The Mid-American Conference Basketball Tournament in Cleveland will not be open to the general public due to concerns about the coronavirus. Officials said the tournament will continue as scheduled from Wednesday through Saturday. However, only credentialed institutional personnel, student-athlete family members, credentialed media crews, and official team party members will be allowed to attend games. “The safety of all is our greatest concern. Since January, I have stated that any decision would follow the advice of state governmental officials and medical professionals. Following the feedback we received today we have taken this action which is in alignment with the recommendation of Governor DeWine,” said Mid-American Conference Commissioner, Dr. Jon Steinbrecher. The University of Akron has decided to cancel their pre-game rally at Pizza 216. “We fully support the health concerns and recommendations outline by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine today,” Zips’ Director of Athletics Larry Williams said. “At the same time, it is hard to describe how disappointed we are that all of our wonderful alumni, supporters and fans are not going to be able to attend this special event in person. And, it is so very disappointing the student athletes will not be able to enjoy the passion reflected by the raucous crowds that always come out to support their Zips. Fortunately, there will be great television coverage for each game.”All tickets will be refunded in the form of a ticket to next year's tournament or a full refund. Fans can call their respective athletic departments or Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse at 216-420-2200. 1640
The 12 people killed in a mass shooting and gunbattle at a Southern California country-western bar a year ago have been remembered in a public park memorial called The Healing Garden. The garden was dedicated Thursday, the anniversary of the Borderline Bar & Grill shooting in Thousand Oaks, with a private ceremony for relatives of the dead, then an event for 248 survivors before the public opening at midafternoon.Late on Nov. 7, 2018, a gunman entered the popular bar and killed 11 people.Ventura County sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus was wounded by the gunman and then accidentally killed by a California Highway Patrol officer during the ensuing gunbattle. The gunman, 28-year-old Ian David Long, killed himself. The violence was part of a season of tragedy in California: The next morning a raging wildfire killed 85 people as it ravaged the northern town of Paradise and two other fires erupted near Thousand Oaks, one of which destroyed more than 1,600 structures and killed three people as it roared through Ventura and Los Angeles counties.“One year ago, and every day since, this community has shown the world that it will not be defined by the violence inflicted upon it,” Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub told the crowd Thursday. “It is this community’s indomitable spirit, not an act of violence, that defines it.”The garden, 1348

The Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday that some people and companies are trying to profit from this pandemic by selling unproven and illegally marketed products that make false claims, such as being effective against the coronavirus. The FDA says that products that claim to cure, treat, or prevent COVID-19 haven't been evaluated by the FDA for safety and effectiveness, and calls said products "dangerous."Wednesday's announcement comes two weeks after the FDA previously announced it sent letters to a number of companies that sell products that allegedly claim to treat or prevent coronavirus. Simply put, if there are any products that claim to treat or cure coronavirus, the FDA says not to buy it."The FDA is working with medical product developers to rapidly advance the development and availability of vaccines and treatments for COVID-19. Although there are investigational COVID-19 vaccines and treatments being studied in clinical trials, these products are in the early stages of development. They haven't yet been fully tested for safety or effectiveness, or received FDA approval," the FDA said on Wednesday,' the FDA said.
