners know they had until November 26th to send in any written comments or petitions. The vote would take place on November 27th. After emailing the city, residents say officials told them they'd have a public hearing in January on the issue, instead of voting on it in closed session. 10News reached out to the city for comment on this issue, a spokesperson told us it's up to the planning department to put the item on the agenda for the community to go and express their concerns during public comment. CINCINNATI — Matt Moeddel worked tirelessly to comfort and care for his COVID-19 patients, insisting on staying by their sides as they battled a disease so contagious and deadly that most patients who die from it must do so alone. The 43-year-old nurse wouldn't let that happen and held his patients' hands for as long as he could -- until he became infected with COVID-19 himself.His former patients still send his family thank you letters."He wouldn't let somebody die without somebody there with them," said Bethany Moeddel, Matt's sister.Matt was the director of nursing at Bridgeway Pointe in Arlington Heights, Ohio, and won awards for the job he did. For Bethany Moeddel, he was a big brother, the middle child and her Reds game day partner. She said he dreamed of one day buying a cabin in the Smoky Mountains."All he worried about was 'my patients, I need to be there, I need to take care of them,'" said Bethany.He'd just adopted a dog, Wilson, and was settling into his new townhouse when COVID-19 began infecting his patients."He said, 'nobody wants to die without having like a human contact or somebody there,'" said Bethany. "So he would go into the rooms and hold their hands."By May, Matt tested positive for COVID-19 and his Type 2 diabetes made him vulnerable to complications from the illness. Bethany said she suggested her brother go to the hospital, but he hesitated, reluctant to leave his dog alone.Then, 21 days later, family found Matt dead in his home."He was sitting on the stairs with his shoes on and his keys in his pocket," said Bethany. (KGTV) — Chula Vista Girl Scout Ana De Almeida Amaral was recently given the National Gold Award, the Girl Scouts' top honor, for her work combating racism in education, according to the organization.“In a time when an increasing number of young people are using their voices to come together and take action, these girls stand out," said GSUSA CEO Sylvia Acevedo. Nine other girl scouts received the honor as well. "They have made an incredible impact in the worlds of STEM, education, agriculture, the environment, civil rights, and beyond."Amaral was recognized for creating the first ethnic studies course at High Tech High School. She developed the course to serve the school's large population of students of color. "Through my first years of high school I saw that the representation of people of color wasn't apparent in our curriculum, in our history classes, or our school clubs," Amaral, now a senior, says. Amaral ran seminars for peers that would lead the course, covering culturally responsive teaching and how to include diverse perspectives in lessons.But Amaral says her project goes deeper than her course. She says the course is really a way to address institutional racism in education and help students bridge that educational gap."Although it's not that our educators today believe those ideas, but it's just the way our education system was founded," Amaral said. "For ethnic studies to be a place for students to share their identities, be connected with one another, and have the resources to feel empowered by their education means students are engaged with school, students are graduating high school, and students are going to college."The class is an elective, student-led course that runs during school hours, focusing on historical oppression, marginalized groups, and cultures. Lessons teach students how to identify injustice historically and in their own lives while empowering them to change it."It's been running for two years.
