Former Donald Trump campaign official Rick Gates pleaded guilty Friday to two criminal charges in special counsel Robert Mueller's wide-ranging investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign and related activities.Gates is now the third Trump associate known to be working with Mueller's investigation, and his plea deal will put the spotlight on former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.Prosecutors are trying to pressure Manafort to speak with prosecutors about what he knows, particularly about the campaign.Gates was Manafort's right-hand man for a decade, was privy to most, if not all, of Manafort's activities during the campaign and stayed in the Trump orbit after Manafort's exit. Manafort has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.In Friday's hearing, Gates told a federal judge that he understood his potential sentence depended on his cooperation with prosecutors on the charges: conspiracy to commit to defraud the United States and making false statements.Gates, bearded and wearing a blue suit, tie and cuff links, listened to the judge read the offenses he is agreeing to plead guilty to and the possibility of being sentenced to up to 57 to 71 months in prison. He said "Yes, your honor" repeatedly as Judge Amy Berman Jackson read the court documents.Thursday, prosecutors described a "scheme" in which the two longtime business partners allegedly laundered million, failed to pay taxes for almost 10 years and used real estate they owned to fraudulently secure more than million in loans.Gates said that despite his "initial desire to vigorously defend myself," he has had a "change of heart" in order to protect his family, according to a letter sent to his family and friends, obtained by CNN from a Gates friend."The reality of how long this legal process will likely take, the cost, and the circus-like atmosphere of an anticipated trial are too much," Gates wrote. "I will better serve my family moving forward by exiting this process."He wrote that it was "difficult decision" to make, but that ensuring his family's "well-being is first and foremost.""The consequence is the public humiliation, which at this moment seems like a small price to pay for what our children would have to endure otherwise," he said.Last Friday, the special counsel produced grand jury indictments for 13 Russian nationals, accusing them of operating a misinformation campaign to hurt Hillary Clinton's presidential effort. In a statement, Manafort maintained his innocence."Notwithstanding that Rick Gates pled today, I continue to maintain my innocence. I had hoped and expected my business colleague would have had the strength to continue the battle to prove our innocence," Manafort said. "For reasons yet to surface he chose to do otherwise. This does not alter my commitment to defend myself against the untrue piled up charges contained in the indictments against me." Plea in motion for weeks 2958
Four sisters from Nebraska were ecstatic when they found out they were all pregnant at the exact same time.Elizabeth, Danielle, Michelle, and Sarah delivered not four but five babies, all in the course of 12 days.Elizabeth Kohlhoff delivered twins on April 29."Danielle was the first," Elizabeth said. "And then Sarah and Michelle and I were like thank goodness it's not me! And then all of a sudden I'm like oh wow, me now."Elizabeth, Danielle, Michelle, and Sarah carried their babies during the pandemic. Grandma Mary was excited but worried about her daughters."It was scary," Mary Sneed, the grandmother, said. "It was all scary but you know pregnancy's scary. Having a baby is scary. So praise god everybody's healthy. It was perfect."Everything went well, and they delivered five babies. Twins Henry and Emma, Alivia, Josephine, and Natalie. Especially because Michelle Ismert lost her first baby during pregnancy.Michelle gave birth to Josephine on May 1"We lost our first at 37 weeks," Michelle said. Former Vice President Joe Biden paid tribute to the late Sen. John McCain in Phoenix in a speech at his memorial service on Thursday, sharing personal stories about their time together in the Senate and lamenting disorder and division in the chamber that McCain fought to repair."We both loved the Senate," said Biden, who mourned the fading of bipartisanship in the chamber over the years. "We both lamented, watching it change."Biden and McCain used to sit next to each other during long debates in the 1980s and '90s. In 1996, they were each told independently by members of their own parties that their visible friendship didn't look good. 651

Friday marks the final day of increased unemployment benefits passed under the CARES Act — and while millions of Americans are seeking unemployment insurance each week, it will likely be several weeks before lawmakers agree on a replacement.Republicans and Democrats remain far apart in negotiations to extend benefits, despite President Donald Trump's offer on Thursday to sign a short-term extension of the 0 unemployment benefits.“We want a temporary extension of enhanced unemployment benefits,” Trump said at the White House. “This will provide a critical bridge for Americans who lost their jobs to the pandemic through no fault of their own.”However, Democrats rejected Trump's proposal, instead opting to try and pass a more comprehensive bill that would include more stimulus.Earlier this week, Republicans — who are currently broken into groups of more moderate members and deficit hawks — proposed a trillion stimulus plan that would keep increased benefits, but cut them by more than half to 0 a week. The benefits would only last for a few months before states would be required to set up their own unemployment programs.Democrats, on the other hand, favor a trillion stimulus plan, which passed through the House in May. The bill would keep 0 a week unemployment benefits through the end of the year and extend them to gig workers and self-employed people who are out of work.Republicans claim the unemployment benefits incentivize people not to work. Democrats argue that the government must subsidize those at-risk people who feel they cannot work for fear of contracting the virus. 1621
