CORONADO (KGTV) — New rules go into effect on Thursday, August 16, restricting where people can and can't use e-cigarettes in Coronado.The City Council passed an ordinance on July 17 to make the popular devices subject to the same rules as regular cigarettes, banning their use in many public places.According to the new law, e-cigarettes will no longer be allowed in the following unenclosed areas:1. All public property including, but not limited to, streets, highways, alleys, rights-of-way, parkways, sidewalks, parking lots and pathways; 2. Outdoor public places; 3. Outdoor recreational areas; 4. Outdoor service areas; 5. Outdoor dining areas.An exception has been made for the Municipal Golf Course, where smoking is also allowed.Anyone caught breaking the new rule could be subject to a 0 fine. The city will put up new signs to let people know of the change.Language in the City Council proposition showed that city leaders feared vaping devices and the smoke from them could be dangerous to the public health. They also wanted to eliminate confusion by having different rules for different kinds of smoking.E-cigarette advocates say bans like these are counter-productive.The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association sent a statement to 10News that reads, in part, "Smoking laws that include a ban on vaping send the inaccurate and misleading message that e-cigarettes are just as harmful as smoking. To date, there is no credible scientific evidence to support this claim. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - Three Coronado restaurants were closed for cleaning on Tuesday after employees tested positive for the coronavirus. One of the restaurants, The Henry, is facing backlash over accusations that it was not transparent with its patrons.On Facebook, The Henry posted the following message on Monday night.“Coronado neighbors,We apologize for not being more transparent with you about our first COVID positive case last week. Even though we messed up our communication, please know that we took all the right actions to make sure our guests, our employees and our restaurant space were as safe as possible before we re-opened.We went through our entire protocol for a COVID exposure the night after we became aware one of our employees was COVID positive. This includes third-party sanitation of the restaurant, contacting all employees before they returned to work to make sure we knew who had CDC defined exposure to the COVID employee and making sure all employees had access to testing at our cost, regardless of exposure. We got lucky that we were able to get this done so quickly. That has not always been the case. In another restaurant out-of-state, we had to close a restaurant for nearly a week as we waited for the sanitation company and sufficient staff to safely reopen. No one in our industry is happy about the fact we are all getting more experienced and better at responding to COVID exposures.Some of you have asked us why we did not notify the San Diego Health Department about the COVID positive employee. We know the employee's health care provider has notified the Health Department and that we, as employers, are not required to do so. But because of your question today and after calling the San Diego Health Department who encouraged voluntary notification, the Henry is committing to do so. With all of this in mind, this evening we notified the Health Department that we received information about a second COVID positive employee.The employee in this second case was last in the restaurant on Thursday, July 2. We are closing the restaurant early this evening and will be proceeding with sanitation and employee contacts. This time, we do not expect to be able to complete all of these procedures before our regular opening tomorrow. The Henry will be closed until we can go through our protocols, all of which mirror the San Diego Health Department's and CDC guidance.These are challenging times. A spokesperson for the County wrote, "We leave it to the business, ANY business, to notify their customers. If we believe there is a risk to the public beyond that which would require further notification, we would notify the public."The County reports that medical providers are required to notify County health officials about employees who’ve tested positive. When ABC10News asked about whether restaurant employers are required to do the same, the County referred us to the state’s website which reports in part that employers should prepare to notify their local health department if there’s an outbreak or lab confirmed cases in the workplace.On Tuesday, ABC10 News asked The Henry for an interview. CLEVELAND — Two residents in Cleveland's West 58th Street neighborhood suffered significant injuries while protecting neighborhood children from an Oct. 7 pit bull attack.Becky Barker and Jay Anderson responded after hearing the screams of children who were being chased by three pit bulls they said were part of a one-hour rampage in their neighborhood.Barker told WEWS the pit bulls had children trapped on top of a car that was parked in front of her home, and when she stepped out to help, the pit bulls bit her multiple times in three areas of her body."They could have killed me, they really could have, if they would kept ripping me open like they did," Barker said."The children were screaming, and the dogs are just like clawing up this ladies car to get at these kids," she said.Jay Anderson also suffered several dog bites on the backs of his legs and back.Anderson said he tried to use a screwdriver to fend-off the attacking dogs, but one of the dogs was able to disarm him."Just terrible, it was a horrible thing, kind of scary," Anderson said."So I turned around and looked at the dog that took my screwdriver, and a second one started attacking me" he said.Cleveland EMS, the fire department and the Cleveland dog warden responded to the scene.Residents told WEWS the owner of the dogs was cited and one of the pit bulls was confiscated.According to city law, the owner could be fined up to ,000, but Barker believes the irresponsible owner should face even tougher penalties."It isn't the breed of the animal, it's the owners of these animals that have them," Barker said."The owner of these dogs they should be held accountable, and really pay for what they did," she said.WEWS contacted the City of Cleveland about the case, but it said it couldn't comment on an ongoing investigation. 1854
COVID is wreaking havoc in the Southeastern Conference.On Wednesday, the conference announced that they postponed the No. 12 Georgia Bulldogs vs. Missouri Tigers football game due to a COVID outbreak within the Tigers football program.With Missouri already playing Dec. 12, the conference pushed back the Georgia and Missouri's game to Dec. 19, the conference said in a press release.This is the fourth game the conference has had to postpone this week."While it is unfortunate to have multiple postponements in the same week, we began the season with the understanding interruptions to the schedule were possible and we have remained focused throughout the season on the health of everyone around our programs," said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in the news release. County employees in southern California have been arrested for allegedly damaging a Black Lives Matter sign that was displayed on private property in the city of Thousand Oaks.The homeowner installed a surveillance camera and captured several instances of people damaging and trying to remove the sign, which is a tarp along a fence with the letters "BLM" on it. Authorities said they recognized one of the vandals after the homeowner posted surveillance video on social media, according to the LA Times. Three people so far have been arrested, including Darin Stone, a sheriff's office employee in a non-sworn-in position. He was allegedly seen slashing the sign in two separate incidents while off-duty.Stone received a misdemeanor citation and was placed on administrative leave.Craig Anderson, an investigative assistant in the Ventura County DA's office was cited for vandalism.
