SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A South Bay high school was placed on lockdown while police searched a vehicle outside the campus.San Diego Police placed Southwest High School under lockdown while officers searched a vehicle they stopped on Hollister Street, just outside campus.Police said the traffic stop was a result of someone reporting they saw a gun. The suspected vehicle was located and pulled over.Southwest High was placed on lockdown as a precaution and police said the campus wasn't being threatened - the traffic stop just happened to occur outside the school property.Police found a BB gun inside the vehicle. No shots were fired and no one was injured.The lockdown was later lifted.Police said they encourage anyone who thinks they see a weapon to report it to authorities. 799

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After getting approved by voters, San Diego State is moving forward with its SDSU Mission Valley Plan. As they are still working out the finishing touches, community members are offering their suggestions to organizers. SDSU Mission Valley still calls for a stadium, housing for students and the public, retail space, offices and a river park. Local land use and design professionals met in Balboa Park this morning to offer their ideas on how to enhance and improve the existing plans."They want to make sure that this very large development... isn't like an island in the middle of Mission Valley," says Cary Lowe, with C3 San Diego. Community members want to ensure the project "connects fluidly with the surrounding community."There are other concerns, as well. Once construction begins, crews may have to remediate a gas plume that once sat under the site."A number of people have raised the issue of the subsurface contamination of the site," says Lowe. This has "been a long time issue because of a leak from fuel tanks in Murphy Canyon."Lowe says there is an elaborate plan for the possible contamination removal. But as negotiations continue, it is unclear if the city or university will be paying for it. Land use and design professionals estimate the project to begin towards the beginning of next year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An Escondido firefighter is being praised for a small act of kindness that impacted a 7-year-old in a big way.Last week the department was responding to palm trees on fire. That's when Craig Domingue, a fire engineer, noticed Eli walking with his mom. "We happened to be walking and spotted the fire truck. Eli kind of, his anxiety was kicking in," said Eli's mom, Monica Zamora. Eli is on the autism spectrum; loud noises and first responders give him anxiety. "I just went up to him and introduced myself and talked to him like I would talk to any person, and it was a really neat interaction," said Domingue.Domingue says he was able to recognize Eli was on the spectrum because his 10-year-old son is too. He was able to calm Eli down and thanked him for picking up trash."Eli at the time was out picking up trash, which is so neat that he's here doing something good for our community, just like all the other firefighters that are here doing good for the community," said Domingue. "We do go pick up trash a lot, but it's not often people acknowledge him and thank him for what he's doing," said Zamora. Zamora shared the positive interaction on Facebook, and over 1,000 people have reacted to the post. Many have since messaged Zamora, thanking Eli for all he does in the community. 1316

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An almost strangled coyote is getting sympathy from Katie Ryan's neighbors in Oaks North in Rancho Bernardo and from online friends."People are just 'Wow! This is phenomenal. Let's get her rescued, let's get her rescued!'" Ryan said.What appears to be 5- or 6-inch length of plastic flex-pipe that might have been discarded is wrapped tightly around the coyote's neck."Little critters try to make a home in there and other wildlife try to bring out a meal and it's obvious she got her head stuck in there and couldn't back it out," Ryan said.RELATED: Man in construction worker disguise suspected in series of San Diego break-insRyan's familiar with this particular coyote; having seen it out and about for years. Many people fear coyotes but she appreciates the wildlife she watches nightly."They're part of the eco-system here; they clean up; this was one of my favorite rat-catchers," Ryan said.She's worried that cuts on the coyote's neck will get infected and poison it; so she and others have been trying to capture the animal.  "Little tidbits of goodies to lead her in this direction and she almost got into a smaller coyote trap," she added.Wednesday night, they set up a larger trap; one that is mountain lion-sized but no success."She stayed ten feet away from the corner; I think she knew, she spotted the difference in the trap. They're very sensitive to change in the environment and when that happens, they run off," Ryan said.Her brainstorming with others now; hoping to get to the coyote in time; somehow."We're hoping we get her and get her some medical help; get her fixed up and put back into nature." 1703
