Residents and businesses near a dam in North Carolina appeared to have dodged potential disaster Wednesday after an emergency at the location was called off.Earlier, heavy rains and a landslide in the western North Carolina mountains "compromised the integrity" of Lake Tahoma dam and triggered urgent calls for mandatory evacuations.Emergency officials said the dam was "at risk of imminent failure" and the weather service extended a flash flood warning for central McDowell County until 12:30 p.m.The National Weather Service cited reports early Wednesday from McDowell County emergency management officials that "water is spilling around the sides of Lake Tahoma dam. Evacuations ongoing south of the dam."But later, McDowell County emergency officials said Lake Tahoma had been inspected and deemed safe and a mandatory evacuation was halted. "The emergency at Lake Tahoma has been canceled. The evacuation order is no longer in effect. (CNS) - A teenage boy was fatally struck by a pickup truck while riding a skateboard on a residential road in the San Diego Country Estates neighborhood of Ramona, authorities said Wednesday.The fatality occurred around 7:20 p.m. Tuesday on Barona Mesa Road near La Plata Court, in a neighborhood south of San Vicente Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Christy said.Two teenage boys were riding skateboards to the east in the eastbound lane of Barona Mesa Road and another teen was riding a bicycle eastbound in the westbound lane, Christy said. He said that when a 20-year-old Ramona man driving a 2001 Ford F-150 eastbound on Barona Mesa Road came around a left-hand curve in the road, the front of the truck one of the boys, who was riding his skateboard in the middle of the eastbound lane.The driver stopped immediately and began rendering medical aid to the victim, the officer said. Medical personnel also responded, but the youth was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification.Intoxication was not a factor in the crash, Christy said. 1112

President Donald Trump took action Wednesday to make it a little easier for the nation's military spouses to find employment as their families deploy domestically and abroad.The President signed an executive order aimed at increasing opportunities for military spouses to obtain federal jobs and encouraging agencies to increase their use of the noncompetitive hiring authority for military spouses. Trump said he hoped the executive action would encourage private-sector businesses to follow suit in their hiring practices.Speaking to a crowd of military spouses at the White House, the President said, "Your support is essential to making our military the mightiest fighting force in the world and getting stronger all the time."He continued, "We can never repay you for all that you do. We know what you do, and your spouse knows what you do. We can never repay you for that, but we can and we will give you the opportunities you deserve."The unemployment rate for military spouses is 16%, four times the national average for female adults, a statistic the President noted.A survey of military families released last June from Hiring Our Heroes, a US Chamber of Commerce foundation, found that unemployment and underemployment are major challenges for the spouses of service members, 92% of whom are female.
