BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Sunday China will strive to make balanced international payment and promote free trade, although protectionism worsens as the global financial crisis deepens."I am a staunch supporter of free trade, since it will not only promote world economic growth, but also improve people's livelihoods," Wen made the remarks at a press conference after the close of the annual parliament session."We will launch new measures to increase imports. We sent purchasing groups to the European Union and the United States when the world was stranded in the most difficult period of time (in the global financial crisis)." he said.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao smiles during a press conference after the closing meeting of the Third Session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, March 14, 2010He said the worsening protectionism amid the world economic slump deserves alerts of all countries."Some countries' moves to shore up exports are understandable. But what I can not understand is they devaluate their own currencies while on the contrary pushing for the appreciation of others' currencies. I think it is protectionism," he said.Wen also said he hopes the United States and European Union recognize China's market economy status, and lift ban on hi-tech exports to China.

MUNICh, Germany, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Speaking highly of the deepening China-Europe relations over the past decades, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Friday told the Munich Security Conference that a brighter future of bilateral ties calls on both sides to embrace an open and inclusive spirit. With this year marking the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union, the Chinese top diplomat said China and the EU have established "a comprehensive strategic partnership that is all-dimensional, wide-ranging and multi-tiered" and the changing world "has brought China-EU relations to a new historical starting point.""To achieve a brighter future (of China-EU relations), we must manage our relations from a strategic and long-term perspective," Yang said. "We must respect each other, treat each other as equals, and accommodate each other's core interests and major concerns."He also expressed the hope that Europe will see China "in a more objective and sensible light" and recognize that China's development is not a challenge but an opportunity."We do not expect China and Europe to see eye to eye on each and every issue, and we need not be afraid of our differences," he added."As long as we both embrace an open and inclusive spirit, we will have more consensus than differences and more mutual benefits than frictions, and cooperation will be the defining theme of China-EU relations," Yang said.As to the host country of the security conference, Yang said " China-Germany ties have maintained dynamic growth.""In the face of the complex international situation and various grave challenges, China and Germany must bear in mind the larger and long-term interests and further enhance mutual trust and cooperation," he said, adding that China is ready to join Germany "in a common effort to elevate our partnership of global responsibility to a higher level."It was the first appearance of a Chinese foreign minister in the Munich Security Conference's 46-year history.

Fischer arrived here Tuesday noon for a four-day state visit to China.Fischer echoed Hu's views, saying China had become an important cooperation partner of Austria.Fischer said Austria was satisfied with ties with China, as bilateral trade increased steadily last year despite the international financial crisis.China-Austria trade hit 4.33 billion U.S. dollars from January to November in 2009, according to China's Customs. This was Fischer's first state visit to China since he took office in July 2004.Fischer's entourage included more than 60 officials in health, defense, sports, business, commerce, banking, among others, and around 120 business executives.Fischer expressed condolences over the death of eight Chinese peacekeeping police officers in a 7.3-magnitude earthquake in Haiti last week. Their bodies were returned to Beijing Tuesday.Hu called the eight peacekeepers "excellent children of Chinese nation and loyal guards of world peace," and said Chinese people felt grieved about their suffering.Though China and Haiti have not established diplomatic relations, China dispatched an international rescue team to the Caribbean nation and offered emergency reliefs and funds, Hu said."China would work with the international community to support Haiti's relief efforts and post-quake reconstruction," Hu said.Hu appreciated the Austrian government's adherence to the one-China policy and commitment to developing positive ties with China.Looking to the future, Hu proposed both leadership maintain close contacts, governments and legislatures expand communication in a bid to deepen political trust. On the economic front, Hu said both countries should make use of their own advantages and expand cooperation. BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- China defended its move to reduce its holdings of U.S. Treasury securities, saying the United States should take steps to promote confidence in U.S. dollar .Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang made the comment Thursday when responding to questions on China's sale of U.S. Treasury securities last December.Qin said the issue should be viewed from two perspectives. He said on the one hand, China always followed the principle of "ensuring safety, liquidity and good value" in managing its foreign exchange reserve. And when it came to how much and when China buys the bonds, the decision should be made taking into account the market and China's need, so as to realize rational deployment of China's foreign exchange property, he said. And on the other hand, the United States should take concrete steps to beef up the international market's confidence in the U.S. dollar, Qin said. The way to view the issue was similar to doing business, he said.China trimmed its holdings of U.S. debt by 34.2 billion U.S. dollars in December 2009, leaving Japan the largest holder of U.S. Treasury securities, the U.S. Treasury Department reported on Feb. 16.As of the end of November last year, China held 789.6 billion U.S. dollars of U.S. Treasury bonds.
