SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new program at three San Diego-area community colleges is hoping to bridge the gap between minority students and their teachers.The Deber Program at Mesa, Southwestern, and City colleges hopes to encourage more bilingual people to become teachers."We don't have enough people of color in the classrooms," said Laurie Lorence, Teacher Education Director at Mesa College.The program will help recruit bilingual college students who want to become teachers. It will assist them throughout their college careers with applications, transfers, testing, and mentoring."We're hoping a lot of students want to give back to their community and reach down to give them a hand up," said Lorence.Right now, there's a wide disparity between the number of minority teachers and students of color in San Diego.According to the San Diego County Office of Education, 69% of students in local schools are students of color. But only 26.3% of teachers identify themselves as teachers of color. Bridging that gap can help minority students succeed."A student can look up at the teacher and say, 'Wow, if that person's done it, maybe I can too,'" said Lorence.For Karina Vidro, one of the students already in the Deber Program, the help it provides is vital."I know where I want to be, but I don't know all the details in between," she said. "So knowing that someone is going to be there to support me in that direction is fantastic."The Deber Program is funded through a five-year grant from San Diego State University. Lorence says the first few years will focus on Hispanic and LatinX students. They plan to expand to other minority groups after that. 1662

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was shot and killed in the Midway District Sunday morning, leading to a standoff in North Park, and a suspect is still on the loose, according to police.San Diego Police responded after receiving reports of a shooting behind a 24 Hour Fitness near Kemper Street and Midway Drive around 11 a.m.After arriving, police found a 27-year-old white man dead at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A neighbor says San Diego Police were called to the home of YouTube personality McSkillet, whose real name was Trevor Heitmann, the morning of the deadly freeway crash.According to the CHP, the 18-year-old was in his McLaren sports car when he drove south in the northbound lanes of the 805 freeway near Sorrento Valley Thursday just before 5 p.m. He collided head on with an SUV. Both cars burst into flames.Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter Aryana were killed instantly. Heitmann also died following the crash.A neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, says she's known the family roughly 15 years,"He was a normal kid, we went to elementary school with him and everything was totally normal," the neighbor said. "He went off to La Jolla Country Day from then on I mainly saw him playing basketball with a couple of guys in the street, " she said.She said once Heitmann started getting into online video games, he stopped playing basketball outside.The neighbor said she saw police at the family's Carmel Valley home Thursday morning just hours before the fatal crash."There were probably three police cars, I would guess five officers and they were talking to his mother out in the driveway," she said.She also noticed an SUV blocking the family's driveway. Heitmann's McLaren sportscar was in the garage and the door was open."Now it makes sense. It was actually blocking the McLaren that was sitting inside the garage," she said.Later that afternoon, she said her husband heard a crash."He saw the McLaren zoom away and then it was a little while later that we had the news on and saw that there was a horrific accident," she said.Shortly after, she said she saw a CHP officer talking to Heitmann's dad.She says that's when she learned from the boy's father that the family had been worried about the 18-year-old's behavior."He told me five days earlier, that Trevor had just snapped, that was the word he used. He started making threats, or started saying he was driving at high speed, down the wrong side of the street and through red lights and he said that's what prompted him to come to San Diego," said the neighbor, who added that the boy's parents were divorced and his dad lived in Colorado.She said the teenager's dad also shared with her that his son hit the SUV that was blocking the driveway and nearly hit him."He said he almost hit me. This was him going back to the context of saying he had just snapped. And I said, 'you mean hit you as a person,' and he said, 'yeah I was standing out here because we were supposed to go to a psychiatrist,'" she said.San Diego Police have not confirmed that officers were called to the family's home that morning. These people were obviously very concerned to the degree that they called the police, especially in the face, they are very private people," she said.Clinical Psychologist Michelle Marie Carcel said forcing a kid who is over 18 to get psychiatric help can be complicated. She said parents need to be clear when calling 911 that they think their child is a danger to themselves or others."The most important thing is to really stress that in the call. I am concerned that my child is going to hurt themselves or hurt someone else, that kind of urgency really triggers that response from the officers," said Carcel.We don't know the circumstances of the call that day or if officers had contact with the 18-year-old. 3930

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Marine Corps. family won a -million lawsuit against Lincoln Military Housing after they say mold sickened their children.The Charvat family moved to San Diego's military housing near the Marine Corps. Father and husband Matthew worked at MCRD.The lawsuit lists disturbing symptoms the family dealt with, including "diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, irritated eyes, watery eyes, fatigue, stuffy nose, sinus congestion, itchy skin, sneezing, sore and dry throat, chest tightness, runny nose, lethargy."Anna, 9, was brought to tears when she described what she and her family endured, "my breathing was bad, I got sick a lot and my brother," she said choking up.Her mother, Leigh, said she had to take Anna to the emergency room after Anna woke up in the middle of the night gasping for air.When it came to her 6-year-old son Johnathan, "you could hear him breathing downstairs, it was very loud we used to say he sounded like Darth Vader."She said she tried everything from a different diet to going to doctors to try and figure out why her family was sick."I felt everyone thought I was crazy. Doctors, family thought I was crazy," she said in anguish. Then, the family found vents covered in black mold."It was shocking, I was disgusted," Leigh said, but she was also relieved to find an answer."Okay this is it, let’s get rid of it and let’s get on with our lives so we can get back to the way things were," she said.The lawsuit stated the defendant, Lincoln Military Housing, "negligently, improperly, recklessly and in a non-controlled manner, exposing Plaintiffs to excessive moisture, dampness, and humidity, as well as microbial contamination."Leigh said the company tried to "put a band-aide" on the situation and didn't try to find the source of the mold, "we were still sick after all their attempts to clean."The family moved out and had to throw away toys and furniture to keep from contaminating their new home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Carlos couple says they were amazed after reaching out to neighbors about gifting some holiday cheer to those in need.Twas the time before Christmas, and the Kvendru home in San Carlos bears similarities to Santa’s workshop."Not a lot of space on the counters. It's like a hoarder home," laughed Renae Kvendru.For Renae Kvendru and her husband David, the journey to this moment began eight holidays ago, when they handed out some 12 Ziploc bags filled with supplies to the homeless. Since then, their efforts have grown slowly every year.This year, they decided to appeal to their neighbors on the Nextdoor app for supplies."The response was overwhelming and extremely heartwarming. I was expecting 20 jackets, and I got hundreds," said Kvendru.Their converted garage is filled with boxes of donations, including other clothing items, gloves, shoes and umbrellas. The couple also plans to hand out COVID-prevention kits."We made COVID bags ... a couple of masks, hand sanitizer, and wipes," said Kvendru.In all, the couple has put together some 300 gift bags and stockings filled with snacks and toiletries, including some special bags for kids that come with a stuffed animal.Renae gets emotional when talking about a gift she received as a child."I grew up poor, though I was never on the streets and always had food. One year, I think it was Toys for Tots ... some big truck came by our house and gave me a big teddy bear. There are pictures of me hugging that teddy bear. Just remembered how happy that teddy bear used to make me as a kid. If you can give someone that moment, that’s pretty awesome," said Kvendru.Starting this weekend, the couple will drive through areas with homeless populations and start passing out their holiday gifts."If you can help make one person’s day a little brighter, you’ve done good ...
