(AP) -- A Connecticut city is offering free roadside assistance to bicyclists when they suffer a flat tire or other minor mechanical problems.The program in Hartford is run by the city's business improvement district and is touted as the first of its kind in the nation. It is designed to encourage bicycle commuting.Six district employees have been trained to fix flats, repair broken chains, adjust brakes and do other minor bicycle repairs. They patrol the streets on bikes and have responded to more than 40 calls from stranded bicyclists since launching the initiative in May.The city's bicycle and pedestrian coordinator says Hartford also recently adopted a "complete streets" initiative, which will require all new road improvement projects to include bicycle lanes. 798

Health officials say the U.S. faces an uphill battle in convincing some Americans to take a potential COVID-19 vaccine. While polling shows Americans have been more open to a vaccine in recent months, there is still skepticism in vaccines among non-whites across the country.Experts say that Black people, in particular, remain skeptical of vaccines due to past failings of the U.S. healthcare system, in particular, the Tuskegee syphilis study. But the National Medical Association — a nonprofit representing the interests of Black doctors across the country — is trying to fight that skepticism ahead of the potential authorization of a COVID-19 vaccine."We're already suffering more than other community, and we would hate to see that suffering gap widen because members of our community did not affect to receive a vaccine that could have prevented kidney disease, prevented lung damage from COVID-19," Dr. Leon McDougle, the president of the National Medical Association said.The National Medical Association's task force has been doing its own independent vetting of potential COVID-19 vaccines, and McDougle added they are doing so to ensure that politicians are not influencing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)."We are trusted messengers for health in the Black community," McDougle said. "That's where we live. GENEVA, Ohio — As the service industry struggles due to the COVID-19 pandemic, business owners and employees face a new stressor: enforcing mask mandates and seating requirements at bars and restaurants.It’s no secret that adults don’t enjoy being told what to do, especially if they feel enforcement infringes on their personal space or choices. Behavioral therapists say there is a complex science that explains why some adults have reverted to infantile behavior during the pandemic.In recent weeks, there have been several incidents across in the country about high-profile disputes over masks — some of which have grown violent. The owner of a northeast Ohio winery said such a dispute led to property damage over the weekend.“We did have one incident where a customer punched a hole in the drywall in the men’s room at 7 p.m. on Saturday night,” said Gene Sigel, the owner of South River Vineyard.Sigel said in 20 years, the winery has never had any sort of property damage, but new state-mandated restrictions when visiting the vineyard appear to have some customers on edge.“We’re used to enforcing guidelines from the governor,” Sigel said. “But at the same time, asking people to sit down or put on a mask is a whole new range of imposition on people’s personal space.”While Sigel said the hole in the wall is a fairly inexpensive fix, his employees feel the behavior speaks to the way service industry workers are being treated by customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.“It certainly played into the tension,” Sigel said. “For whatever reason, somebody felt that the only place that there wouldn’t be a surveillance camera was in the restroom and that was a good place to leave a comment on their feelings as to the requirements here.”Behavioral therapists at the Cleveland Clinic report there’s scientific data to back up why adults behave this way in stressful situations. “Rebel psychological reactance” refers to the brain’s reaction to a threat to freedom or personal choices.Therapists believe those frustrations sometimes cause people to abandon common sense and behave erratically, even when safety is concerned.Sigel said he wants to remind customers to be patient with staff when visiting the vineyard and other businesses and added that employees are all doing the best they can to provide an enjoyable experience despite the new restrictions.“None of us have a lot of options of places to go. GREELEY, Colorado — Authorities released Monday the autopsy reports of Shanann Watts, 34; Bella Watts, 4; and Celeste Watts, 3. The reports concluded that all three victims died of asphyxiation — Shanann was strangled while the two girls were smothered, according to the reports. The reports had been sealed until the outcome of the trial. However, Chris Watts — Shanann’s husband and father of Bella and Celeste — pleaded guilty to their murders earlier this month and was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.All three victims were pronounced deceased on Aug. 16. The girls' bodies were found submerged in an oil tank on property owned by the company Watts worked for. His wife's body was found in a shallow grave nearby.The autopsy reports state that Shanann Watts was found in a purple T-shirt and underwear. She had patterned abrasions on her neck and the left side of her face when her body was found. Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke said during sentencing Monday that the lack of significant injuries to Shanann Watts suggested that her death came slowly.The coroner noted in the report that Shanann had been in the second trimester of pregnancy at the time of her murder. Family members had called the unborn child “Nico.” Chris Watts was convicted of unlawful termination of a pregnancy. Bella’s report indicates she had a pink pajama-type top with images of hearts and butterflies and underwear on when her body was found. The coroner found blunt force trauma on Bella’s jaw and lacerations and contusions in her mouth. Her left shoulder was discolored, and teeth impressions and superficial bite marks were found on the surface of Bella’s tongue — signs, Rourke said, Bella "fought for her life." Celeste was found in a pink and black T-shirt. The 3-year-old was wearing a diaper and underwear. Celeste had no visible injuries.Prosecutors said Chris Watts was having an affair and making plans for a new life. Rourke said Watts talked with a real estate agent about selling the family's home, looked up secluded vacation spots and didn't seem interested in the self-help books his wife provided.A friend asked police to check on Shanann Watts on Aug. 13 after not being able to reach her and grew concerned that the expectant mother had missed a doctor's appointment. Watts spoke to Denver7 from the front porch of the family's home in Frederick, pleading for his family’s safe return.
