With the COVID-19 pandemic creating a demand for homes across the country, housing prices are on the rise.The median price for a single-family home increased to more than 3,000 between July and September, a figure that's increased 12% in the last year.According to Danielle Hale, the Chief Economist at Realtor.com, housing prices increase when there are a large number of buyers and not a lot of homes for sale."With the pandemic, we've actually seen these trends be exacerbated," Hale said. "We have even more buyers in the market, as people are looking for more space and possibly to get out of crowded apartments and into a single-family home where they've got a yard and some outdoor space and room to live and work and play all at home."Hale says prices are up because there aren't enough new homes under construction — a possible overcorrection from the housing market crash 12 years ago when there was more construction than was needed, and the loan market went without the regulation in place today.Hale says that home prices are now rising in a way that could eventually impact affordability."Home prices are rising, but this pace of increase may not be sustainable, especially if mortgage rates steady or start to rise," she said. "The important thing to think about is that regardless of the macro-economic context, you want to look at your personal financial situation."Experts say the best way to become immune to a housing bubble is for buyers to make sure their financial situation can handle monthly mortgage payments long-term, even in the event of job loss. 1587

at a Colorado nursing home, but the facility is defending its reputation.Miaya Ramirez only worked for University Heights Rehab & Care a few months but what she saw will stay with her much longer. “Patients being neglected, not getting showers, not getting fed properly, being left in their room, unsanitary conditions, being left in soiled briefs,” Ramirez explained to KMGH. The week after she started working, Ramirez says the Director of Nursing asked her to lie on a state report about being understaffed. “We had holes in the staffing book and the DON (Director of Nursing) asked me to fill in people's names in the staffing book and I told her I didn’t feel comfortable doing that,” she said. Ramirez says she was suspended and ultimately fired for trying to care for patients not being helped by nursing staff. She says the doctor of one patient even called police about the neglect. “When the doctor pulled the bandages off she couldn't believe what she saw; she said the wounds were worse,” Ramirez said. “She asked if the dressings were being changed when they were supposed to, if the resident was getting up out of bed when she was supposed to and I told her 'no,'” Ramirez said. Ultimately, Ramirez was fired for putting a clean bandage on that patient. She shared recordings of her termination. University Heights said she was operating out of the scope of care. “What they told me was I should have left the dirty bandage on her backside,” Ramirez said. Operated by Vivage, University Heights says Ramirez is a disgruntled employee and her claims are unsubstantiated. “We are truly a very compassionate organization with a lot of experience. With the 20th anniversary of 9/11 coming up next year, the children of 9/11 first responders are coming together to share their stories for the first time in a new book due out next year."Even though we all experienced the day, we wall experienced it differently," said Susan Fiorentino, daughter of NYPD Retired Detective Pete Fiorentino, who responded to the World Trade Center attacks. "I was 10," said Susan, now 29 years old. It was Fiorentino's idea and she is leading the project to collect stories. "It’s important to raise awareness this is still a community that is suffering and we need to support them."So far, she has gathered 50 stories, including her own. She says the experience of 9/11 has influenced her and so many other 9/11 children to lead a life of service."I had a lot of people who said because my father because my mother was a first responder, that is what made me get into the first responder field," she said.She is still looking to collect more stories about how the children of 9/11 responders saw their childhood and now adulthood impacted by the day, documenting history through the eyes of some who have never told their stories before."Through connecting with others in my own experience in getting help with being a 9/11 first responder child has helped me so I hope it would help others as well," she said.The book will be published next summer.
