BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of National Defense (MOD) Friday introduced its new spokesmen, Senior Colonel Geng Yansheng and Colonel Yang Yujun, to domestic and foreign media during a press tour to an engineering regiment of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).Geng, 50, and Yang, 40, have become the ministry's third and fourth spokesmen.Their appointment came ahead of the PLA's founding anniversary on Aug. 1. Their two predecessors, Hu Changming and Huang Xueping, have been transferred to other jobs in the ministry.Geng told Xinhua that the MOD plans to hold regular press briefings, since 16 other ministries have done so.About 140 reporters, photographers and cameramen from home and abroad visited the engineering regiment building in southern suburban Beijing, watching dozens of soldiers demonstrating a mock rescue operation at a building which was "reduced" to rubble in a quake.Founded in 1964, the engineering regiment trains rescue members for the China International Search and Rescue (CISAR), which was established in 2001 with its personnel drawn from the China Seismological Bureau and the General Hospital of the Armed Police Force.The CISAR has completed six domestic rescue operations in Xinjiang, Qinghai and Sichuan, and six international rescue missions in Algeria, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia and Haiti.After watching the simulation training, many reporters held interviews with the CISAR members and enquired as to how they managed to work in the face of big disasters."I felt deeply sad and hopeless when someone died in front of me after the quake," said Gao Yansheng, a 19-year-old CISAR member, who took part in the Yushu earthquake search and rescue operation in April.Another CISAR member, whose name was not given, said he was "astonished and also anxious" during the Sichuan earthquake rescue work in 2008.Liu Xiangyang, deputy director of the CISAR, said in an interview with Xinhua that CISAR members became physically and psychologically stronger after going through the Sichuan earthquake rescue work.CISAR members needed to learn more about earthquakes and put up with more complicated disaster situations, Liu added."It will become a routine activity of the PLA to open its military bases for the media interaction beginning around August 1," said Senior Colonel Li Zhen, vice director with the MOD's International Communication Office. WUHAN/XI'AN, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in two Chinese provinces traversed by the Hanjiang River, the largest branch of the swollen Yangtze River, issued fresh flood warnings Friday.The Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in central Hubei Province said areas along the Hanjiang River will face severe floods.Pressure is building at the Danjiangkou reservoir, which is already dealing with the worst flooding of the year so far.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 150.74 meters by Friday, about 1.74 meters above the warning line, and is expected to rise to 152 meters before the end of the month.Engineers at the reservoir more than doubled the flow rate of water from 1,920 cubic-meters per second to 5,000 cubic-meters per second.Along the upper reaches of the Hanjiang River in Shaanxi Province, floods and landslides had left at least 73 people dead and 121 missing as of Friday noon, the provincial government said.About 213,000 residents from 24 counties and districts in the cities of Hanzhong, Ankang and Shangluo in southern Shaanxi have been evacuated. More than 60,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged.A new round of rainstorms began to pound the region Thursday. Between 20 to 80 millimeters of rain has fallen, raising water levels in the Hanjiang River.Authorities in Shaanxi have ordered disaster relief agencies and government departments evacuate flood-threatened residents as soon as possible.Floods in China this year had left 742 people dead and 367 missing as of 9:00 a.m. Friday.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 19 (Xinhua)-- More than 1,700 mudslide evacuees presently residing at schools in Zhouqu county of northwest China's Gansu Province are to be relocated as students will start the new semester soon, local authorities said Thursday.More than 400 households, altogether over 1,700 people, will be moved to Shachuan Village, in western of the mudslides-leveled county, said Yang Jianguo, head of the Civil Affairs Bureau of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture which administers Zhouqu.The people are now living in dormitories and classrooms of three local schools, namely No.1 High School, No.1 Junior High and No. 3 Junior High. With students coming back from their summer vacation, the schools could no longer be used as settlement areas.More than one thousand tents will be erected at the new settlement zone covering an area of 67 mu (4.5 hectares), with three tents for each family, said Yang."They probably will have to spend the winter there so winter tents will be used," said Yang.The devastating mudslides which hit on Aug. 8 have claimed 1,364 lives with 401 people still missing as of 4 p.m. Thursday.Work crews will level the ground, ensure water and electricity supply and build lavatories from Aug. 21 to 23. They will start setting up tents on Aug. 24, said Yang.The new semester for junior school students and pupils will begin on Aug. 25 and senior high students will be transferred to other cities in the province, and start the new semester in early September.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in the massive mudslide in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 1,144, with 600 still missing as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the provincial department of civil affairs said late Thursday.The toll rose from 1,117 on Wednesday.Overnight downpours triggered new floods and mudslides to the mudslide-devastated town of Zhouqu in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, leaving three people missing.Floods also have left eight people dead and eight others missing in two counties in Gannan's neighboring city of Longnan on Thursday.
