A Guatemalan father is suing two nonprofits that house migrant children for the US government, alleging his 10-year-old son was forced to take psychotropic drugs and sexually assaulted while in custody. The father and son, identified in the lawsuit as J.E.B. and F.C.B., allege that US officials forcibly separated them at the border in February 2018. From there, according to the lawsuit, F.C.B. was first placed in the custody of a migrant shelter run by Southwest Key in Arizona, then later transferred to the Shiloh Treatment Center in Manvel, Texas. The lawsuit alleges that both facilities "acted with fraud, malice and gross neglect" and that staff at both facilities physically assaulted F.C.B. At the Texas facility, the lawsuit alleges the boy "was dosed with powerful psychotropic drugs without parental consent." He was also sexually assaulted by another detained child during the last few weeks of his time in custody at Shiloh, the suit says. Both the boy and his father were deported last year, according to the lawsuit, which seeks damages for the pain, emotional distress and medical expenses they've allegedly suffered. 1146

A California rapid transit employee is being hailed as a hero for rescuing a man who fell onto the tracks as a train was approaching the platform. The dramatic rescue happened at the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) station at the Oakland Coliseum after an NFL game Sunday between the Oakland Raiders and the Detroit Lions.Tony Badilla, a passenger who witnessed the episode, posted a video on Twitter of the two men hugging in the aftermath. He told CNN the employee, identified as John O'Connor, was very attentive in keeping the crowd back from the tracks while helping riders find their train line."As the train approached, I sat up from my seat and the crowd turned their attention to the train," he said. "I heard a commotion to my left just as the train arrived and witnessed the BART worker physically bring the man to the ground, both falling to the deck safely as the train breezed by."The crowd was shocked at just how close of a call it was, and the man was rattled," Badilla said. "The BART worker was upset with the man for being so careless, but his emotions took over and the two embraced."According to a statement from BART, the unidentified man was intoxicated and accidentally fell onto the tracks. In a tweet, BART thanked O'Connor for his heroism. "He saved a life tonight. Thank you John. Show him some love," the tweet read.O'Connor, a former train operator promoted to transportation supervisor, has worked at BART for 24 years, according to the transit agency."John was on the platform and ensuring everyone stayed away from the yellow safety strip," a BART spokeswoman told CNN in a statement. "A male who was intoxicated accidentally mis-stepped and fell into the trackway while a train was approaching. John saw this along with other riders and yelled at the man to get back onto the platform. The male didn't move quick enough so John grabbed him by the shoulders and pulled him up by rolling him over his body to safety. They stood up and hugged."O'Connor told 1998

The Senate Finance Committee put big pharmaceutical companies on blast for their sky-high drug prices. Seven drug executives were grilled in a heated exchange with lawmakers, who were questioning their pricing practices. Pharmaceutical company Pfizer has raised the price of the popular diabetes drug Lyrica by 163 percent since 2012. Each of the pharmaceutical companies insisted the high costs is because it takes a lot of money to research and develop better more effective drugs. The Senate committee did not agree. The Big Pharma panel did offer ideas to find solutions to lower drug prices, including passing rebates. Additionally, Merck, as well as the majority of the panel, say they support the stop of price hikes on medicines that have no competition and encourages competition elsewhere. However, Senate members like Maria Cantwell of Washington, say Big Pharma says it wants to solve the issue, but ultimately didn't offer anything worthy to create change. "I think if you guys can't agree that these basic market functions that allow people to buy in bulk or on discount is good ideas for consumers, then I don't think we are going to come up with anything we agree on here,” Cantwell said during the hearing.Lawmakers, including some of those on the Senate Finance Committee, receive funds every year from the pharmaceutical industry. The Center for Responsive Politics found drug companies spent more than 0 million lobbying last year. More can be found on the group’s website opensecrets.org. 1531
