Retailers and logistics experts say, like everything else in 2020, this year's holiday shopping season will be like no other. You can expect delays, out of stock items and missed deadlines.David Bolotsky is the founder and CEO of the online retailer Uncommon Goods, which connects independent artists, designers and makers with customers. The Brooklyn-based company was at the epicenter of the pandemic and had to shut down for three months. Then, when everyone started shopping again, they did well.Now, they, and many other businesses, are encouraging people to get started on their shopping. No need to wait for Black Friday. In fact, they're warning people to start before Thanksgiving. Like now.“Demand has been strong and a friend of mine calls it ‘Shipaggedon,' concern about what’s going to happen in the transportation network,” says Bolotsky, who also says the supply chain will be limited. “What I think it means for shoppers is if you see something you want, I would buy it now; stick it under the tree.”Kirsten Newbold-Knipp, chief growth office at Convey, a technology company that helps retailers with on time deliveries said, “All the delivery trucks are out and they are busy, you may not have heard of it but there’s sort of a shortage going on right now. They’re having a capacity crunch, not enough drivers, not enough trucks not enough warehouses right now, because of all the things the pandemic has done. We’ve started shopping online more and more and no one anticipated it.”Logistics and shipping are her expertise.“We help them think about what are the trucks doing what are the packages doing what’s happening with on time delivery what kind of damage is happening so they can give consumers the best delivery experience- holidays or not,” Newbold-Knipp said.This year, holiday gifts will undergo a true supply and demand issue, magnified by a pandemic and already backfilled orders. Add in staffing made difficult by things like social distancing and we've got problems.“The other thing that consumers don’t think about is that the actual warehouse space to be able to fulfill orders is limited. They might not have the inventory so fulfillment times are delaying, the pick and pack piece is taking longer and the trucking piece is taking longer,” said Newbold-Knipp.She said consumers need to think ahead, have a backup plan, look for alternatives, use multiple retailers, shop locally, and sign up for text alerts."Only 5% are signing up for SMS alerts, but by regulation the retailer can’t spam you. They’re only allowed to send you a transactional note via text,” Newbold-Knipp said.She also said things that tend to sell out are the items that don't have much variation, such as televisions, toys and specific electronics.“If we see the kind of growth at Christmas that we’ve seen the last few months, we could be looking at 50% growth over last year in terms of online demand,” BolotskyHe recommends having Santa come early, and hide those items until the big day. 3006
Reversing an earlier decision, the University of Notre Dame will continue providing students and employees with access to birth control free of charge.The Catholic institution was one of the first major employers to take advantage of the Trump administration's weakening of Obamacare's contraceptive mandate.Notre Dame, which had long battled the Obama administration over the provision, said in late October that it would end coverage for employees after Dec. 31 and for students after Aug. 14. The university said it objects to the mandate based on its religious beliefs.Students and employees quickly protested the decision, holding a demonstration and creating an online petition.Under Obamacare, insurance plans had to cover contraception for women without charging a co-pay. A fairly limited number of employers -- mainly churches and some other religious entities -- could get an exemption to the mandate.Some other employers, such as religious-based universities or hospitals, could seek accommodations so that they didn't have to provide coverage, but their workers could still obtain contraceptives paid for by the insurer or the employer's plan administrator. Notre Dame's students and workers received coverage this way.The Trump administration, however, issued new rules last month that would let a broad range of employers stop offering contraceptive coverage through their health insurance plans if they have a "sincerely held religious or moral objection."In his annual faculty address Tuesday, Notre Dame's president, the Rev. John Jenkins, said the university had decided to keep the accommodation for employees in place."As I have said from the start, the university's interest has never been in preventing access to those who make conscientious decisions to use contraceptives," he said. "Our interest, rather, has been to avoid being compelled by the federal government to be the agent in their provision."A university spokesman confirmed that students would continue to have access to no-cost birth control, as well.Notre Dame's initial response was based on its belief that it could no longer utilize the accommodation because the new rule would prompt insurers to discontinue providing no-cost contraceptives. (AP) — Officials say California's unemployment rate fell to a new record low of 4% in September.The state Employment Development Department said Friday that employers added 21,300 nonfarm payroll jobs. That extended California's record job expansion to 115 months.The unemployment rate in August was 4.1%, matching the previous record low first set in 2018.The state's current period of job expansion tied the 1960s' expansion when it reached 113 months.California has gained 3,348,900 jobs since the expansion began in February 2010. 561

(AP) -- Santa found himself a little more tied up than usual this time of year.A Northern California man impersonating Santa Claus and flying on a powered parachute was rescued after he became entangled in power lines.The incident happened Sunday shortly after the man took off near a school in Rio Linda to deliver candy canes to children.KCRA-TV reports the man flew into a maze of power lines and wound up suspended in them.Officials say power was shut off to about 200 customers in the Rio Linda area during the rescue.The man, who wasn't identified, was not injured. 597
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California Senate has voted to expand job protections to more people who take time off to care for a family member. State law allows workers to take up to 12 weeks of leave to care for a family member. But the law only protects the jobs of people who work at companies with at least 50 employees. The Senate voted 21-12 on Thursday to expand those protections to companies with at least five employees. Republicans and some moderate Democrats opposed the bill. They argued it was too hard for small businesses to find short-term replacements for employees. 594
