It's been a brutal week for many big American retailers.JCPenney announced Friday that it will cut 360 jobs at its stores and corporate headquarters. Its stock fell 6% Friday morning.And the other shoe dropped at Foot Locker. The sneaker and athletic apparel company's sales missed forecasts and its outlook was weak as well. They are just doing so on their phones as opposed to at the mall.That's been great for e-commerce leader Amazon, which has continued to post impressive sales growth. Its stock is also up more than 25% this year and is near a record high.Coye Nokes, partner in the consumer and retail practice at strategy consulting firm OC&C, said that the threat from Amazon is clearly the biggest challenge for most traditional retailers."Amazon is still coming and it is entering even more categories," she said.But she added that there are some retailers that have been fighting back and have done a good job of boosting their own digital operations.Related: Macy's is back! Stock up on solid salesMacy's shares rallied earlier this week after the iconic retailer topped analysts' forecasts and said that online sales continued to grow at a double-digit pace.Best Buy also posted strong sales in its stores and digital operations on Thursday. The electronics retailer's stock even rose 4% while the broader market tanked on fears of a global trade war.And there are other traditional retailers that are holding up well.Gap shares bucked the market's downward trend Friday, rising 5% after it posted solid results. The Gap's Old Navy brand is on fire. Its same-store sales were up 9% during the holiday quarter.Department store chain Dillard's topped forecasts earlier this week too, sending its shares up nearly 17% on the news.So it's not all doom and gloom for retail. It’s that time, when stores offer up their best deals on the hottest items. Some of the advertised deals can even cause customers to stand in lines for hours and even camp out the night before the items go on sale. But this could be a big waste of time.“Don’t buy something just because it’s on sale,” says Kevin Brasler, the executive editor of the consumer watch dog group Consumer’s Checkbook.Brasler tracked sales and deals at 19 major retailers for nearly a year to find out which companies are telling the truth when advertising their sales.  "Most of these stores offering big ticket items are just offering the same deal they did before and the same deal they offered the next week,” says Brasler of his findings. “It wasn't a special price."  The worst offenders range from big box stores to high-end retailers. And with Black Friday around the corner, Brasler warns consumers to be cautious of those doorbuster deals, especially those early morning sales urging you to get up to get amazing deals on hot items before they go.   "There's for sure no reason to get excited about most of the items they are selling on Black Friday, because we found the sales they are offering then are just about the same as they otherwise are," he says.  Then there are those buy one and get one half-off sales. Brasler says these, too, are often a sham.  "These sales they just call them different sales; it's really rare that they have a super good price that you better grab right then and there otherwise it will go away forever,” Brasler says.  That's because the less expensive item is usually the one that gets the half-off deal. So, in reality, you're really not saving that much at all.Also, beware of going out of business sales.    "You're not offering them a special price; you're offering them the usual price," Brasler says.  Sometimes, the third-party liquidator prices the items higher than the original price. INDIANTOWN, Fla. — Heartbreaking new details are coming to light about the deadly shooting of a mother in front of her six children on Tuesday.According to Martin County, Florida, Sheriff William Snyder, Maribel Rosado Morales, 32, was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, Donald Williams, 27, inside a home.The sheriff said six children, ranging in age from 9 to 17, were inside the home at the time of the shooting."We think most of the children in the home saw it," Snyder said at a news conference on Tuesday.On Wednesday, WPTV spoke to Morales' fiancé and brother, both of who did not want to be identified. They confirmed that all six children are Morales' and she was keeping them home from school because of the COVID-19 pandemic."She was a strong person. She was a loving person," said Morales' brother.Morales' fiancé said he was on the phone with her when the shooting happened, and he could hear the children yelling that their mother had been shot.The fiancé said that after Morales was hit, she barricaded herself inside a closet for her safety and so her children wouldn't see."I was on the phone with her. I said, 'baby, call the police,'" Morales' fiancé said. "Why? She didn’t do nothing. Why? She didn’t deserve it. I wasn’t there to save her. I wasn’t there."Sheriff Snyder said at least one of the children was doing virtual learning during the first day of school in Martin County when the gunfire rang out."[The teacher] did hear some high tone conversation, noticed some kind of confrontation, muted it, and then watched the [child] put her hands up to her ears," Sheriff Snyder said.On Wednesday, Morales' family members said the child on the class call at the time is 9 years old and has Down syndrome.Williams was taken into custody not long after the shooting while trying to board a public transportation bus.“I have hatred. Yeah, I’m not going to lie, I want to do 1,000 things to him. But you know what? I forgive him, man. I forgive him and he’ll have his day," Morales' fiancé said.
