SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 13-year-old San Ysidro girl's act of kindness has helped inspire others to give.Sahara Rodriguez read an article and how a young boy in Tijuana, Alexis, was trading his toys for food after his mother lost her job during the pandemic. Rodriguez wanted to help. She asked her mother to begin collecting food. They went to neighbors and friends to gather what they could, then traveled across the border to deliver the food to Alexis family."I’m very proud of her," said her mother, Dafne Noguez. "She’s a very shy girl and I’m very surprised that she’s been coming out of her shell and able to help a lot of people.” Noguez credits Sahara's involvement with the Girl Scouts for helping her daughter develop more confidence and leadership skills."It’s just so inspiring to see how she’s growing in that sense," said Alexandra Delgado of Girl Scouts San Diego, who has worked with Sahara over the years. "She did that step herself. Nobody asked her to do it. She just felt it was right.”Since that first donation, Sahara has continued collecting food donations to take to Tijuana. Alexis' family is now back on its feet, and Alexis is helping Sahara find other families more in need of the aid. "As a Girl Scout, it’s good to help people and we need to be caring about other people," Sahara said.In addition to collecting donations to deliver across the border, Sahara also works to help Rady Children's Hospital and is now working on a project to contribute to her community in San Ysidro. 1515

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 40-year-old San Diego cold case was solved with the help of a genealogical database, the San Diego Police Department said Thursday. 37-year-old Barbara Becker was murdered in her La Jolla home on March 21, 1979, police said. According to the department, Becker’s two young boys came home from school to discover their mother’s body. RELATED: Genetic genealogy results solve new cold case as privacy concerns continueBecker died from “numerous sharp force injuries” but, based on evidence, police say she put up a fight, injuring the suspect in the process and causing him to leave behind a trail of blood. Detectives worked to solve the crime, but police say eventually all leads were exhausted and the case went cold. In October of 2018, the San Diego Police Cold Case Unit and San Diego County’s District Attorney’s Office reached out to the FBI’s genealogy team for help solving the case. Police say the team was able to identify a possible suspect using the public-access genealogical database as well as several family members of the suspect. Members of Chartrand’s family told investigators that he lived in the San Diego area at the time of Becker’s murder. Investigators also learned that Chartrand died in Arizona in 1995. “The entire investigative team is grateful the case has been solved however, it is tempered by the fact it took forty years to give Barbara Becker’s family the answers they deserved and that Chartrand was able to avoid justice for 16 years after Barbara Becker’s murder,” the San Diego Police Department said in a statement. 1777

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A gray whale spotted frolicking in shallow waters attracted dolphins and a crowd of swimmers and surfers in the ocean off Mission Beach Wednesday. Lifeguards got a call about the whale possible tangled in fishing line about noon, an official said. A lifeguard who swam toward the whale to investigate determined it was free.The gray whale was young, possibly a year and a half old, whale watcher and photographer Domenic Biagini told 10News. Gray whales are starting to migrate north from Mexico during the spring. There is a good chance San Diegans will see more mothers and juvenile whales closer to shore, Biagini says, because the shallow waters keep the whales safe from orcas. "It's some of the most exciting times for us as professional whale watchers to see these animals, but it's also when we see the most conflicts with these animals coming in with people," said Biagini.Sky10 was above the whale as a group of surfers and swimmers approached it near Mission Beach, coming close to the giant mammal.Biagini warns that can be extremely dangerous for humans and can also stress the animal."These gray whales, despite not being the largest of the great whales we see out here, they can still get 50 feet long and weigh up to 80,000 pounds, so you're talking very large animals. All it takes is one flick of the tail and you have a catastrophic accident. And moms are naturally protective of their young," said Biagini. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Clairemont woman received a big shock when she looked at her doorbell camera video and found out who vandalized her truck.Every time Kris Larrabee looks at the scratch across the hood of her truck, she gets more upset."Deeply angry and deeply hurt," said Larrabee. The damage appeared Thursday morning after her husband parked the truck in the driveway the night before, blocking part of the sidewalk. "He came back from a long road trip, exhausted. He parked it there so he could unload it the next day," said Larrabee.Just before 6 a.m. on Caywood Street, their Ring video shows an older woman walking a dog, before she pauses to look at the truck. Immediately, she walks across the driveway and runs her hand along the hood, leaving behind a new scratch. Larrabee says repairs will total several thousand dollars."I couldn't believe it. I was shocked," said Larrabee.The identity of the culprit made her heart sink."She's a mature woman. At her age, she should have known better," said Larrabee.Larrabe was even more taken aback, because her other car has been keyed eight times in the driveway in the past year. She had suspected teenagers. In all, neighbors have reported dozens of similar incidents in the past year. A block away, the owner of a van and another vehicle tells 10News he has also been keyed eight times. In all those incidents, the sidewalk was partially blocked. The neighborhood is an older one with shorter driveways. "This is not the solution. She could have left a note. She could have come to us. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 25-year-old man has been taken into custody after his 53-year-old mother was found dead Monday evening in the College West neighborhood. Officers were called to the 4800 block of Collwood Boulevard around 4:40 p.m. Monday night after receiving reports of a deceased person inside a home. According to San Diego Police, family members tried to contact the 53-year-old woman who lived inside, but had not been able to contact her for several days.When officers entered the home, they found the woman dead.“Information provided by family members led to the 25 year-old son being located at an area hospital where he was receiving treatment for injuries he sustained to his hands,” police said.The man has been taken into custody and will be transported to headquarters for processing as a possible suspect, police said. 846
